Chapter 51 - The Direction of the Trap

The black sedan disappeared into traffic.

But the feeling it left behind didn't.

Suo Ran stood still on the sidewalk, Jun Wei's small hand wrapped tightly around his fingers.

For the first time since the chase began, he understood something terrifying.

They weren't running.

They were being guided.

Cai Lang spoke first.

"They're pushing us."

Lian Ziho nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Teacher Liu frowned.

"Pushing you where?"

No one answered.

Because that was the part they still didn't understand.

Jun Wei looked between them.

"Are we going somewhere fun?"

The adults exchanged a glance.

Lian ziho finally sighed.

"I wish."

Jun Wei puffed his cheeks.

"Every mission should have snacks."

Teacher Liu smiled faintly.

"That is an excellent rule."

Suo Ran barely heard them.

His thoughts were still on the message.

If we wanted the boy, we'd already have him.

Which meant Jun Wei wasn't the objective.

He was leverage.

Again.

And that meant the real question was simple.

What did they want Suo Ran to do?

Moving Again

Cai Lang stepped closer.

"We can't stand here."

"I know."

"Where do we go?"

Suo Ran looked down at the phone again.

The photo still stared back at him.

Like proof they were always one step behind.

Then he said quietly,

"Not back to the safehouse."

Teacher Liu agreed immediately.

"They already know that location."

Lian ziho crossed his arms.

"So what's the plan?"

Before Suo Ran could answer...

Jun Wei raised his hand like a student.

"Yes?" Teacher Liu said automatically.

Jun Wei pointed across the street.

"Villains came back."

Every head turned instantly.

The black sedan had returned.

Slower this time.

Almost crawling through traffic.

The window stayed closed.

But the message was clear.

We're still here.

Cai Lang muttered,

"Persistent."

Lian ziho's voice hardened.

"They want us to notice them."

Jun Wei looked impressed.

"They're really bad at hiding."

Teacher Liu crouched beside him.

"That's because they're not hiding anymore."

Jun Wei nodded wisely.

"Boss villains never hide."

Suo Ran exhaled slowly.

"We leave. Now."

They moved quickly toward the next street.

A taxi slowed when Cai Lang raised his hand.

The driver rolled down the window.

"Where to?"

Suo Ran hesitated.

That question suddenly felt dangerous.

Because if they chose wrong...

They might be walking straight into whatever trap was waiting.

Cai Lang leaned into the window.

"Just drive."

The driver frowned.

"Drive where?"

"Anywhere."

The man stared at him.

"That's not how taxis work."

Jun Wei leaned forward excitedly.

"Can we go somewhere with noodles?"

Teacher Liu laughed softly.

"Now that's a destination."

Lian ziho sighed.

"Fine."

He looked at the driver.

"River district."

The driver shrugged.

"Okay."

They piled inside.

Jun Wei climbed between Lian ziho and Suo Ran in the back seat.

The taxi pulled away.

Suo Ran glanced through the rear window.

The black sedan remained parked.

Watching Not following.

Yet.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Traffic lights passed.

Crowds moved on sidewalks.

The city continued like nothing was wrong.

Then Jun Wei whispered,

"Gege?"

"Yes?"

"Are we running again?"

Suo Ran paused.

Then answered honestly.

"Yes."

Jun Wei thought about that.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

Lian ziho looked at him.

"That doesn't bother you?"

Jun Wei shrugged.

"As long as everyone stays together."

Teacher Liu smiled quietly.

"That's surprisingly wise."

Jun Wei grinned proudly.

"I learned it from cartoons."

Cai Lang looked out the window.

"You might be surprised how often cartoons are right."

When the taxi finally stopped near the river district, they stepped out into cooler evening air.

Streetlights reflected on the water.

The area was quieter.

Less crowded.

Cai Lang immediately scanned the street.

"No sedan."

"For now," Lian ziho said.

Teacher Liu folded his arms.

"So what exactly are we dealing with?"

Suo Ran finally answered.

"My father's archive."

Teacher Liu looked confused.

"The scroll?"

Cai Lang nodded.

"The one powerful people want erased."

Teacher Liu looked between them.

"And they think Suo Ran still has it."

Lian ziho added quietly,

"Or knows where it is."

Jun Wei tugged Suo Ran's sleeve again.

"What's a scroll?"

Everyone froze.

Suo Ran crouched down slowly.

"Something very old."

Jun Wei blinked.

