"Finding true love again"
''Hurry up man!" Shouted George to Andy as they hurried to spy on Mavis. Andy was so nervous. He was hoping for the best after meeting the girl he loved so much. That evening campus as usual was a hive of activity. It was bustling with people; with others going out for the weekend, while others were going out to have a good time in the evening. The night was so cool. Girls could be seen giggling to themselves as they walked along the campus hallways. George and Andy made their way to the October hostel, Andy was putting on a cape. He did not want to be seen by those he knew. They positioned themselves at a strategic point which would give them an advantage while spying on Mavis. That night would be their lucky day. Mavis and her lover had an appointment that evening. They were going for a movie and later a sex romp at a named lodge. She wore leggings with a large t-shirt on top. She really looked sexy and hot. As they strolled towards Mr. Mbewe's posh car, the two love birds could not let go off each other. He kept smooching her and squeezing her bums. She loved it. When they emerged from the hostel wall fence, Andy recognized his girl. His heart sank within himself. He was beyond shocked! He could not control himself. He decided to confront the two love birds. He never cared if he would cause a scene. ''Is this what you have been doing huh?! Oh, so you have been ignoring my calls because of this old man? Who can be as old as your father?!'' yelled Andy. ''Hey, get your hands off her boy! And who are you calling old here? Hey Mavis who is this stupid boy anyway!?'' retorted the pot- bellied Mr. Mbewe. ''He was my boyfriend but we broke up, I dumped him!'' sarcastically yelled Mavis. Her response started to attract a crowed. "Oh, so you know that's the reason I was not even bothering to reply to your stupid messages. Now get a life and move on. You leave me alone!'' yelled Mavis. Andy had never been embarrassed and humiliated in his life. The crowd booed him as he left the scene; with tears in his eyes, he walked off accompanied by George. That moment was one of the most painful moments in Andy's life. He almost fainted. The pain was just so unbearable. He could not believe it that the girl he had known way back in Katete could do such a thing to him in front of so many people. ''It happens bro, just let go of her; better a break up than a divorce'' comforted George as he held his friend. It was such a sorry sight as they headed to their room. Andy cried so bitterly. He could not believe it that his girl was gone. He felt like such a loser.
Andy stayed for a day without eating. He was depressed now. ''Bro, you better forget about her and eat. She is gone! She isn't coming back for you, please eat! Said George as he comforted his friend. Andy stopped going for classes for four days. He got permission from work after getting a sick note from UNZA Clinic. He just wanted to sleep and do nothing. Depression was setting in. he started to lose weight. Andy also had insomnia and yet he needed to work on his research project. He was such a wreck as he attended church the following Sunday. Nothing was making sense at this point. Andy was failing to concentrate on the preaching that Sunday. His mind was wondering what Mavis was doing with her new lover. Life could be so cruel he had learnt. Andy had treasured this girl ever since he met her back in Katete. Andy prayed for strength during this period. He just wanted to be closer to God in that trying moment. How he hated Mavis! He never wanted to have anything to do with her. He had invested so much in her on the emotional level. He never imagined ever falling in love again with any girl. After a week he cleared his mind. All he wanted to do was finish his Economics degree and leave campus. Andy was much better now. ''You seem happy today; what's going on bro?'' excitedly asked George as they had lunch at the cafeteria. '' why should I be sad because of an idiot? What will I gain by being sad bro? I will utilize what am feeling as positive energy to pen the most inspiring songs ever; look man am just trying to get by. Are you able to see what am seeing?'' said Andy. ''Hmmm. I love that; I can see some creativity there, sometimes or should I say that pain makes us more creative bro'' continued George. ''Exactly my man. Such experiences should be exploited to enhance creativity. I have just finished penning a song about loss'' said Andy. ''Don't tell me! Let me have a look at the lyrics'' said George as he drew closer to look at the paper that Andy was holding in his hands. ''You are such a genius my man!'' screamed George with excitement.
Andy would graduate with that year. He had put the past behind him. Together with George who was in third year they had formed a four-piece band. Andy on keyboards, George on lead guitar, Darren on drums while Isaac played the bass guitar. Andy was the front man for the band; they would call themselves as 'Andy and the boys'. The band was named so due to Andy being the most visible member of the band. He was the chief composer and arranger of their songs. Being the multi- instrumentalist that he was, he could also play the accordion on many occasions and drums and of course the piano. He had excelled in his studies and everyone knew he would be top of his Economics class. Using his influence, he had booked the band to play at his graduation. Management was more than willing to see what Andy and his band were capable of doing. This put so much pressure on the band. It meant constant rehearsals on a daily basis for "Andy and the boys'' band. They could be heard rehearsing in the library basement after 9 pm. This proved problematic for the students who were studying in the library since it was examination time. The band opted to start jamming in the lecture theatre at the School of Veterinary. Andy had planned to sing the song he had penned some few weeks ago. He titled it "Take a look at me now''. The song was talking about losing something so special and finding purpose in God. It was such an emotional song. It was a song so close to Andy's heart. George now understood why tears could always swell in Andy's eyes each time they sang the song. This song was inspired by the events surrounding Andy losing Mavis. It now made perfect sense, George thought.
