Cherreads

Chapter 45 - Chapter Forty Five

King Wen awarded Tormund the skin of the lion he had killed. It took many obsidian blades to skin it. The attendants offered to dry it for him, and he said, "Nay, for I have much experience with the drying of animal skins." He showed off the skins he was wearing with a laugh. For Thomas, Gendry, and the younger Mangana, he offered their picks from a lesser treasure room, and the group headed back into town. Later, in the treasure room, Gendry found an ancient forge hammer tied to a very old book; he couldn't read it, but took it anyway. Mangana found a spear with a black tip and a small ring tied to it. Thomas looked and looked and finally spied an old dusty chest buried under some other junk. He opened it and found a journal written in Westerosi. He asked King Wen about it, and Wen said it had been there long before he was born and that he knew nothing about it. There were some other items in the chest, so he took them.

Later, when he had time, he started reading the journal and realized it was Brandon the Shipwright's journal. He ran to the rooms Beth and Arya had taken, finding Beth folding some clothes, saying, "Where is Arya?" She pointed to a doorway, and he burst through it shouting, "Arya, Arya!" It was a small 'bath' room, and Arya was bathing when he burst in. She glared at him and ducked down in the water to chin level. Instinctively, she covered her chest with an arm, saying, "What possible good reason do you have for invading my privacy?"

Thomas apologized and sat in a chair with his back to her. He relayed the story of the tiger hunt and the rewards they got. He told of the very old chest he found and the journal it contained. Listen, he said, "My name is Brandon Stark and in the year...." "What?" Arya screamed. She jumped from the pool naked, then caught herself, grabbed a towel around her, and pulled a chair next to Thomas. He handed her the journal and said, "Dear heart, this is my gift to you." He stood up and walked out of the room. Hours later, he knocked on the door of Arya's rooms again. He had the chest with him this time. Arya said, "Who is it?" and he responded. She called him in. She was still in the towel, reading the journal over for the second time. He sat next to her on the bed and handed over the chest. She fairly squealed when she saw it. It had old Stark markings on it. She jumped up, slowly losing the towel as she ran for a changing screen, and the vision of when it dropped is still burning in the mind of Thomas, wherever he lies long dead. She threw on some clothes and came back out. Thomas's mind was still in the throes of processing what he had just seen. She giggled, then slapped him, saying, "You Cad!" He looked at her wide-eyed, and she grabbed his face and kissed him again, saying, "Let's see what's in it." First, she pulled out a locket inscribed 'To my dearest, so he will always remember me.' The small painting of a stunning red-haired woman with a ruby collar was inside, and the word 'Melony' was inscribed on the other side. Arya kept looking at the woman's face, sure she had seen her before. Next from the chest came a shattered sword, the pieces wrapped in an old, ragged cloth. The blade was of some strange metal, and an ornate hilt adorned it. There was a small lock of red baby's hair inside a folded piece of paper. There were a couple of small trinkets, like what would go on a woman's keepsake bracelet, and, lastly, a ring. The ring bore the standard of House Stark. She held and treasured each item again, gently placing them back inside the chest with the journal. She looked deeply in Thomas's eyes again and said, "Nothing anyone has ever given me can match this. Nothing can repay it. It will go with us back to Winterfell as my bride's gift when we return there to marry. There's no time for a relationship here, but should we survive, I will make it up to you then."

She pushed Thomas's mouth shut, and he nodded happily, then got up and left the room. Arya noticed that Beth had entered the room at some point, and Beth ran and hugged her, saying, "That was so romantic!"
