Chapter 83 - Chapter 80 : New Dawn

[St. Thomas Hospital — April 13, 2009, 2:00 PM]

Half-Sack looked better with color in his face.

The hospital bed made him seem smaller than usual, but the grin was back—that irrepressible optimism that had survived the war with LOAN, survived the federal attention, survived a knife attack that should have killed him.

"Doc says another week, maybe two." He shifted against the pillows, wincing slightly. "Then physical therapy for the arm. Should be back to full duty by summer."

"No rush."

"Easy for you to say. You're not the one stuck watching daytime TV." He gestured at the screen mounted on the wall, currently showing some talk show I didn't recognize. "Did you know there are people who actually care about celebrity drama? Like, genuinely care?"

"Horrifying."

"I know, right?" He laughed, then winced again. "Okay, need to stop doing that. Hurts."

The room was full of flowers—club members had been rotating through since Half-Sack stabilized, each one bringing something. Gemma had coordinated most of it, treating the prospect like a son she'd nearly lost.

"Cole." Half-Sack's voice was suddenly serious. "I never said thanks. Properly, I mean."

"You don't need to—"

"Yeah, I do." He met my eyes. "When Cameron showed up, I thought... I thought that was it. I was going to die in that kitchen, and he was going to take Abel, and there was nothing I could do to stop it." His jaw tightened. "But you came. You got there in time. You saved both of us."

"You're the one who kept fighting. You're the one who caught Abel when he fell."

"Because you gave me the chance." He shook his head. "I've been in this club for years, Cole. I've seen a lot of guys come and go. Most of them are tough, loyal, everything you'd want in a brother. But you're different. You think ahead. You prepare. You see things coming that nobody else sees."

If you only knew how literally true that is.

"I got lucky."

"No." Half-Sack's voice was firm. "You got ready. There's a difference." He extended his uninjured hand. "Whatever you need, brother. For the rest of my life. I'm there."

I took his hand, felt the strength in his grip despite the weakness in the rest of him.

"Heal first. Then we'll talk about debts."

[Teller-Morrow — April 14, 2009, 10:00 AM]

Church was fuller than usual.

Every member present, every seat taken. The chapel felt different in the wake of the Cameron attack—more solemn, more unified. Near-tragedy had a way of pulling people together.

Clay opened with the obvious: "The IRA connection is gone. Cameron's dead, Edmund's dead, their network is compromised. We need to discuss alternatives."

"Diana in Fresno can bridge the gap," Bobby reported. "Higher cost, but reliable. I've already placed an initial order."

"What about long-term?"

"We've got options." I pulled out the folder I'd prepared. "Three potential suppliers, all vetted, all viable. None as good as the Irish deal was, but together they provide diversification. We're never dependent on one source again."

Clay nodded, passing the folder around. "Good work. Cole, you'll manage these relationships?"

"That's the plan."

"Then let's vote on authorization."

The vote was unanimous. New supplier relationships approved, SAA given authority to negotiate terms.

But the meeting wasn't over.

"One more thing." Jax stood, drawing attention. "The night of the attack, Cole was at Jax's house within minutes of the first call. He'd assigned Half-Sack to protection detail days earlier. He'd anticipated Cameron's move before anyone else saw it coming."

"What's your point?" Tig asked.

"My point is that this club owes Cole more than most of us can repay." Jax looked around the table. "My son is alive because of him. Half-Sack is alive because of him. The IRA situation could have been a disaster—Abel gone, a brother dead, our reputation destroyed. Instead, we're sitting here planning for the future."

"Hear, hear," Bobby murmured.

"So I'm proposing something." Jax met my eyes. "Cole's been SAA for a few months. He's proven himself ten times over. But I want it on record—officially—that this club recognizes what he's done. That we understand we'd be in a very different place without him."

Clay's gavel struck the table. "Noted and recorded. Cole Ashford's actions during the Cameron Hayes incident are formally recognized by SAMCRO as exceptional service to the club."

[Cole's Apartment — April 15, 2009, 6:00 AM]

Sarah was awake when I got home.

She'd been waiting—I could see it in the way she moved, the coffee already made, the questions held back until I was ready. Days of holding everything together while the club processed what had happened, while the hospital kept Half-Sack for observation, while the paperwork and the explanations and the careful storytelling played out.

I walked through the door and stopped.

"Hey."

"Hey."

No more words. I crossed the room, wrapped my arms around her, buried my face in her hair. The tension I'd been carrying—days of it, weeks of it, months of building toward a crisis that might have destroyed everything—finally began to release.

"It's over," she said softly. "Whatever it was. It's over."

"One part of it." My voice was muffled against her shoulder. "There's always more."

"I know." She pulled back, looked at my face. "But tonight, you can rest. Tomorrow, you can plan. Right now, just... be here."

"I'm here."

"Good."

She led me to the couch, sat with me in the pre-dawn quiet. The sun wasn't up yet, but the sky was lightening—that particular gray-blue that came before true sunrise.

"Two seasons down," I murmured, not realizing I'd spoken aloud until the words were out.

"What?"

"Nothing. Just... thinking about how much has changed since I got here."

Fourteen months. Two major storylines. Donna alive, Half-Sack alive, Abel safe, Zobelle dead, LOAN destroyed, Stahl reassigned, Cameron neutralized. The future is no longer what I remember.

Is that good? Is it better?

Does it matter, as long as the people I love survive?

[Cole's Apartment — April 15, 2009, 7:30 AM]

We watched the sunrise from the apartment roof.

It was Sarah's idea—she'd discovered the access months ago, had brought up blankets and cushions to create a small retreat from the world below. We sat together, her head on my shoulder, watching the sky turn orange and gold over Charming.

"What happens now?" she asked.

"I don't know." The honest answer. "The club's in a good place. Better than it's been in a while. But there's always something coming. New threats, new complications, new problems to solve."

"That doesn't scare you?"

"It terrifies me." I looked at her—really looked, taking in the face I'd come to love more than I'd thought possible. "But I've got people worth protecting. That makes the fear manageable."

"Including me?"

"Especially you."

She smiled, that particular expression that made everything else seem smaller. "I knew what I was getting into when I fell for an outlaw. The danger, the violence, the uncertainty. I accepted all of it because the alternative was not having you."

"You could still walk away."

"I could." She met my eyes. "I won't."

The sun cleared the horizon, flooding the rooftop with warmth. A new day. A new beginning.

Two seasons down. Two major deaths prevented. The future is no longer what I remember.

That's terrifying and hopeful in equal measure.

Whatever comes next—Season 3's chaos, Season 4's cartel, all the storylines I only partially remember—you'll face it.

Not alone anymore.

I took a breath. Held it. Let it go.

"Ready for breakfast?" Sarah asked. "I'm thinking waffles."

"Waffles sound perfect."

We climbed down from the roof, back to the ordinary world of coffee and morning and the simple rituals that made life worth living. Behind us, the sun continued to rise.

Ready. Whatever comes next, you're ready.