Andy had bought himself the gown for the graduation and a grey suit. He also bought some expensive shoes from one of the exclusive boutiques in town. Mavis was aware that Andy would be graduating. Despite their break up, she was nostalgic about her past with him. Not that she wished to have him back. She felt she was in a better place with her beau Mr. Mbewe who unlike Andy was able to take care of her financial needs despite being married. The graduation was held at the graduation square and it was a hive of activity. Andy's mum and dad were in attendance and his employers; they wanted to see their most prized possession graduate. He was such an asset to them. They all felt proud that he would finally be graduating from the University. This it was anticipated would bring immense joy to Andy's village back in Katete. The ceremony was graced by the minister of Higher Education honorable Silumesi. Andy was awarded as the best student overall from the School of Humanities. He had graduated with a distinction from his class. ''There is the fool! Just look at him, I knew that he would come out tops'' muttered Mavis as they sat in the gazebo. ''I wonder where that idiot got the money to buy that suit he is wearing'' said Nelly with a frown. ''I must say that despite being a poor loser, at least he knows how to dress, he looks so hot in that suit, just look at the muscles, his body is well chiseled; oh, he has a body to die for!'' said Jennifer with a lustful look in her eyes. All her friend's eyes were on her as they looked at her with frowns. ''What? Am just saying the truth!'' continued Jennifer. ''Well, if you want him go ahead and have him; will that nice body bring food on the table for you? What is the point of being good looking when you are so poor as a man?'' angrily said Mavis. ''Exactly my point!'' emphatically answered Nelly.
The school of Humanities would be the last to graduate for that day. It was time for Andy to shine again. He would make his parents, his employers and the whole crowed proud with the way he played the piano. The master of ceremony announced that a band would close the graduation ceremony. By this time Andy and his band members had changed their attire and put on something so stylish. As part of the choreography, Andy would be the last to be on the stage to join them in playing the piano. The drummer, the lead and bass guitarists would start the song then after about a minute Andy would emerge from the crowed barefooted as the rest of the band members. The crowed was shocked to see barefooted musicians playing their instruments so skillfully. It was so fascinating for the crowed. They all wore black denim jeans, waist coats and white shirts with a bow tie. They really looked so stylish. The song ''look me at me now'' had started playing much to the appreciation of the crowed which almost went berserk with excitement. They could not believe it. At a certain point in the song Andy walked slowly towards the front with a microphone in his right hand as he sung so beautifully with his falsetto voice. It was so amazing!
''The bird that you had caged has found its freedom/never to come back as I head to the south, never to be caged anymore/Look at what the grace of God has done for me/ just look at me now!'' beautifully
sung Andy the chorus as he sat on the piano stool to play so beautifully having fixed the microphone on the stand and pulled it closer to his mouth. He was playing the piano like it was his last day on earth. The crowed had never seen someone play the piano like Andy did that day. He was playing with so much emotion and passion at the same time. Mavis was moved to tears as she saw her former lover excite the crowed with melodic lyrics which were coming straight from his heart. The crowed begged for more but that was the end. Their performance that afternoon was so unforgettable. The band stood and bowed to the crowed as a sign of respect. The crowed clapped for them in admiration at such a splendid performance.
''Do you think Andy sung that song for you?'' asked Molly. ''I don't know, even though I care less whether he sung it for me or not; I must say he sung it so beautifully. It brings the memories you know'' said Mavis as she wiped her tears. ''Mavis, don't tell me this guy's song has wowed you to the extent that you wish you were back with him; by the way are you crying? Oh my gosh! Are you still in love with him?'' angrily muttered Nelly. ''No, am not! Have moved on. The song just made me cry, I just wished the guy had worked harder to keep me to himself; he is such a good guy, just look at all the love the whole campus is giving him'' said Mavis tearfully. ''It's okay, let him be, he is much better without you I guess, just look at him, so adorable and so fine looking'' said Jennifer. The girls dashed to their hostels. To them Andy was still the poor young man who had nothing. "Andy and the boys" had received a huge standing ovation for their performance. Everyone was praising them for their music. Andy just kept his cool as he stepped out of the stage with his band members. His time at varsity had ended. He now wanted to build a legacy for himself. He wanted to conquer the world. He was so full of bitterness against Mavis for dumping him. Andy was so angry with women in general. He never wanted anything to do with love and women. All he now wanted to do was work and make more music. He started renting a flat in Avondale. He bought the necessary stuff to make it a home. He bought a 55-inch Samsung TV, a fridge and a bed all from supreme furnishers. He was a busy man, if not at work, he would be found at church. He led such a misleading lifestyle. He did not want to attract so much attention especially from the opposite sex. Andy led such a frugal lifestyle to the outside world and yet his investments were bringing in thousands every three months. In order to diversify his investment portfolio, he bought a restaurant along Chachacha road. He wanted it to be the trendiest restaurant in town. Andy had invested about $90,000 for a start. He employed about 12 staff members. He did not want people to know he owned the place. Sometimes he could work there; putting on the uniform that the worker's wore just to blend in. he had strict rules on how the place should be run. Within a month of opening, the place had started to bring in the thousands per day. Andy was a happy man not because he was making so much money but because he had a generous heart to give to others and was content with little things. Andy had earlier realized how happiness in life does not depend on how fat someone's bank account is. For Andy happiness depended on his close relationship and standing with God which led him to help those less fortunate than him.
