CHAPTER 16
When Truth Begins to Fight Back
EXT. COMMUNITY RADIO STATION – MORNING
(EXT. – Exterior, outside a building)
A banner flaps in the wind.
"LIVE TOWN HALL: VOICES OF THE CITY."
People gather.
Kelvin stands nearby, unsure.
Mira holds his hand.
MIRA OKAFOR
You don't have to speak if you're not ready.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
If I stay silent now,
the lies will start sounding like truth.
(simple meaning: false stories repeated often feel real)
They walk inside together.
INT. RADIO STATION HALL – CONTINUOUS
(INT. – Interior, inside a place)
Chairs filled.
Cameras rolling.
A HOST speaks into a microphone.
HOST
Today, we talk about reputation, rumors, and responsibility.
Kelvin Adeyemi is here.
Murmurs.
Mixed reactions.
INT. HALL – MOMENTS LATER
Kelvin stands at the microphone.
Hands shaking slightly.
He breathes in.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
I was taught that silence is wisdom.
But I've learned something else.
He looks around.
KELVIN ADEYEMI (CONT'D)
Silence can also be fear.
A woman from the crowd stands.
WOMAN FROM CROWD
So you deny hurting people?
Kelvin nods slowly.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
I deny manipulation.
I deny pretending.
I admit love didn't always end well.
But love ending is not a crime.
Applause from some.
Scoffs from others.
KELVIN ADEYEMI (CONT'D)
A proverb says:
When a drum is beaten by many hands,
the sound becomes confusing.
(simple meaning: too many voices distort the truth)
Mira watches, proud but scared.
INT. FRIENDS' HANGOUT – SAME TIME (COMEDY CUT)
Dan Kay watches the broadcast on TV.
DAN KAY
Look at Kelvin speaking grammar like a lawyer!
OSCAR BELLO
Life will teach you vocabulary whether you like it or not.
They laugh.
INT. RADIO STATION – BACK TO SCENE
Another voice from the crowd.
YOUNG MAN
What about the women who chose richer men over you?
Kelvin smiles sadly.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
That question answers itself.
Light laughter.
KELVIN ADEYEMI (CONT'D)
Everyone has the right to choose comfort.
But no one has the right to rewrite my character.
Strong applause.
INT. ELLA'S APARTMENT – DAY
Ella watches the live broadcast.
Her face tightens.
Anger mixes with fear.
ELLA DANIELS
This is getting out of hand.
Her phone buzzes.
A message:
"People are asking questions."
She swallows.
ELLA DANIELS
(whispers) Truth is dangerous when it wakes up.
EXT. RADIO STATION – AFTERNOON
Kelvin exits.
Crowd reacts differently now.
Some clap.
Some nod respectfully.
A TEENAGE GIRL approaches.
TEENAGE GIRL
Sir… your song helped me leave a toxic relationship.
Kelvin is stunned.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
Thank you for telling me that.
Mira's eyes fill with tears.
EXT. QUIET STREET – EVENING
Kelvin and Mira walk.
Sun setting.
Golden light.
MIRA OKAFOR
Today… you stood up for yourself.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
I stood up for the truth.
There's a difference.
They stop walking.
Face each other.
MIRA OKAFOR
Kelvin…
I don't want to be just the one who waits anymore.
His heart skips.
KELVIN ADEYEMI
Neither do I want to be the man who overlooks gold
while chasing applause.
Silence.
Heavy, meaningful silence.
(simple meaning: emotional pause without words)
INT. KELVIN'S ROOM – NIGHT
Kelvin writes in a notebook.
Lyrics forming.
🎵 SONG – "CHOSEN" 🎵
I was loved by many voices
But silence chose my name
While the world chased comfort
You stayed in the rain
He stops writing.
Looks up.
KELVIN (V.O.)
"Sometimes the heart sees clearly
only after the noise fades."
FADE OUT
