Chapter 18 - Healing Hearts

The entrance of Acharya Multispecialty Hospital was unusually crowded.

Doctors rushed through the corridors.

Nurses pushed stretchers toward the emergency ward.

The sound of monitors, hurried footsteps, and anxious voices filled the air.

But Mia heard none of it.

All she could hear was Mayank's uneven breathing against her shoulder.

His tiny body trembled in her arms.

His forehead was burning.

"It's okay... we're here, sweetheart," she whispered, kissing his hair. "Mama won't let anything happen to you."

Mayank didn't answer.

His eyes were barely open.

His little hands weakly clutched the collar of her coat.

Mia hurried toward the pediatric reception.

"I need a room immediately," she said, trying to remain calm. "High fever. It's been increasing since morning."

The receptionist immediately handed her an admission form.

"Please fill these details, Doctor."

Mia nodded.

She adjusted Mayank on one arm and tried holding the form with the other.

Her handbag slipped from her shoulder.

The water bottle rolled across the floor.

Medical reports scattered in different directions.

Her pen fell beneath the reception desk.

She bent slightly, trying not to wake Mayank.

But carrying a four-year-old child while picking everything up was almost impossible.

"I'm sorry..." she muttered to herself. "Just... one minute..."

Before she could reach the papers...

A hand quietly picked them up.

The bottle.

The pen.

The medical reports.

Even her handbag.

She froze.

That hand...

She knew it.

Slowly...

She looked up.

Leo Alexander Kane stood in front of her.

For a second...

Neither of them spoke.

Leo looked from the scattered papers...

To the exhausted woman standing before him...

Then finally...

To the little boy sleeping weakly against her shoulder.

His expression softened instantly.

"What happened?" he asked quietly.

Mia opened her mouth.

"I..."

Before she could answer...

Mayank slowly opened his heavy eyes.

His vision was blurred.

But the moment he saw Leo...

A tiny smile appeared.

"Ir... Iron..."

His voice was barely a whisper.

Leo stepped closer.

Mayank slowly lifted one tiny hand toward him.

"...Man... Friend..."

Leo's heart tightened.

Without thinking...

He gently took Mayank into his arms.

The little boy immediately rested his head against Leo's shoulder as though that was where he belonged.

Within seconds...

His restless body became calm.

Mia stared silently.

She had spent the entire day trying to comfort him.

Yet...

The moment Leo held him...

Mayank relaxed.

Something inside her heart ached.

Leo looked down at the little boy.

"Hey, Cute Little Boy..."

"I'm here."

"You don't have to worry anymore."

Mayank gave the tiniest nod before closing his eyes again.

Leo gently adjusted the blanket around him.

"Let's get our little superhero treated first."

Mia quietly collected herself.

Right now...

Nothing mattered more than her son.

The three of them hurried toward the pediatric department.

A few minutes later...

The pediatrician completed the examination.

He checked Mayank's temperature once again.

103.1°F.

The doctor frowned.

"The fever has become quite high."

Mia immediately asked,

"Any signs of infection?"

"We'll run a few tests."

He looked at Mayank carefully.

"For now, he needs to be admitted."

"We'll start IV fluids immediately."

"And we'll keep him under observation for at least twenty-four hours."

Mia nodded.

"I understand."

The doctor smiled reassuringly.

"Children this age become dehydrated very quickly."

He looked toward Leo and Mia.

"Don't worry."

"I know taking care of children isn't easy."

"Especially for parents."

"You both have done well bringing him here in time."

Mia immediately opened her mouth.

"Doctor, actually he...."

Leo interrupted gently before she could finish.

"We'll do whatever is necessary."

The doctor smiled.

"That's the spirit."

"Now leave the rest to us."

As the nurses prepared the IV line, Mayank whimpered softly in his sleep.

"Mama..."

Mia immediately walked to the bedside.

"I'm here, baby."

"It's okay."

Leo quietly stood on the other side of the bed.

When the nurse inserted the cannula into Mayank's tiny hand...

He cried weakly.

Without thinking...

His little fingers searched for something.

They found Leo's hand.

He held it tightly.

Leo froze.

The tiny grip...

So small...

Yet somehow it felt impossible to let go.

The nurse smiled.

"He trusts you."

Leo looked down at Mayank.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

His chest felt painfully warm.

After everything settled down, the room finally became quiet.

Mayank had fallen asleep under the effect of the medicine.

The rhythmic sound of the heart monitor echoed softly through the room.

Mia sat beside the bed, staring at her son's pale face.

She hadn't eaten since morning.

She hadn't even realized it.

She simply watched him.

As though looking away might make him disappear.

Leo quietly left the room.

A few minutes later...

He returned carrying a tray.

Simple rice.

Soup.

A bottle of water.

He placed it gently on the table beside her.

"Eat."

Mia didn't even look at it.

"I'm not hungry."

"You haven't eaten all day."

"I'm fine."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"But you're not."

She slowly looked at him.

"I'm a doctor."

"I know how to take care of myself."

Leo gave a faint smile.

"Right now..."

"You're just a worried mother."

Silence filled the room.

Mia lowered her head.

Her shoulders slowly began to tremble.

"I couldn't even protect my own son..."

She whispered.

"I'm supposed to heal children..."

"But today..."

"My own child suffered because of me."

The tears she had been holding back all day finally escaped.

Leo quietly pulled a chair closer.

"You didn't fail him."

She laughed bitterly through her tears.

"You don't know anything."

"I hit him."

"I scared him."

"I made him cry."

"And now he's here..."

She looked toward the sleeping Mayank.

"...because of me."

Leo followed her gaze.

"He still reached for you."

Mia looked confused.

"When he cried..."

"He called you first."

"He never stopped needing his mother."

Her tears flowed even harder.

After a long silence...

She finally spoke.

"He's all I have."

Leo remained quiet.

"My husband..."

She swallowed painfully.

"...passed away."

"I've been raising him alone."

"I can't lose him."

The words struck Leo harder than he expected.

A strange pain spread across his chest.

He couldn't understand why.

He simply looked at the sleeping child.

Then back at Mia.

Finally...

He spoke quietly.

"You don't have to worry."

She looked at him.

"I promised I wouldn't disturb your lives."

"I'll keep that promise."

He stood up slowly.

"I'll stay until he's feeling better."

"Tomorrow evening..."

"I'll leave Bangalore."

"And after that..."

"You won't have to see me again."

Mia looked down at her trembling hands.

A part of her felt relieved.

Another part...

Broke a little more.

Neither of them noticed...

That fate wasn't finished with them yet.

Outside the room...

An emergency alarm suddenly echoed through the hospital corridors.

And within minutes...

Everything was about to change.
