Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The First Nights of Survival

Kalin stepped out into the dark streets, holding his little sister Kala's hand tightly. Their fingers were intertwined, the only anchor of safety in a world that suddenly felt strange and unfamiliar.

The city looked completely different at night—alleyways they had never seen before, streetlights flickering softly, and a quiet sense of mystery hanging in the air.

"Brother… where are we?" Kala whispered, her eyes glistening with tears.

Kalin tightened his grip on her hand, trying to hide the fear that fluttered in his chest.

"We'll find our way… don't worry," he replied, his voice calm even as his heart raced.

They walked through the alleys as if on an endless journey, searching for any sign of safety.

But with each step, Kalin noticed the strange beauty of the night—the subtle glow of lights, the quiet movements of people passing by, the life buzzing softly in the shadows.

"Look around," he told Kala. "Isn't it beautiful? Why don't we stay here a little? It's full of life."

Kala smiled faintly, her small hands still holding his.

"It looks nice… do you think people here are kind, like us?"

"I don't know," Kalin replied, trying to reassure her. "But I'm with you. Don't wander off alone—we won't get lost as long as we're together. I'll protect you."

They wandered past brightly lit shops, noticing small offerings laid out for free. Kalin didn't understand why—maybe it was a holiday or some special day—but the gesture warmed his heart. They took what they could, knowing tomorrow they might not see this place again.

Finally, they found a quiet corner that seemed slightly safe.

"Here we can sit for a while," Kalin said. "Rest a little… what do you think, Kala?"

She nodded, mouth full of food, and smiled faintly as she looked up at the stars above, feeling the cold night air.

The first night on the streets was harsh and bitterly cold, but for Kalin, it was also the first taste of real freedom—a glimpse of a world where he had to rely on his own strength.

As the night deepened, the streets grew darker and colder.

"Kala… what if we peek around for a moment?" he asked.

"It's scary… no one is here," she replied. "Will we see monsters?"

Kalin smiled faintly.

"We'll stay close to our corner, just a quick look, then back immediately."

They moved carefully, eyes scanning every shadow. Suddenly, a figure darted across an alley. A stray dog barked fiercely, showing its teeth.

Kalin stepped in front of Kala, shielding her.

"Stay behind me," he whispered.

The dog lunged, but Kalin quickly grabbed a stick from the ground and waved it.

"Go away!" he shouted, his voice stronger than he felt.

The dog hesitated, then ran off, leaving the siblings trembling but unharmed.

"See? It was scary… but it's gone. Let's head back quickly," said Kala, still clutching his hand.

"Alright," Kalin assured her. "I promise we won't do that again. I've got you."

They walked quickly, and when Kala looked back, she caught a glimpse of a shadow. Their eyes widened in fear, and they ran without glancing back. Returning to their corner, Kalin's breaths were ragged.

"Did you see anything?" asked Kala.

"Maybe… let's just hide here. No one knows we're here," he said, scanning the quiet streets.

They settled in their corner, hands still clasped.

"Good night, brother," whispered Kala.

"And you too," Kalin replied softly.

He lay there thinking about everything that had happened that day—the steps on the streets, the challenges, the small victories, the fears faced:

A man demanding money aggressively.

Street children attempting to steal their few belongings.

Sudden rain making the roads slippery and cold.

With every challenge, his courage grew. He learned to move quickly, think carefully, and not let fear take control. Even in the darkest moments, he found small sparks of happiness to cling to.

The night was long, but Kalin made sure his sister slept peacefully, clutching her small doll tightly. He looked up at the stars and let his imagination wander. Each star seemed to carry a wish he longed to come true.

He wished: to become a police officer, to have true friends, to reunite his family, to have someone who loves him unconditionally, to have a home, a life, and true happiness.

He closed his eyes and whispered to himself,

"I wish for all this…"

And in that quiet moment, he realized one thing:

No matter how harsh the world may become, he and his sister would face it together.
