Cherreads

Chapter 20 - Chapter 21- Under the Spotlight

Darkness settled over the arena.

For a brief moment, thousands of people sat in anticipation as the final seconds of the rookie stage VCR played across the giant LED screens.

Backstage, the stage crew moved with practiced precision.

A crew member adjusted the final mark on the floor.

Another checked the hydraulic lift one last time.

"Platform one ready."

"Platform two ready."

"Camera three standing by."

The stage director's voice echoed through every headset.

"Places."

Five figures quietly stepped into position beneath the stage.

No one spoke.

There was nothing left to say.

Every rehearsal.

Every late-night practice.

Every blister.

Every correction from their choreographers.

Every vocal lesson.

It had all led here.

The countdown began.

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

The arena fell completely silent.

Then—

The opening instrumental echoed through the venue.

A single white spotlight pierced the darkness.

The centre platform slowly rose.

Joanne appeared first.

Standing alone beneath the light, she looked across the sea of faces before delivering the opening line with calm confidence.

The cameras immediately found her.

As she moved into position, another platform rose behind her.

Susu.

Her first note floated effortlessly through the arena, rich and steady.

The audience responded with louder cheers.

Moments later—

Bella emerged.

Then Mili.

Finally...

Leah.

The stage was complete.

Five members.

One formation.

The music surged into the first chorus.

Their movements were sharp, perfectly timed, yet never mechanical.

Months of training had turned difficult choreography into instinct.

Every transition connected seamlessly to the next.

Not because they were trying to look identical...

But because they trusted one another completely.

Backstage, one of the camera operators quietly nodded as he followed the formation through his monitor.

"They're easy to shoot."

His colleague glanced over.

"They know exactly where every camera is."

The performance continued.

The members barely had time to think.

Everything became rhythm.

Movement.

Breath.

Music.

When Susu's high note rang across the arena, applause broke out even before the chorus had finished.

Bella's earlier nerves had disappeared somewhere between the opening verse and the first formation change.

She found Joanne's shoulder during one transition.

Joanne gave the slightest nod.

Barely noticeable.

Enough.

The second verse flowed into another intricate formation.

Above them, moving lights swept across the audience while crimson graphics bloomed across the LED screens behind the stage.

Then—

The music stopped.

For half a beat.

The arena held its breath.

A deep bass note echoed through the speakers.

The stage transformed.

Rows of backup dancers emerged from both sides as smoke rolled across the floor.

The audience erupted.

Leah stepped forward.

Not as a soloist.

As the centre of the new formation.

The dancers surrounded her as the special MAMA choreography began.

It was faster.

More demanding.

Nothing like the version audiences had seen in the music video.

Every movement required absolute precision.

Years of technical training met musical freedom as Leah led the opening sequence, her control allowing each transition to flow naturally while the choreography retained its explosive energy.

Behind her, the dancers shifted like waves.

On the next count—

Joanne stepped forward.

Then Bella.

Susu.

Mili.

The five reunited at the front of the stage as the choreography reached its most demanding section.

Lines crossed without collision.

Levels changed in perfect sequence.

The backup dancers expanded and collapsed around them, creating ever-changing formations that filled the massive stage.

Cheers rolled through the arena.

Louder.

Then louder still.

Several senior artists watching from the audience leaned forward almost instinctively.

One choreographer backstage folded his arms, watching the monitor without saying a word.

Another quietly remarked,

"That's not an easy arrangement."

His colleague nodded.

"They're keeping it clean."

The final beat of the dance break landed.

Without pause, the music launched into the last chorus.

The energy inside the arena rose with it.

The members smiled more freely now.

The pressure had disappeared.

All that remained was the stage.

The final lyrics echoed through the venue.

One last formation.

One last turn.

One last step.

Silence.

The ending pose held for a heartbeat.

The cameras moved quickly from member to member.

Joanne met the lens with quiet confidence.

Susu's smile was warm despite her steady breathing.

Bella's eyes shone with relief and excitement.

Mili smiled softly before giving the smallest tilt of her head.

The final camera found Leah.

Instead of forcing an expression, she simply smiled.

A genuine smile.

Small.

Bright.

The lights slowly faded.

The platforms beneath the members began their gradual descent.

As the stage lowered from view, the applause only grew louder.

Cheers echoed through the arena.

Some fans stood.

Others continued clapping long after the music had ended.

Only when the stage disappeared beneath the floor did the five members finally breathe.

For a second...

No one moved.

Then Bella let out a quiet laugh of disbelief.

"...We actually did it."

No one answered immediately.

They didn't need to.

The smiles on their faces said enough.

Before they could step away from the platform, hurried footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Their manager led them through the narrow backstage corridor.

Crew members hurried past in every direction, some preparing the next stage while others dismantled the set ROSIES had just performed on.

"Great job."

One lighting technician gave them a thumbs-up as he passed.

A camera operator smiled.

"You looked great on the monitors."

The members bowed politely.

"Thank you."

As they reached their waiting room, one of the coordinators opened the door for them.

The moment it closed behind them...

The silence broke.

Bella leaned back against the wall and slowly slid down until she was sitting on the floor.

"...My legs feel like jelly."