Two years after graduation on a weekend he was bored. They would not rehearse as a band that Saturday. He decided to drive to Arcades to have a relaxing afternoon. He was all by himself. Andy was casually dressed; blue denim jeans and a white t-shirt and some canvas. He looked a bit scruffy for a good reason. He just wanted to look as simple as possible. He went to hungry lion to order a drink and just let the time pass. It was so hot that morning. Andy just wanted to be by himself. He bought a newspaper to catch up on the local and international news. As usual he was so much interested in political and sports news. All of a sudden two cute and hot looking girls came up to buy food at hungry lion. He paid no attention to them. They giggled after they looked at him. He was so simple and yet so handsome. He was deeply immersed in his newspaper. It was Angela and her friend Judy. They were as free as the birds. Angela wore a crop top and black denim hipster while Judy wore a denim skirt, with a pink top and a leather coat on top. They looked dashing as they giggled to each other. They made their way straight to the counter. They realized Andy was all by himself. They really wanted to go and sit up with him. He looked humble. After ordering their food; they were coming from behind him. They argued as to whether they should say hi to him or not. Angela was not for the idea. She never wanted to sit with a man she did not know. As Angela was about to say hello; she accidentally spilled her ice cream on him. It was not intentional though; Andy wanted to turn to greet them back; he had thought they were a bit far and he ended up bumping into Angela who was made to almost fall thereby tossing her vanilla ice cream on Andy's t-shirt. ''Oh sorry, please forgive me, am so sorry; let me clean those stains'' said Angela. It was such an uncomfortable moment. Andy had never seen such a beauty in a long time. He wondered if at all she had a man. Of course, she had one; for how could such a rare gem be single? Andy thought to himself. ''So, what is your name? And what are you doing all by yourself?" politely asked Angela as she cleaned Andy. ''Hmm, don't you think you have asked so many questions? Well, am Andy, just a regular guy'' shyly answered Andy. Judy and Angela were looking at Andy deep into his eyes. They had never seen such a handsome guy in a long time. He had a body to die for. Both were smitten by his looks. ''So am Judy and my friend here is Angela, can we sit with you Andy?'' Judith asked as she sat down. Not wanting to feel left behind; Angela also quickly sat down on Andy's table. ''Can I order another ice cream for you considering the one you ordered has spoiled my shirt?'' politely asked Andy. ''No thanks, it's okay Andy. It's just so nice to meet you. So, you live around here?'' asked Angela. ''No, I don't live here, oh gosh I can't afford to live here'' said Andy with a nervous chuckle. ''Oh okay, that's interesting, you work around here I guess" continued Judy. They had such long conversations. Time moved so fast. It was as though they had known each other for a long time.
''So, what do you do for a living ladies? I guess it's my turn to ask questions'' said Andy with a smile. ''Well, I work for Zanaco Bank and my friend Judy is a student in the School of Natural Sciences; she intends to become a medical doctor" excitedly answered Angela. ''Wow! You guys are so brainy huh! Am so happy for you" said Andy with a smile. ''So, what do you do for a living; sorry to ask Andy" apologetically said Judy as she looked at Angela with a smile. ''I work at a restaurant in town'' quickly answered Andy while looking at the ladies as if wanting to check their reaction. ''Oh, as what to be precise?'' interjected Angela. ''As a waiter" shyly answered Andy. ''Happy for you, you must love your job huh?'' continued Judy. Angela was quiet for a few minutes. She must have been processing what Andy had just said about him being a waiter. ''Yeah, I love serving people, I just love serving people, it's my passion'' lied Andy. He had learnt his lessons in life. He had realized that when it comes to finding love, showing off possessions was a recipe for disaster as one would be loved merely for what they had and not for who they were. He had learnt the bitter truth that love was not easy to find in the big city of Lusaka. Andy had closed himself to love. He had never forgotten how Mavis had dumped him in such a shameful fashion. He had made up his mind to always hide his identity from people. He felt safe that way.
''It has been a pleasure knowing you Mr. Andy Banda '' said Angela as they left. She seemed smitten. She could not look straight into his eyes. Could it be love at first sight? Andy wondered. ''You have no idea what this meeting means to me guys; am so happy, you kept me company, can I get your numbers?'' requested Andy. ''Yeah, of course why not?'' said Judith as she wrote down hers and Angela's phone numbers. ''So, when can we see each other again ladies?'' asked Andy as he looked at the girls intently. They both felt shy. ''We don't know; you suggest, how about next weekend? Will you be busy? I will be free and Judith will visit me from campus'' said Angela. ''Okay, that's cool, here is my number, 0979725647'' said Andy as he handed the paper to Judith. ''Give it to me!'' whispered Angela as she grabbed the paper from her friend. They all laughed as the girls left Andy. They giggled to each other as they walked away. He was left wondering which of the girls had liked him. He had noticed some green lights. He knew he had to tread carefully. Andy was not in a rush after all. Andy wanted to take time to know the girls. That restaurant in town he owned; he would pretend to work as a waiter there. He did not want the girls to know he owned the place. He did not want to let the girls know he stayed in Avondale. Andy planned to tell them he lived in Mutendere-a lower middle income neighborhood east of Lusaka City. He knew he had a worker who stayed there in a one roomed house. He would take her there if she wanted to know where he stayed. Andy was a complicated fellow who was now good at pretending. Life experiences had taught him that way. By the way he had lied to the girls that he had come with public transport and yet his BMW X5 was packed just there at arcades shopping mall. No wonder he had to wait for the girls to drive away first.
