Chapter 52 - Chapter 52 — Friendly Fire (Very Friendly, Very Fire)

Chapter — Friendly Fire (Very Friendly, Very Fire)

The hidden floor smelled wrong.

Too clean. Too quiet. Like a room that had already decided how you were going to die.

Lucien took one step in—

WHOOOOSH

A massive hammer flew past his face.

Missed by exactly one regret.

It slammed into the wall behind him with a thunderous BOOM, cracking stone and shaking the entire chamber.

Lucien slowly turned.

Bron stood frozen, empty-handed.

"…It slipped."

Lucien stared.

"…You threw a weapon heavier than me."

Bron frowned. "Sweaty grip."

Seraphine covered her mouth, shoulders shaking. "He almost killed you."

Elarion gasped. "Bron!"

Lucien exhaled slowly. "It's fine. I'm alive. Mostly."

The hammer suddenly rebounded off the wall.

Lucien turned just in time to be hit square in the back.

THUD.

Lucien faceplanted.

Silence.

STATUS ALERT

Minor Injury Detected

Cause: Blunt trauma (Allied)

Lucien groaned into the floor.

"…I have been slain by friendship."

PANIC MODE

Elarion rushed over immediately. "Lucien! Don't move!"

Seraphine crouched beside him. "Is this fatal?"

Lucien lifted a thumb. "Ask me in ten seconds."

Bron scratched his beard. "Hammer good."

Kael crossed his arms. "You shouldn't stand behind dwarves."

Lucien turned his head just enough to glare.

"I was standing in front."

EMERGENCY HEALING (KIND OF)

Elarion pressed a glowing leaf to Lucien's back.

Warmth spread.

Lucien sighed in relief.

"…Okay. That's nice."

Seraphine leaned closer. "You smell like panic."

"I smell like betrayal."

Bron knelt. "Sorry."

Lucien waved weakly. "It's fine. Next time aim for the enemy."

Bron nodded seriously. "I will try."

That did not reassure anyone.

IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES

Kael pointed forward. "Monsters."

Lucien pushed himself up. "Of course. While I'm injured."

Stone constructs began moving.

Lucien raised a hand. "Formation—"

Bron immediately swung again.

The hammer slipped.

Again.

Lucien screamed, "BRON—"

Too late.

Lucien was hit sideways, skidding across the floor like a broken ragdoll.

Seraphine laughed openly. "He's being used as terrain."

Elarion shouted, "STOP SWINGING!"

Bron looked confused. "But enemy—"

Kael stepped in front of Lucien protectively.

"Stand behind me."

Lucien coughed. "I appreciate the sentiment."

LUCIEN SNAPS (A LITTLE)

Lucien stood up, dusting himself off.

His smile was terrifyingly calm.

"Okay. New rule."

A faint blue flame flickered around his boots.

"Bron does not swing unless I say so."

Bron blinked. "Understood."

Seraphine grinned. "Authoritative."

Elarion relaxed slightly. "Good leadership."

Kael smirked. "Finally."

THE FINAL INSULT

A monster lunged.

Lucien sidestepped.

Bron swung perfectly.

The hammer crushed the monster.

Everyone stared.

Bron nodded proudly. "See? Controlled."

The hammer bounced.

It flew back.

Lucien caught it inches from his face.

The blue flame flared briefly.

Dead silence.

Lucien slowly handed it back.

"…One more time and I'm bonding with your hammer instead of you."

Bron's eyes widened. "No."

ENDING NOTE

They continued deeper into the dungeon.

Lucien walked very carefully away from Bron.

Seraphine hummed happily.

Elarion stayed close.

Kael watched Lucien's back.

Lucien sighed.

I reincarnated for power, he thought.

Not to get murdered by my own party.