Mili sat beside her, carefully removing one of her in-ear monitors.

"I don't think I took a proper breath during the first verse."

Joanne laughed softly as she loosened the microphone pack clipped behind her outfit.

"I finally remembered to breathe during the second chorus."

"You too?" Bella looked up.

"I thought I was the only one."

Susu carefully placed her microphone on the table before taking a sip of water.

"My heart is still racing."

"It probably will for a while," Joanne replied.

Across the room, Leah quietly stood in front of the mirror.

She wasn't fixing her makeup.

She simply stared at her reflection for a moment before letting out a long breath.

One of the makeup artists noticed.

"You've been holding that in since before the stage, haven't you?"

Leah smiled sheepishly.

"...Maybe."

"You did wonderfully."

"Thank you."

The makeup artist gently dabbed away a little perspiration near Leah's temple.

"I don't think your smile disappeared once during that last chorus."

Leah looked surprised.

"It didn't?"

"No."

"It suited you."

Before Leah could answer, Bella's voice echoed from across the room.

"Can someone untie this ribbon before I accidentally strangle myself?"

"I'm serious."

The stylist walked over, smiling.

"I was wondering how long you'd last."

"I lasted the whole performance."

"Barely."

Everyone smiled.

The tension that had followed them all evening had finally begun to melt away.

A few minutes later, there was another knock.

The door opened.

Several company staff members entered, applauding as they walked in.

"You all worked so hard."

"The performance looked fantastic."

"The formations were so clean."

One by one, the members bowed.

"Thank you."

"No, thank you," one performance director replied.

"You represented the company well tonight."

Their manager had been unusually quiet.

He was standing near the television mounted on the wall, his phone vibrating almost continuously in his hand.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

He looked down.

Another notification.

Then another.

One of the coordinators noticed.

"...What's happening?"

The manager looked up slowly.

"I've received over sixty messages in the last few minutes."

Joanne blinked.

"From who?"

"Everyone."

"The company."

"Broadcast staff."

"Friends."

He turned the screen of his phone toward them.

Messages kept appearing before anyone could finish reading the previous one.

'Who is the rookie group?'

'That dance break was insane.'

'Congratulations.'

'Your girls just stole the audience.'

Even the room grew quiet.

The manager smiled.

Not the calm smile he usually wore.

This one was filled with disbelief.

"I think..."

He paused, almost as if he couldn't believe the words himself.

"...people are about to know exactly who ROSIES are."

Outside the waiting room, the cheers inside the arena continued as MAMA moved on to the next stage.

Inside...

Five young women looked at one another.

They had walked onto the stage as rookies.

Somewhere during those few unforgettable minutes...

Something had changed.

The coordinators didn't give them much time to celebrate.

A knock sounded at the waiting room door before it opened.

One of the event coordinators stepped inside with a clipboard in hand.

"ROSIES."

"You'll be seated shortly."

"We'll need everyone changed within fifteen minutes."

Their manager nodded.

"We'll be ready."

The coordinator smiled politely before disappearing back into the hallway.

Immediately, the room became busy again.

Garment bags were unzipped.

Stylists carefully lifted each dress from its hanger.

Gone were the glittering stage outfits.

In their place were elegant black evening looks prepared specifically for the remainder of the ceremony.

The members disappeared behind changing partitions while hair stylists quietly discussed what needed touching up after the performance.

Bella stepped out first, smoothing the front of her dress.

"...This is much more comfortable."

One stylist laughed.

"It also weighs half as much."

"I noticed."

Joanne adjusted the cuff of her tailored blazer as another stylist straightened the fabric across her shoulders.

"Don't wrinkle it before you sit down."

"I'll try."

"You said that on the red carpet too."

"...I really did."

Nearby, Susu sat patiently while a makeup artist refreshed the corners of her eye makeup.

"You cried?"

Susu looked surprised.

"Did I?"

"Just a little."

"I think it was after we came off stage."

The makeup artist smiled knowingly.

"Understandable."

Across the room, Leah stood still while a hairstylist tucked a loose strand neatly behind her ear.

"There."

The stylist stepped back to admire her work.

"Perfect."

Leah bowed slightly.

"Thank you."

Mili emerged moments later, adjusting the bracelet around her wrist.

She glanced around the room.

"Everyone looks so different in black."

Bella nodded.

"It feels... calmer."

Before anyone could continue, another staff member appeared at the doorway.

"We're ready."

"The seating area has been cleared."

"Our staff will guide you."

The five members instinctively stood together.

One final glance in the mirror.

One last adjustment to a sleeve.

A quiet breath.

Then they followed the coordinators into the brightly lit corridors of MAMA.

The further they walked, the louder the sounds became.

Music from the main stage.

Applause.

The low murmur of thousands of fans.

Security staff politely guided them through the backstage maze until they reached the entrance leading to the audience seating.

The coordinator turned to them.

"When you enter, cameras may already be rolling."

"So just relax."

"Watch the performances."

"And enjoy the night."

The members nodded together.

"Thank you."

With that, the curtains parted.

For the first time that evening...

ROSIES weren't walking onto the stage.

They were walking into the audience—

Not as trainees watching from a television screen.

But as artists sitting among the very idols they had admired for years.