Angela lived in Chilenje. She stayed all by herself. Life could be boring at times. She missed her best friend Judith and they made sure they met every weekend whenever Judith was free at school. Angela had liked Andy; Judith too. ''So, what do you think of this guy?'' asked Angela. ''Who? You mean Andy? Oh, I think I really like him'' excitedly said Judy. She too had been charmed by Andy's good looks. ''What!? Hands off! What do you mean you like him? I met him first! He is mine!" yelled Angela as they drove passed Lusaka High Court. ''Hmmm, girlfriend, relax, we both met him at the same time; mind you, it's you who poured ice cream on him'' retorted Judy. ''And I cleaned him, have you forgotten? I deserve him!'' emphatically said Angela. ''Okay, you can have him; I think you like him more than me anyway. How about you hand over your brother to me'' asked Judith. ''Which one? I have two brothers you know'' answered Angela as they cruised past Ministry of Finance offices. ''Come on don't be funny, you know the one am talking about'' said Judy with a serious look. ''Okay deal, you have my permission'' said Angela. ''Yeah!'' shouted Judy. She had been eyeing her best friend's brother for some time now. He was at Ridge-way in his sixth-year pursuing Medicine. Judith would spend her weekend at Angela's place in Chilenje. The girls loved shopping and they had to pass through Chilenje Shoprite for some shopping.
Mavis' life was getting out of control. Her sugar daddy was very domineering and abusive. One day he beat her up so badly after she refused him sex. She had regretted ever dating a married man. As she came to her room, she had bruises and a broken arm. Her roommates could not believe that Mr. Mbewe could do such a thing. They consoled her. Mavis now started regretting leaving Andy. He seemed to be doing fine now. He had moved on she perceived. She should have been more understanding and patient with him. Mavis had put so much pressure on him to be someone he was not. She now envied and feared him at the same time. Mavis had not forgotten how smart Andy was. He was determined to get anything at all costs. This period was one of the most painful ones in Mavis' life. She felt so alone. Her friends Nelly, Jennifer and Molly flanked in second year and had to repeat the year. She proceeded to third year. Despite feeling like she had lost everything; at least she had school ahead of her and she was determined to put some effort and graduate at least. Her life had no direction and she hated it. Despite struggling financially with Andy; at least her life was on the straight and narrow. It had purpose.
Andy was excited that he would visit Angela and Judith at their place. He had a master plan. He would drive his BMW X5 to Chilenje market, change his clothes in the car and hire out a finished bike to ride to Angela's house. He wanted to keep his status hidden to everyone. He did not want Angela to know who he really was. He had passed through Mutendere and chatted with his worker Delson. He was one of the waiters at his restaurant. Delson thought it was a joke when Andy told him about his plans. ''You are joking boss, right? Curiously asked Delson. ''Do I joke like this? Just tell me if you will help me achieve my plans or not'' said Anderson. ''Since it's you, no problem boss; but am wondering, why do that in the first place?'' asked Delson. ''Stop asking many questions and do as I tell you. Your job is to hide my true identity, I don't want people to know that am rich okay, the girl am interested in I have told her that am a waiter and I have also told her that I stay in Mutendere at your place to be specific so when the right time comes; I will bring her here; is that clear?'' asked Andy with his eyes fixed on his worker. Delson was still shocked. He could not understand why his boss wanted to embark on such a mission. Since he was assured that he would be handsomely paid for the side job, he was more than willing to aide his boss Mr. Banda accomplish his plans. After half an hour of planning with Delson, Andy left for Chilenje. He passed through state house and went straight to Chilenje Market and packed his SUV. Before alighting from the car, he changed his clothes and wore simple clothes. A finished denim jeans and a golf shirt. He looked too casual. He really looked like a waiter who is off duty. Onlookers were so shocked to see a poorly clad guy coming out of such an expensive ride at Chilenje Market. Andy cared less. He was on a mission to woo a lady he had started to like. He had just met her a week ago-how funny. He quickly rushed to one of the guys who repaired bicycles. He wanted to rent his bike. ''Hey how much can you lend me this bike? Will pay you well bro" said Andy with a smile. ''Are you kidding me? Everyone here is admiring you for the ride you have packed there and you are here talking nonsense about borrowing my bike? Bro you better buzz off!'' yelled the infuriated man. ''Just trust me, will pay you well for it'' assured Andy. ''How much will you pay me?'' inquired the man with a curious look. ''How about $20? Will just use it for about two hours that's all'' said Andy. ''Okay deal but if you ever run away with my bike; I will kill you and grab that expensive ride you have borrowed!'' threatened the middle-aged man. ''If I ever steal your bike; just get my ride over there okay'' joked Andy as he sped off. Angela was so anxious to see her new friend. Judy too. They had prepared the most sumptuous meal for their guest. Angela was so nervous that Andy would be visiting her. She could not believe it that they had just met a few days ago at arcades shopping mall. She was feeling as if she had known him for a long time. The connection was so real. Angela never cared about his social or economic status. She wanted to know him better. Perhaps things might work out between them. She could not wait to see his handsome face. From the first meeting she had concluded that he would make a good man for her and she wanted to see him the second time. Angela called him. ''How far?'' anxiously asked Angela. ''Am at Shoprite, where are you?'' asked Andy after alighting from the bike. He had sweated a bit. ''Okay just stay where you are; am coming to pick you up'' said Angela. Andy was also nervous. He did not believe what was happening to him. Angela was such a beauty to behold. Andy wondered if she would ever fall for him. He had told himself not to rush with her. He wanted to take things slowly.
