Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Learning to Lean Without Falling.

As I began to calm down, the realization of how inappropriate my behavior had been hit me hard. I had been leaning on Jackie too much, and it made me uncomfortable. Even though I'd been divorced and a single mother for the past five years, I always told myself I needed to be strong, independent.

I quickly pushed Jackie away, my face flushing with awkwardness. "Thank you, Jackie," I muttered, my voice trembling. "I really appreciate that you came to help, but... I need to stand on my own."

He looked at me with those same caring, protective eyes. "Elwyn, it's okay. You don't have to do everything on your own. Everyone needs help sometimes, and I'll always be here for you."

I lowered my head, feeling torn and uneasy. Jackie was right, of course, but part of me just couldn't admit how vulnerable I was. I'd gotten so used to facing life's challenges alone that accepting help felt alien.

But Jackie didn't let me sit in that discomfort for long. He stepped closer, resting a reassuring hand on my shoulder. His eyes locked with mine, full of understanding. "Elwyn, you've done more than enough. You're stronger than you think. But no one can carry all the weight forever. Let me share some of that burden with you."

His words lightened something inside me. I looked up, my eyes softening in gratitude. "Thank you, Jackie. I'll try to open up more. But for now, I need to take care of Dennis first."

He nodded, a small smile gracing his lips. "Of course. Dennis needs you to be strong for him. But just remember, I'll be right here, whenever you need me."

A wave of emotion welled up inside me. I hadn't just found peace and safety in Jackie rescuing me from the nightmare, but in the way he reminded me I didn't have to face life alone. I could lean on those who cared for me, and that didn't make me weakit made me stronger.

In the stillness of the night, under the dim streetlights, I felt like I'd rediscovered something precious: love, safety, and trust. Life would still bring challenges, but now I knew I wouldn't have to face them alone. I had Jackie, my son, and people who cared about me.

We both sat down, waiting for the police to arrive, finding a quiet spot. Jackie held my hand tightly, not letting go. In his presence, I felt safesomething I hadn't felt in years.

Time seemed to crawl by until the distant glow of police car lights appeared. I sighed in relief, knowing this nightmare was nearing its end. Jackie helped me to my feet, and together, we walked toward the approaching officers.

They asked questions, taking my statement as I recounted everything: the abduction, the terror, and how Jackie had saved me. The officers listened intently, their pens moving quickly across their notepads. One of them, his voice gentle, said, "We'll find him. Don't worry."

I sat on the cold bench at the police station, trying to remain composed as the officers pressed for more details. The bright fluorescent lights made me feel even more drained. The barrage of questions was dizzying, and every time I tried to respond, my voice cracked, failing me.

"Can you tell us what happened?" an officer asked, his tone both firm and understanding.

I tried to speak, but my throat was dry, and the words refused to come out. I shook my head, tears rolling down my cheeks. I felt weak, powerless to explain the horror I'd just lived through.

Jackie, standing beside me, saw my distress. He stepped in, gently placing a hand on my shoulder before turning to the officer. "I'm sorry, she's been through a lot. Let me take her to the car so she can rest, and I'll answer your questions."

The officer nodded, clearly understanding. "That's fine. Take your time. We'll wait."

Jackie helped me stand, guiding me out of the overwhelming atmosphere of the police station. His presence was like a lifeline, his unwavering eyes never leaving me. Once outside, I felt a little better, but I was still trembling, my body exhausted.

Once we reached the car, Jackie leaned in, his voice soft but steady. "Stay here and rest. I'll handle everything."

I looked at him, my eyes swollen from tears, and for the first time in a long time, I wanted to lean on someone. Jackie was that person. I knew I could trust him.

As I sat in the car, I watched him walk back inside to finish the statement. I watched his strong, reliable figure disappear into the station, and for the first time in ages, I didn't feel alone. I had someone who truly cared for me, someone ready to stand by me.

Sitting there, I began to calm down. The nightmare was far from over, but I no longer had to carry it alone.

When Jackie returned, he opened the door, his eyes warm and full of love. "It's done. Let's go home."

I gave him a faint smile, feeling a rush of gratitude. "Thank you, Jackie. I don't know what I would've done without you."

He smiled back, his face glowing softly in the night. "I'll always be here, Elwyn. We'll face everything together."

As we drove away, the familiar roads and houses passing by, I realized I was finally heading home.

As I walked into the house, a wave of relief washed over me. The living room lights were already on, and there was Dennis, my son, standing by the door. He rushed over to me, wrapping his small arms tightly around me. His innocent face was a mixture of worry and joy seeing me home safe.

"Mom, you're back! I was so worried about you," Dennis said, his voice trembling but filled with happiness.

I hugged him tightly, tears welling up in my eyes again. "I'm here, Dennis. Everything's okay now. I'm so sorry for making you worry."

In that warm moment, my heart was full of love and gratitude. But then I noticed Dennis glancing over at Jackie with a playful glint in his eyes. Suddenly, Dennis raised his hand and gave Jackie a highfive, exclaiming, "Mission accomplished!"

I looked at the two of them, completely puzzled. "Dennis, what's going on? I don't understand."

Dennis grinned, his eyes sparkling with pride. "Mom, I waited and waited, and when you didn't come home, I called Uncle Jackie. He went to rescue you! Uncle Jackie's our superhero!"

I turned to Jackie, surprised and touched. "Jackie, how did you know where I was?" I asked, still confused about how it had all happened.

Jackie sat down on the couch, his eyes bright as he began explaining. "It was all thanks to Dennis being so smart and quickthinking," he said, smiling at my son, who was beaming with pride as he sat beside me.

"What happened?" I asked, still trying to piece it together, looking between the two of them in amazement.

Jackie continued, "When Dennis realized you weren't coming home, he called one of your colleagues and asked about your schedule. After finding out where you were last seen, Dennis called me."

Dennis sat up straighter, his eyes glowing. "Uncle Jackie and I worked together to figure out where you were. He checked the security cameras and found the taxi driver's license plate!"

I stared at Dennis, unable to believe what I was hearing. "You did all that, Dennis? I'm amazed!"

Dennis grinned, looking proud. "I just wanted to make sure you were safe, Mom."

Jackie chimed in, "After we got the plate number, I contacted the vehicle registry to track the car's route, which led me to where the driver had taken you."

I paused, suddenly realizing Jackie wasn't just an ordinary friend. The way he was able to get the information so quickly, the connections he hadit was more than I had ever imagined. "Jackie… how did you do all this? You're not just a regular friend, are you?"

Jackie smiled softly, a hint of mystery in his eyes. "Elwyn, there are things I haven't told you. My work involves security and protection. I have the resources to help in situations like this."

I was taken aback, but full of admiration. "Thank you, Jackie. I don't know how to thank you enough."

Dennis yawned, his eyes heavy with sleep. "Mom, I'm tired. I'm going to bed now. Goodnight, Mom. Goodnight, Uncle Jackie."

I bent down and kissed his forehead. "Goodnight, Dennis. I love you."
