Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty

Crossing the Edge

Rosewood felt smaller that night, as if the shadows themselves had thickened. Audrey didn't know it yet, but the world she had begun to rebuild was teetering on the edge.

She was in her room, staring at the ceiling, heart still thundering from the scare earlier. The police had left hours ago, and Mrs. Edith had tucked herself into bed, murmuring prayers that Audrey didn't fully hear. Silence had returned—but it wasn't comforting. It was waiting.

A soft knock startled her.

Alex stepped inside, face tense, eyes scanning the room as if he expected danger to crawl in behind him.

"You're still awake," Audrey said, her voice small.

"I couldn't sleep," he admitted, closing the door quietly behind him. "And neither could I let you be alone."

She swallowed, a mixture of gratitude and unease knotting in her stomach. "You… saved me. Twice tonight."

He shook his head. "I didn't save you. You handled yourself. I just… guided the pieces before they could break."

Audrey frowned. "Guided the pieces?"

He hesitated, looking away for a moment, jaw tight. "There are things about the world… and me… that you don't know. Things I don't want to bring into your life unless it becomes necessary."

Her stomach twisted. "Necessary?"

He met her eyes, steady, unwavering. "Tonight it is."

Outside, Brian was already moving. He hadn't intended to risk anyone else—he thought he had been careful—but Alison had slipped a fragment of information to Audrey earlier, and now he had no choice. He needed to escalate.

Alone in his car, he tapped the steering wheel, calculating.

"She's too close to him," he muttered. "I can't get her if he's always there. He's… stronger than I expected."

Brian's obsession had evolved from love to control. From control to destruction. Every plan, every move, had one goal: remind Audrey that no one could escape him.

He smiled as he dialed a number. "It's time to shake the tree," he said softly.

Back at Mrs. Edith's, Audrey and Alex walked side by side down the quiet street. Even the night seemed to hold its breath.

"You're quieter than usual," Audrey noted, glancing up at him.

"I'm thinking," he admitted. "Planning. Making sure tonight doesn't spiral."

Audrey nodded slowly. "I feel like… whatever's coming, I'm going to be in the middle of it whether I want to or not."

Alex's gaze softened briefly. "You're stronger than you think. And I'll be with you—every step."

She looked at him, really looked. Something about the way he carried himself, the way his posture seemed to prepare for danger without a word, made her heart both ache and flutter. She had always trusted him, but now the trust felt like a lifeline.

And still, there was mystery.

Brian's first move was subtle but chilling. A series of minor accidents, small threats, messages that whispered closer and closer to home. One night, a window was left unlocked. Another, the hum of a car engine idling nearby long past midnight.

Audrey began noticing the patterns. She mentioned it to Alex.

He didn't panic. Not yet. But his eyes darkened. Something that had been hidden in the depths of his expression flickered—a warning.

"This isn't just about you," he said quietly, voice low. "He wants leverage. Control. And I won't let him have it."

Audrey's heart raced. "You… Can you stop him?"

He shook his head. "I can make sure nothing happens to you. But there are things about me… skills, resources… that I've kept hidden. For situations exactly like this."

Her stomach dropped. She realized, in that moment, that Alex had been holding back far more than she'd known. Far more than anyone could imagine.

Later, in the small hours, Brian made his first direct attempt. He followed Alison, hoping to trap her alone and cut off Audrey's warnings. But Alex was already shadowing their movements.

By the time Audrey received the frantic message from Alison, she knew immediately something was wrong. Her pulse spiked. Alex didn't hesitate.

Together, they moved swiftly, a tense rhythm of coordinated action, hearts pounding, breaths sharp. They intercepted Brian just before he could corner Alison.

It wasn't violent. Not yet. But the message was clear: Brian had crossed a line.

Alex stood between them, eyes dark, hands clenched. Audrey felt a pulse of awe and fear. She knew he was capable of more than protection. She didn't need to see it fully—but she understood enough.

Brian looked at him—and for the first time, something like respect flickered through the madness in his eyes.

"You think this ends here?" he hissed.

"It ends when you stop," Alex said evenly. "And you're running out of options."

Audrey's chest swelled with a new kind of power. She wasn't just surviving. She wasn't just being protected. She was part of this fight. And for the first time, she felt the full weight of her own courage.

Brian disappeared into the night, but the danger now felt permanent. Nothing would ever be simple again.

And Rosewood, that quiet, gentle town, was becoming a battlefield in ways

Audrey had only just begun to understand.