"Keeping things under wraps"
There he was. He was all sweaty and pushing his bike. The girls beheld him and were shocked! ''You mean you cycled all the way from Mutendere on a bike? Hmmmmm. Anyway, am happy to see you Andy'' said Angela with a smile. ''Yeah, am so tired'' said Andy with a sigh. She hugged him despite being all sweaty. Judy greeted him and smiled at him as they headed to her place. Andy pretended to be too tired when they reached home. ''You have a cozy place here; it must cost a fortune'' said Andy after being ushered inside. He wanted to appear as plain as possible so as not to blow his cover. ''Will you take a bath first or eat?'' asked Judith. ''would rather bath first please, then eat'' he answered. Angela was all smiles. She knew just how well-built Andy was. Of course, she could not dare look at his naked body. After she handed him the lotion and soap she escorted him to the bathroom. Angela started giggling after she came back. ''I know you are head over heels with this guy, please find him something to do as soon as possible; you won't tell me that you are happy that you will start dating a waiter at a damn restaurant'' said Judith. ''Yeah, will ask him for his papers to see how I can push for him at our bank, at least if he can be employed as a bank teller, am sure he has good grades at grade twelve'' said Angela with a worried look. ''Don't worry my dear, he is a good man, just by looking at him; am convinced you will make a good couple in future'' assured Judy. ''Hope so, Eish; my parents have been putting pressure on me; my mum especially, she wants me to introduce to them a would-be husband'' said Angela. ''I know dear, you have some work to do, me too; we aren't getting younger you know. We need to settle down soon'' said her best friend with an assuring look. The girls had kept their virginity up to now. They were the envy of everyone in the neighborhood. Having finished bathing, Andy became fascinated with Angela's bathroom. She had hanged her underwear on a plastic hanger in there. They were such sexy lingerie and Andy could not hold himself from touching them. He thought to himself if what he was doing to Angela was fair at all. He convinced himself that it was a necessary step for him to find the woman who would truly love him for who he was.
''Eish, the shower was so amazing; am much better now I think'' said Andy after emerging from the bathroom. ''You better eat my dear'' said Angela as she dashed to the kitchen to get some food. ''So, Andy what are your plans after your waitress job?'' asked Judy. Andy smiled a bit and cleared his throat. ''You mean what I want to do after I quit my job? Well, am planning to go to college and pursue my Diploma in Business'' lied Andy. Angela was eavesdropping to their conversation. She felt good that her romantic interest had such amazing future plans. All she needed was a guy who was ambitious and hardworking.'' I just love the job that I do '' continued Andy. ''that's impressive; so how many are you in your family?'' asked Angela. ''Am the only child for mum and dad who are farmers in Katete. ''That's amazing!'' said Angela. Judy was less enthused. She just looked down. How she wished Andy had a good job; not that she was materialistic. She was just afraid for her friend. Her parents might not accept Andy if they decided to marry. She cared for both of them. Judith had seen it in Angela's eyes how much she loved Andy and was considering marrying him in the near future. ''Would you mind marrying a lady who would get paid more than you if you loved her?'' asked Angela. Sensing what she implied; Andy hesitated to answer. ''Hmmm, why not; but I will work so hard to take good care of that woman; would not want to make my woman to suffer after marrying me'' assured Andy. The ladies clapped for him. ''Now you are talking Andy'' all said in unison. There was a pause of silence. They all just looked at his each other. Andy decided to break the silence. ''So, what are your future plans Angela? What are your dreams?'' asked Andy. ''No, you tell us Andy, you be the first to tell us'' requested Angela. ''Yes, you tell us Andy; we want to hear more about you'' emphasized Judith. By this time the girls were laughing loudly. ''Hmmm, I thought I just laid out my life before you guys; I just told you that I plan to go to college and pursue my Diploma in Business when the money am saving is enough'' confidently said Andy. ''Hmmmmm, so you are saving huh? That's smart!'' said Judith with her eyes open wide. ''In addition to that am planning to release an album someday'' said Andy proudly. ''Oh, so you can sing? Why did you not tell us? Excitedly asked Angela. ''You never asked me, did you? Of course'' shyly replied Andy. All the girls were shocked beyond belief. Angela rushed to her bedroom to go and get her old keyboard which her dad had bought a year ago on her birthday.
