Chapter 42 - Gamers Don’t Have Time for Cutscenes

Seeing that no chūnin had appeared, Hyuga Arin didn't bother answering their questions and directly blanketed the area with "Shuriken · Saturation Fire!"

What kind of player would have the leisure to listen to plot dialogue anyway?

Wasn't it all just smash the skip button?

The three of them experienced, for the first time, what it meant to be completely drowned in shuriken.

"Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!"

The sound of tearing wind screamed past their ears. Even the darkness of night couldn't conceal the silhouettes of several hundred shuriken.

"Where the hell did he get so many shuriken from?!" one bald Rain ninja screamed. It was already too late to escape the area of coverage.

He could only draw the blade at his waist to block.

Clang!

The weight behind the shuriken was far heavier than they'd imagined. After blocking just two, his arms went numb, and he could no longer grip his sword.

The remaining shuriken swarmed in, instantly punching hole after hole through their bodies—yet from those gaping wounds, only streams of water spilled out.

"Water Clone Technique?"

The three figures dissolved into puddles of water.

Hyuga Arin lowered his gaze to the ground.

Two hands suddenly stretched out from beneath the earth, grabbing both of his legs.

Substitution Technique.

His figure vanished from the spot. In the hands that had been clutching his legs, an igniting explosive tag appeared.

"Huh?!"

Sensing something wrong, the Rain ninja tried to throw the tag away—

Too late.

BOOM!

The explosive tag detonated violently, forming a blazing fireball.

Hyuga Arin reappeared on the other side. The moment his feet touched the ground, two figures charged at him simultaneously from left and right, attempting a pincer attack.

Then the Hyuga Arin between them turned into an explosive tag.

BOOM!

Using Substitution Technique again, Hyuga Arin appeared at a distance, watching as two pitch-black human-shaped figures were blown backward.

Substitution Technique + explosive tag—an absolutely perfect combo.

There was still some distance, so the blast didn't kill them outright.

"Explosive tags are this useful—why wouldn't you use them?"

Hyuga Arin casually flicked his wrist, sending two shuriken flying. He had no intention of stepping forward to check whether they could still fight.

Both shuriken struck with pinpoint accuracy, piercing their throats.

[Experience: 487]

He bent down and picked up the two dropped items from their corpses.

[Consumable: Peeping G-200]

[Consumable: Insight D-80]

"Greed Island items from the Hunter world," Hyuga Arin muttered as he stowed the two cards away.

Both cards originated from Hunter x Hunter's Greed Island, though they'd been slightly altered within this game.

Peeping allowed one to see an enemy's drop items.

Insight rendered most genTechnique ineffective.

Both were solid abilities—but unfortunately, they were single-use items.

Drops from Amegakure ninja all came from the Hunter x Hunter world, ranging from Nen abilities to items.

Hyuga Arin looked down at the ground.

"What, still not coming out? If you keep hiding down there, you'll suffocate."

A figure slowly emerged from the earth—it was the older ninja from before. Where his arms should have been…

Honestly, who understands this kind of pain?

Who fights like money doesn't matter, throwing around explosive tags like that?

And since when was that something a genin could casually use?

Not to mention that Technique—the one that instantly swapped positions. He had never seen anything like it.

"What kind of Technique was that, exactly?" the older Rain ninja couldn't help asking.

It didn't resemble anything Amegakure should have.

Hyuga Arin looked at him oddly. "Just Substitution Technique. Don't tell me you don't know it?"

Substitution Technique, my ass.

"You—!" He tried to point at Hyuga Arin, wanting to say something.

Too bad his hand was gone.

Did he really think he could fool someone this blatantly? There was no way he believed that was Substitution Technique.

Hyuga Arin had no interest in continuing the conversation. He pushed off lightly with his foot, closing the distance in an instant. With a flick of his wrist, a bronze-colored blade appeared in his hand.

The older ninja closed his eyes and chose not to resist. Having lost both arms, he had already lost the right to continue as a ninja.

A flash of bronze light.

Hyuga Arin appeared behind him as the older ninja collapsed weakly to his knees.

[Experience: 753]

This guy was fairly strong—just unlucky that he never got the chance to show it.

Hyuga Arin turned back and picked up the dropped item.

[Nen Exorcist Skill Fragment (1/10)]

"It actually dropped directly—could today be my lucky day?"

He hurriedly stored away the [Nen Exorcist Skill Fragment (1/10)].

This item was the key to resolving the Caged Bird Seal.

The Nen Exorcist skill was an extremely powerful support ability in the game. It could remove all abnormal statuses from a player, regardless of system.

Even curse seals like the Caged Bird fell within its scope.

Unfortunately, the drop rate for Nen Exorcist skill fragments was absurdly low, and there was no guarantee who would drop them.

A trash mob might drop one—or it might take killing a jōnin.

Pure RNG.

"Now that I've got the first one, how far off can the second be?"

Activating his Byakugan, Hyuga Arin scanned the surroundings. Inside the manor, Kuromori was locked in a fierce stalemate with a chūnin. For the time being, neither could gain the upper hand.

"This guy is seriously useless."

Hyuga Arin curled his lip and looked in another direction, where a group of ordinary people were moving quickly.

Seeing that Kuromori wouldn't be finishing things anytime soon, Hyuga Arin charged toward that group, heading straight for the back gate.

"Stop him!"

A maid blocked his path. Hyuga Arin vaulted over her with a clean goat jump.

Because of the chaos in the City Lord's Manor, many people were panicking, but most of them were servants or maids.

Hyuga Arin had zero interest in them.

He soon reached the back gate, where he saw a group of armored soldiers guarding a richly dressed man.

At a glance, he confirmed that the man in the center was the mission target.

Shuriken flew once more—this time he didn't even need to use Bear Bo Hands.

"Kunai · Firepower Suppression!"

In the darkness, countless kunai spread out like a sheet of black gauze, sweeping down over the group.

By the time they realized what was happening, it was already too late. The kunai rapidly harvested their lives.

In total, only [Experience: 95].

After everyone was dead, Hyuga Arin stepped forward and looked at the luxurious clothes dyed red with blood.

"Running for your life, and you're dressed this flashy."

Shaking his head, he bent down and picked up the dropped item from the dead noble. No one else dropped anything.

[Decorative Item: Rose]

"Just as expected." Hyuga Arin sighed helplessly. Nobles usually dropped this kind of decorative junk.

Once players reached a high enough level, they could unlock a space called Cozy Home. However, no items from the outside world could be brought into it—only decorative items were allowed.

"Wonder if I'll even get a Cozy Home."

Hyuga Arin stroked his chin thoughtfully.

Although items couldn't be brought inside, Cozy Home could be entered anytime, anywhere. In a sense, it was a pretty decent shelter.
