Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 – The Choice to Break Orders

The hideout trembled violently, the protective spell along the walls flickering like a wounded heartbeat.

Jane gasped, her hand flying to her chest. She knew that feeling—sharp, burning, wrong.

Levi.

She spun toward the exit.

"Jane, wait!" Mira shouted, rushing in front of her. Harrow followed, blocking the doorway completely.

Jane's breathing grew uneven, panic clawing up her throat.

"Move."

"No," Mira said firmly. "It's too dangerous outside. You have to stay here—Levi can handle herself."

Jane's eyes snapped up, blazing with fury and fear. "Don't lie to me. I can feel her."

Harrow stepped closer, trying to soften his voice. "Jane, please. Levi told us—"

"Get. Out. Of. The. Way!" Jane screamed.

A pulse of energy rippled through her body. The faint purple shimmer beneath her skin flared brighter, veins glowing like embers under ash. With strength that wasn't entirely human—or witch—Jane shoved them aside.

Mira stumbled back in shock. Harrow barely caught himself against the wall.

"I won't stay here while she destroys herself for me," Jane said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I won't fail her again."

Outside, the night sky roared.

Levi hovered above the battlefield, her wings trembling under the strain. Blood—black and thick—ran down her arm, dripping onto the shattered ground below. Her hair burned a violent red, power screaming through her body as she gathered everything she had left.

Shax steadied himself in the air, violet eyes narrowing. "You're finished, Leviathan."

Levi didn't answer.

She pulled her power inward, compressing it, forcing control through pain and will alone. Her shield flared briefly—then shattered as she chose offense over defense.

With a guttural cry, Levi surged forward.

Her fist collided with Shax's chest.

The impact cracked the air itself.

A massive shockwave exploded outward as demonic energy tore through him, sending General Shax flying uncontrollably through the sky—his body hurled toward the distant city like a fallen star, smashing through structures in a trail of purple sparks and collapsing concrete.

Silence followed.

Levi remained suspended in the air, breathing hard, wings shuddering violently. Feathers drifted down around her like dark snow.

"Stay down…" she whispered hoarsely. "Please… just stay down."

Behind her, the protective barrier around the hideout pulsed wildly—unstable, strained.

And Levi felt it.

Jane was coming.