''Here, can you play this keyboard? Am sure you can, please play a song for us'' demanded Angela. ''Yes, please don't let us down. We are so eager to hear you sing at least. Andy pretended not to be good with the keyboard; he deliberately hesitated to start playing the keyboard. After much persuasion he reluctantly got it and started playing it much to the admiration of the girls. He started playing the song ''Look at me now''. Angela and her best friend were awestruck. They could not believe it that a mere waiter could be so skilled in playing the keyboard. ''Enough of keyboard playing for today; let me eat more food please'' said Andy as he munched his food. The girls were all smiles. ''Who sung that song you just sung Andy? I have never heard of it" asked Judith. ''Oh, you mean that one I just sung? Well…. I just wrote it a few years ago'' humbly said Andy without any trace of pride. ''What? You mean you penned down all those emotional lyrics by yourself?'' asked Angela in admiration. ''Yes, I penned it during one of the darkest moments in my life'' said Andy after a sigh. ''You must be a very skilled songwriter then huh?'' continued Judith who now drew much closer to Andy. Angela gave her a sharp look to signal that she did not approve her friends act. They spent the rest of that day chatting and laughing. The girls now did not care if Andy was a waiter or a garbage collector. Both were smitten by his charm and yet the real love of Anderson was Angela and this Judy knew and respected at all times. The girls escorted him around 4 pm to Shoprite with his finished looking bike. ''Please be careful on the roads Andy, we will visit you this weekend; how about that?'' asked Angela after she hugged him. ''Let's be in touch, we will definitely see each other this coming weekend'' said Andy. ''Please write more songs for us so that you play for us this weekend'' said Judith as she hugged him to say goodbye.
Andy dashed as quickly as possible to the bicycle repair shop fearing that the guy might close his store. ''There you are mister; I was losing patience. Where is my money you promised?'' asked the man with a serious look on his face. ''Relax mister, you may develop blood pressure'' teased Andy. ''Here you are; get your money mister'' said Andy as he handed $20 to the man. ''I thought you were kidding, so you were serious huh? What a ride you have there! Why didn't you go with your expensive ride anyway? I don't understand you bro!'' asked the man with a surprised look. ''Don't ask me too many questions please, I have sorted you out, haven't I? Now will you stick to your lane now? You will be my client each time I visit this place. I will be needing your bike okay" said Andy as he got into his BMW and sped off. He did not even bother to change his clothes since his mission was accomplished. What a weekend he thought. He had completely kept his cover hidden from the girls. Another challenge lay ahead of him. The girls would be visiting him next weekend and he needed to think fast on how he would keep the cover hidden. He needed to make arrangements with Delson on the use of his two roomed house in Mutendere. He would of course pretend to live there. He wanted to see Angela's reaction. He loved surprising people a lot. Even to the point of almost losing those close to him. Andy just did not care anymore if he lost those he cared for the most in his life.
Grace was such a trouble maker. Mr. Musonda detested his daughter. She was now going out with a married man. Her father had lost patience with her. ''I can't stand your daughter, I suspect she is not mine; my daughter can't behave the way she does. Why can't she be like her young sister!?'' yelled Mr. Musonda. ''How can you be so mean? What are you implying by that? Are you saying that I cheated on you with another man to have Grace? Sometimes you annoy me! I don't want to get upset with you; I beg you!'' answered Mrs. Musonda. Grace was indeed the black sheep of the family. Always concocting mischief here and there. She had started work at the University Teaching Hospital as a nurse. She was a good nurse despite being a party animal and husband snatcher. She had always insisted on moving out but her parents always refused her to leave the house and stay alone. They just imagined what sort of trouble she would get herself into. She was morally bankrupt. Grace was so loose morally she could not hesitate to sleep with any man who had money. She was so lucky not to have contracted the HIV virus by now. Grace was always found in toxic relationships. This was a pattern she had grown up with. They were complete opposites with Angela who was the darling of her parents-always reserved and looking so organized with all that she did. Grace decided to request to start staying with her young sister. That request was welcomed by their parents. Angela knowing too well the kind of person her elder sister was felt less impressed. If Grace wanted to stay with her, she had better start behaving maturely. Grace teamed up with Angela's 9th grade friends Tabitha and Juliet; a whole bunch of up to no good girls. Angela had reconciled with them. They were childhood friends after all.
