Lucas's voice was low, urgent, pulling Ava from the haze of desire. "Ava… we need to leave. Now."
She blinked, heart still racing. "W-what? Why?"
He didn't answer immediately. His gaze swept the café, sharp and precise. A shadow lingered near the corner of the window, almost blending into the morning light. Lucas's jaw tightened.
"A day like this…" he muttered under his breath. "I knew it would come… but not this soon."
Ava's hand found his, seeking reassurance. "Lucas… what's happening?"
"Someone's watching us. Someone who shouldn't know where we are—or what we're doing," he said, brushing his thumb across hers in a fleeting attempt to calm them both.
Her stomach sank. "Watching… us?"
"Yes. I thought I could keep you safe. I thought…" His voice faltered, frustration flickering across his face. "I didn't expect them to trace me here. Or to you."
"To me?" Ava's mind raced. "So… all this danger… it's because of you?"
Lucas flinched. Guilt shadowed his features. "I moved here to escape them. To keep you safe. I never wanted you caught up in this."
Her pulse surged. "You could've told me! You should've! I—"
"No time for questions yet. We need to get somewhere safe," he interrupted, gripping her hand tightly.
Arrival at the House
The car ride was tense, filled with the hum of the engine and their quickened breaths. Ava's thoughts were a whirlwind: fear, anger, disbelief, and inexplicable desire. How could she still feel drawn to him after everything?
When they arrived, Ava's eyes widened.
The house was immense, a fusion of modern architecture and classical elegance. Marble floors reflected the sunlight streaming through expansive windows. Velvet drapes in deep jewel tones framed manicured gardens, while antique vases and sculptures dotted every corner. Every detail screamed wealth beyond imagination.
"Lucas… who… who are you? How can anyone working at that office afford… this?" Ava whispered.
His expression softened, eyes tinged with vulnerability. "Ava… I will explain everything about who I am. Every detail. But… not now."
Her chest tightened. Fury overtook fear. "Not now? After everything I've trusted you with?"
Before he could answer, she slapped him. The sound echoed sharply through the lavish entryway. Lucas's eyes widened, both shocked and caught off guard. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling as anger, betrayal, and fear collided. For the first time, Lucas saw another side of her—fierce, unrestrained, untamed. She was no longer the quiet, composed woman from his office. She was raw emotion incarnate.
Lucas stepped back, rubbing his cheek, still staring at her in disbelief. "Ava… I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted you caught in this. I promise… I will protect you. No matter what."
Her tears blurred her vision, yet she caught the intensity in his gaze—vulnerability, raw fear, and desperation mirroring her own. His hand reached toward her, hesitating. "I won't let anyone take you from me," he said, voice low, reverent.
Her anger faltered. Every ounce of fury mingled with love. She wanted to scream, demand answers—but the sincerity in his eyes held her in place.
"I… I can't believe you," she whispered. "You've hidden this from me… from everything… from us. And now… now we're in the middle of it."
Lucas's chest ached. "I know… and I am sorry. But I need you to trust me, even now. I will keep you safe. That is more important than anything."
Her anger and fear clawed at her. "Safe? Surrounded by luxury and secrets? Lucas… it's too much!"
He took her hand gently. "It's not just wealth. It's survival. There are people—dangerous people—who want me gone. My family… my past… my enemies. And now… they've found us."
Ava's pulse raced. His past? Enemies? Years of secrets? She loved him, but the man she knew was only a fragment of the life he had hidden. Her stomach knotted with fear and something else—a confusing desire she couldn't suppress.
"Yes. That's why I acted urgently. The shadow at the café… they've been tracking me. And now… they know about you. About us."
The house, stunning in elegance, suddenly felt fragile. Marble floors, ornate mirrors, priceless art—all seemed a stage for someone to strike.
"You lied to me! You hid your life, your wealth… your identity! And now… now they're here!" Her voice cracked.
Lucas stepped closer, brushing a trembling strand of hair from her face. "I didn't hide it to hurt you. I hid it to protect you. But I swear… I will protect you. No matter what."
The Gun Behind the Bookshelf
Lucas's eyes flicked toward the polished mahogany bookshelf lining the living room wall. With a swift, practiced motion, he slid a hidden panel open, revealing a sleek black handgun nestled inside.
Ava's eyes went wide. Her hand flew to her mouth as a sharp gasp escaped her lips. She almost screamed, her body frozen in shock. For the first time, she felt the full weight of the world Lucas had been hiding.
"Lucas… what… what is that?!" she whispered, trembling.
He kept his gaze sharp, calm but intense. "It's for protection," he said quietly. "For you… for me. For both of us."
Her stomach churned. Her mind struggled to reconcile the man she had been falling for with the one now holding a gun. Lucas saw the fear, the incredulity, the shock—and for the first time, he realized the depth of her strength, the untamed fire he had glimpsed in the slap, in the tears, in her trembling stance."I left my peaceful life,my family just for this ?" She murmured in tears.Maybe my father was right, greener pasture comes with a great risk-she thought
"I've kept secrets to keep you safe," he admitted. "But now… I need you to trust me completely."
Ava's voice trembled. "You… you never told me this. About the danger… the people… this world you live in. You've lied to me… all this time."
Lucas stepped closer, placing the gun carefully on the polished desk, yet his stance remained protective between her and the window. Vulnerability bled into the fierce determination in his eyes. "I did what I had to do. I didn't want you involved. Until now."
Secrets Within the House
Her gaze wandered, noticing subtle wall panels hiding panic buttons, surveillance cameras tucked in corners, reinforced doors with glowing keypads. Even chandeliers seemed part of a silent, intricate security network.
Her chest tightened. This wasn't just a home. It was a fortress.
Lucas's eyes softened. "Ava… We've lived this way for years. My family… they were never ordinary. Powerful enemies, betrayals, debts of blood… I thought I could escape it all here.I moved to this city to be safer. My parents asked me. But some things… they never let go."
Ava's pulse quickened. Years of danger? Blood debts? Secrets? She loved him—but could she survive the storm his past had brought to her doorstep?
Her stomach twisted. She hated that she still felt drawn to him, even as betrayal burned her chest. "You've been running from this… and now I'm in the middle of it. I don't even know who I love… you… or the man I thought I knew."
Lucas's thumb brushed her cheek, wiping away a tear. "I never wanted you involved. I moved here to protect you from the world I was born into. But… I failed. Now… you're part of it."
Despite fear, her heart thumped violently. His presence, touch, and voice pulled at her, igniting a desire she couldn't suppress.
He tilted her chin up. "I need you to focus, Ava. I need you… here, with me."
Her breath hitched. "I… I don't know if I can."
"You can," he murmured. "No matter what comes… we face it together. You and me."
Her body trembled—not from fear alone, but from the intensity of wanting to close the distance, to feel his protection as more than words.
Their foreheads touched, breath mingling, hearts beating in sync. For a heartbeat, the world—the enemies, shadows, unknown—faded. There was only them.
Then a sudden movement at the window snapped her back to reality. Lucas's gaze sharpened.
"They're close," he whispered, pulling back.
Ava's eyes widened in horror. From behind sheer curtains, a tall figure stepped from the shadows, moving silently across the garden. Not the café shadow… someone else.
Lucas moved for the hidden gun, but before he could act, a sound echoed from the hallway—a slow click of a door unlocking.
Ava's heart leapt. She spun around. Someone had already entered the compound.
Lucas's jaw tightened, eyes darkening. "Ava… get ready. They're here. And this time… they've brought the storm."
The luxury, the elegance, the safety—all crumbled in that heartbeat. The house, their sanctuary, had become a trap. The real danger… had arrived.
