The Hidden City had already tested Kael in ways he had never imagined, but the next trial was unlike anything before. As he, Ravik, and Thalyra entered a narrow corridor, the walls shimmered and rippled like liquid silver.
"This…" Kael whispered, "this is different."
Thalyra's eyes were sharp. "The Maze of Mirrors. It is not just walls—it reflects your past, your fears, your doubts. And sometimes… it can show things that never really happened."
The guardians moved cautiously. The echo-wolf padded silently beside Kael, the phoenix glowed softly above, and Vryllos Belyx circled high, wings beating against the invisible wind currents that seemed to rise from the maze itself.
Kael tightened his grip on Oath-Render. His reflection stared back at him from every angle, but sometimes, the reflection moved differently—grinning when he didn't, walking toward him when he stood still.
THE FIRST REFLECTION
Kael's first step triggered the maze. The corridor stretched endlessly, walls bending impossibly. One mirror rippled like water, and suddenly, Kael saw his parents—faces full of pride, full of life—but then their smiles turned into fear and despair.
He staggered back. "No… this isn't real," he muttered. But his heart raced. Memories of home, of childhood, of choices he had made… all twisted into something terrifying.
Ravik's hand rested lightly on his shoulder. "It is a test of perception, Kael. You must not be fooled by what seems real. Trust what you know in your heart."
Kael inhaled deeply. "I understand. I can't let my fears control me."
Step by step, he moved forward, forcing his eyes to see beyond the illusions. Each reflection tried to distract, tempt, or scare him—but Kael remembered his lessons from the Trial of the Elements. Focus, adapt, and remain calm.
ILLUSIONS OF FRIENDSHIP
As he progressed, a familiar voice called his name. "Kael… Kael, over here!"
He turned, and a figure emerged from the reflections. It was Thalyra… but her face was twisted, her eyes glowing faintly.
"Thalyra?" Kael asked, wary.
The figure smiled in a way that chilled him. "Come with me, Kael. Leave Ravik, leave the guardians. The Klyn wants you to follow me. Power beyond imagination awaits."
Kael raised Oath-Render. "You're not real. This is the maze."
The figure laughed, fading into dozens of smaller images, each calling him, tempting him. Kael's heart pounded. Every instinct told him to trust, but every lesson told him to be careful.
He clenched the sword. "I choose my own path. I trust myself. I trust my guardians."
The illusions shattered, leaving him alone in the silver corridor.
FACING THE SHADOW
Suddenly, a dark figure appeared in front of him. Its shape was similar to Kael, but taller, sharper, and radiating cold energy.
"This… is me?" Kael whispered, fear creeping in. "Or… a shadow of me?"
The figure mirrored his movements perfectly, mocking every step. Kael swung Oath-Render, but the shadow blocked each strike effortlessly.
"You cannot defeat me with force alone," the shadow hissed. "I am doubt, fear, and regret. I am the part of you that the Klyn wants to break."
Kael felt his resolve falter. Every mistake he had made, every failure, every moment of doubt—the shadow whispered them all. His heart raced.
Then, he remembered Ravik's words. "You must trust what you know in your heart."
Kael closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. He focused not on fighting, but on accepting the shadow. It was a part of him, yes, but it did not control him. Slowly, he extended his energy, and Oath-Render glowed brighter.
The shadow hissed, twisted, then dissolved into thousands of tiny silver fragments, absorbed back into the mirrors.
THE CENTER OF THE MAZE
Kael reached the center of the maze, a circular chamber filled with mirrors floating mid-air. Each mirror reflected a different possible future—some bright and hopeful, others dark and terrifying.
Thalyra appeared beside him. "This is the heart of the maze. The Klyn wants you to doubt every choice. But the future is not fixed. You decide it, Kael. Not the Klyn, not your fears."
Ravik added, "The maze teaches control, perception, and trust in oneself. You have learned to face fear and deception. Remember this. It will be vital for what comes next."
Kael looked around at the countless reflections of himself. He smiled faintly. "I see now. Every choice matters. Every step shapes the world. And I will not be controlled by shadows."
The chamber pulsed with light. The mirrors faded, revealing a clear path forward. Kael, the guardians, and Thalyra stepped into the next corridor—the Hidden City opening new secrets and challenges before them.
Kael survives the Maze of Mirrors, facing illusions of loved ones, friends, and himself. But the Klyn's deception is far from over. What other hidden trials will the city reveal, and can Kael maintain trust in himself and his allies?