The girls settled well. The house was a three bedroomed one meaning that each one had her own bedroom. They agreed that Angela would be in charge of the rentals while Grace would handle food in the house. Despite her flaws, Angela loved her elder sister. At least ever since she shifted with her; she had started to value her body again. Thanks to Angela she had now reduced the days she could go partying at night. One evening she had borrowed Angela's car; a Toyota Allion and smashed it into the perimeter wall near their house. She was too drunk to negotiate a corner. Grace had damaged the corner lamp. ''Will pay for it my dear'' she insisted. ''Just forget it! Just don't borrow my car when you go on your drinking sprees again, use the bus!'' fumed Angela. There was tension in the house for the next three days. The girls could not speak to each other. Angela was so pissed with her elder sister. Being the Christian that she was, she reached out to her elder sister. ''Good morning, here is breakfast for you in bed'' softly said Angela after she entered her elder sister's bedroom. Grace could not believe the kindness that she was receiving from her young sister. She could not believe that her sister could ever be so kind after smashing her prized car. ''Oh, how sweet! Thanks a lot!'' answered Grace. ''Don't mention it dear, I care so much for you and would not want that material thing get in between us'' assured Angela. They hugged and started laughing again. Angela was rushing for work while Grace would go in the afternoon shift. The house would be a hive of activity each weekend. Grace's hooligan friends would come over to party and make all sorts of noise. Angela hated it so much. She would drive to see Judith her best friend. They would go to bible study at church at s.t Paul's United Church of Zambia along Chilimbulu Road.
That week would be a busy week for Anderson Banda. The department he worked in was such a busy one. He had even forgotten to get hold of Angela. She too was so swallowed up by her busy schedule at the credit department at the bank. Angela was concerned that Andy had not called her. She missed him so much and she wanted to hear his voice. Angela just imagined how busy he was preparing meals for clients; somehow, she understood why he had not called her for a day. How she longed to hear from him. Andy had made all the arrangements for Angela and Judith who will be visiting him over the weekend. He had agreed with Delson that he would host the ladies at his two roomed house in Mutendere. Of course, he would make them think that was where he stayed. He wanted to see how they would react. His office overlooked the Cairo Road with its beautiful scenery. He was wondering as to why he was doing such to these girls. Andy was lost in thoughts as he swung in his chair. He realized he was falling in love with Angela. He had a huge pile of files on companies both local and foreign who were willing to flout their shares on the stock market. His job after being promoted now involved him making an analysis of firms to be listed on both primary and secondary markets on the stock exchange. This was a hell of a job. The pay was so good but it was also a demanding job. Andy had now realized that a higher pay demanded more effort.
Weekend was fast approaching. Andy needed to think fast. Angela and Judith would visit him so he had to arrange everything well. He needed flowers, chocolates and some take away food. Andy wanted to make Angela feel special. It had been two months since they met. He was wondering if it would be too early to tell her how he felt. He had told Delson to go somewhere after arriving in Mutendere with his BMW X5. He packed it near Pick n Pay since Delson stayed in section C. Andy was casually dressed like a chef on off duty. He did not want to be flamboyantly dressed so as not to arouse suspicion from the lady he loved with his whole heart. Angela on the other hand had dressed to kill. She had put on her peddle pusher, blue in colour and a black trunk top. Her hair was styled in a ponytail. She looked so hot. She wanted Andy to fall in love with her beauty. She anticipated better things ahead of her. She put on her most prized fragrance which she felt Andy would love. She quickly jumped into her car and started off for Mutendere. She had mostly passed through the township when going to Charleston and Avondale. Angela had no idea that it was a place full of activity. She was so nervous as she reached the main market. She called Andy who directed her to come to the mall at Pick n Pay. That was where they would meet. Andy was waiting for her at the main car park. There she was all looking so fresh. He beckoned to her to pack; she was alone this time as she smiled after seeing him. He was looking so handsome; tall and well built. After hugging each other they chatted a bit while looking each other in the eyes. Angela was all smiles. She was with the love of her life and she could not believe how gracious God has been to her. They held hands as they walked towards Andy's ''place''. ''So, this is the famous Mutezma huh?'' she asked as she stroked his hand. ''Yes, it is, very interesting place, all you need is here my dear'' assured Andy. ''Really?'' she asked teasingly. ''Oh yeah, just look at the shops, am sure you saw how big the market is when you passed'' continued Andy as they strolled along the dusty road. Some people kept staring at them wondering what such a sweet and expensive looking couple was doing in Mutendere. Andy just looked an average guy from the compound but what puzzled them the most was the lady he was holding hands with. It was clear for all to see that she was not from Mutendere. They never minded the stares from onlookers. They were in their own world.
''Oh, so this is where you have been hiding huh? '' said Angela with a smile. ''Yeah, this is my hiding place, I just love it here, I keep it simple and real'' said Andy. Angela looked around the two roomed house for her man. It was simple but tidy and comfortable. The television was neatly placed on the stand, the sofas were so clean. She wondered if it was the same in the bedroom. She could not wait to go there and have a look. Andy excused himself and went outside to call a young boy from the landlord's house to send him to the shops to buy some food for them. This was Angela's chance. She sneaked into Andy's bedroom. She was so impressed with what she saw. ''Hope Andy does not bring other girls in here'' she thought to herself. The room was neat with the bed looking so inviting. The dressing mirror was so neatly placed close to the bed, the beddings were so lovely. She concluded that Andy had style indeed. He was organized and that made her fall in love with him more. She saw the perfume on the dressing mirror. She got a bottle and sprayed some on the back of her arm, it smelled so nice. It felt as if Andy was close to her. It was so tempting. Angela smelled his clothes in the wardrobe. She now longed for him as she decided to lie on the bed. She was losing all sense of decency. Angela was tempted to make love to him. ''that's gross and stupid!'' she thought as she seductively lay on the bed with her legs spread apart. She noticed a sound system and a flash disc. She quickly switched it on and started playing some songs. She loved it. It took her into Andy's world and she got lost in it. It was some soft rock, sung by Andy himself. She loved his voice. Angela realized there was more to her love interest than met the eye.
Andy came back. She did not find her on the living room. He just heard some songs he and the band had recorded being played on the stereo in the bedroom. ''Hmmmmm, so this girl has gone to my bedroom, she must be loving it here'' thought Andy. He quietly walked to the bedroom. He was impressed with what he saw. There she was. Lying peacefully on his bed with her eyes closed. She seemed to be singing along to his songs with her eyes closed. ''How romantic'' he thought. He tapped her toe; she suddenly opened her eyes wide. Her perspiration increased. ''Are you alright?'' asked Andy. ''Yeah, am okay, why do you ask? How about you?'' she asked. It felt awkward for both of them. She had never been in bed with a man, they looked into each other's eyes. He drew closer to her. She too drew closer. The chemistry was just too strong; it would culminate into passionate kisses as their lips locked each other. They kissed like their breath depended on it. They kissed passionately for almost four minutes. Angela was getting aroused. Her pants were so wet now. She wanted it, she was gagging for it. He was a gentleman. He did not want to rush things-they were Christians for crying out loud. The temptation for both was so real! She was pulling him closer to herself, almost undressing him. ''Hey, not now baby'' he resisted. ''Okay, when, if not today, Andy?'' she shyly protested. ''When I marry you my love, it's a sin you know'' he lovingly said as he held her. She seemed to understand. Angela had been taken. All she had desired was her joy stick inside her. She regained her composure as she sat up. She realized just how much Andy loved her. He had also indicated that he would marry her. Angela loved the thought of that. Andy was a gentleman indeed. She had realized that indeed good men really exist.
They now started to dance to the songs by Andy and his band. The held each other. She was leaning on his chest. Angela had found her prince charming. She could not wait to marry him. She wanted to be with him till death. Being a well cultured lady that she was; she dashed to the kitchen to get the foodstuffs the boy had bought. Angela wanted to prepare him a nice meal. She wanted him to taste her cooking again. ''What do you want to do?'' he inquired. ''Can't you see, I want to cook for you, is there a problem baby?'' Angela asked with a surprised look. ''No honey there is no problem, it's just that you are my guest and it's me who should cook for you'' assured Andy. ''hmmm, okay, if you insist love'' said Angela as she sat on the sofa. Angela wanted to prepare macaroni in chicken for the love of his life. He got busy on the stove. Andy wanted to cook macaroni with chicken and potato salads. Their eyes met as he cooked while dancing to the music. She was busy giggling as she intently looked at him. Angela was so in love with him. They could exchange occasional stares and smiled at each other. They were so happy with each other. She quietly walked up behind him and tightly held him. She started kissing him as he chopped the vegetables. ''hmmm…baby I will end up cutting my fingers, please wait…. baby…hmmm, your sweet lips are nice'' moaned Andy as he kissed his girl. ''Will you stop protesting my love, let's enjoy these moments, you know I fell for you the moment I set my eyes on you that day at arcades shopping mall'' said Angela as she held him. ''Oh really? Hmmmmm, let me see, when did I fall for you? Yeah, the same day I saw you at arcades; I said in my heart that I will make you my wife' 'said Andy. The lovebirds were enjoying each and every moment together. Angela wished the day could go on and on.
Angela's countenance brightened up when she reached home. She felt like she was on top of the world. Grace was surprised to see her sister so happy. ''What's the good news dear that is making you so happy? Can you share with me please?'' asked Grace. By the way she never had no stable man of her own. ''Hmmmmm...am just so happy these days'' said Angela as she danced around the house. ''Has it got to do with a man? Hey why can't you bring him over so that I see him as your elder sister?'' said Grace as she sipped juice while seated on the sofa. ''don't worry Grace, you will meet him soon; oh, he is such a hunk, very well built and decent at the same time'' continued Angela. Grace could not wait to see Angela's man. She imagined him to be an important man; a man of high social standing. She had known her kid sister to be a woman of good choice in everything. Grace could not get answers to the questions she was asking Angela. She was such a secretive kid sister. Grace had admired and almost wanted to seduce Angela's previous boyfriends. She had bad manners and Angela knew her sister too well. The week that followed was so busy for Anderson, he could even forget to call his love from work. He decided to order red roses and chocolates for Angela. He wanted them to be delivered to her office. Andy knew she would love them, after all she loved surprises. How excited she was when she received the flowers. She wondered who had sent her such expensive red roses. Upon receiving the flowers and the chocolates she checked the note. It showed the name of the sender. Angela was so excited that Andy had sent her those beautiful items. How she loved chocolate and roses! Andy had class she concluded. She realized how much Andy must have sacrificed for her in order to afford the roses and the chocolate. That made her day. She kept on thinking about him