"Like treasure?"

Cai Lang answered dryly,

"Exactly like treasure."

Jun Wei's eyes lit up.

"I knew it."

Teacher Liu rubbed his forehead.

"This child is enjoying this far too much."

Suo Ran walked toward the river railing.

The water moved slowly under the bridge lights.

He stared at the dark surface.

"They're not attacking."

"No," Cai Lang agreed.

"They're observing."

Lian ziho stepped closer.

"They want you to panic."

Suo Ran nodded.

"And make a mistake."

Teacher Liu asked quietly,

"What kind of mistake?"

Suo Ran answered without turning.

"Reveal where the scroll is."

The silence that followed was heavy.

Jun Wei suddenly whispered,

"So… villains want treasure."

Cai Lang sighed.

"Yes."

Jun Wei crossed his arms proudly.

"Then we definitely can't give it to them."

Lian ziho looked at him.

"That's the smartest thing said all night."

Jun Wei grinned.

"I know."

Suo Ran's phone vibrated again.

Everyone looked down immediately.

Another message.

Another photo.

But this time...

It wasn't taken at the park but It was older.

A rooftop.

Two figures sitting together.

Suo Ran and Lian Ziho.

Long time ago.

Talking and Laughing.

From across the street.

Watching.

Under the photo were four words.

"We know everything."

Lian ziho felt his chest tighten.

"That was long time ago."

Cai Lang's voice dropped.

"They've been watching longer than we thought."

Teacher Liu looked genuinely shaken.

"How long?"

Suo Ran slowly locked his phone.

"I don't know."

Jun Wei tugged his sleeve again.

"Gege?"

"Yes?"

"Why do villains like photos so much?"

Suo Ran looked down at him.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Photos meant something simple.

Proof.

Proof they had always been there.

Proof this chase had started long before Suo Ran ever noticed.

And the worst question now wasn't who was chasing them.

It was something much worse.

How long had the hunt actually been going on?

And even more frightening...

Who started it?

The wind along the river was colder now.

The city lights reflected in the water like scattered pieces of glass.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

The message still sat inside Suo Ran's phone like a weight.

"We know everything."

Someone had been watching for years.

Jun Wei finally broke the silence.

"Gege?"

Suo Ran blinked and looked down.

"Yes?"

Jun Wei looked around at the adults.

"Everyone looks like someone stole their noodles."

Teacher Liu laughed quietly.

"That's… a very specific comparison."

Jun Wei nodded seriously.

"When people lose noodles they look like that."

Lian Ziho sighed.

"None of us lost noodles."

Jun Wei crossed his arms.

"Then we should eat."

Cai Lang blinked.

"…What?"

Jun Wei pointed toward a small food stall down the street.

"Food."

Teacher Liu raised an eyebrow.

"You're hungry again?"

Jun Wei looked offended.

"I was stressed."

Lian Ziho almost smiled.

"You were chasing balloons."

"That was very stressful."

No one answered.

Jun Wei tugged Suo Ran's sleeve.

"Gege."

"Yes?"

"If heroes don't eat, they lose strength."

Teacher Liu chuckled.

"That logic is hard to argue with."

Cai Lang looked at Suo Ran.

"You should eat."

Suo Ran shook his head.

"I'm not hungry."

Jun Wei stared at him for three full seconds.

Then slowly turned to Lian Ziho.

"Lian Gege."

"Yes?"

"Gege is being dramatic."

Teacher Liu laughed out loud.

Lian ziho rubbed his forehead.

"He's not wrong."

Jun Wei pointed toward the stall again.

"Food."

Five minutes later they were sitting around a small metal table beside the street vendor.

Steam rose from bowls of noodles.

The smell was warm and comforting.

Almost normal.

But the tension still hung quietly in the air.

Jun Wei happily kicked his feet under the table.

"See? This is good."

No one argued.

Lian Ziho quietly pushed a bowl toward Suo Ran.

"Eat."

Suo Ran frowned.

"I said I'm not hungry."

Lian ziho picked up the chopsticks and placed them in his hand.

"You haven't eaten all day."

Cai Lang watched the exchange carefully.

Teacher Liu noticed too.

Jun Wei leaned over dramatically.

"Gege."

Suo Ran sighed.

"What?"

Jun Wei pointed at the bowl.

"Heroes eat noodles."

Suo Ran stared at him.

Then slowly took a bite.

Jun Wei beamed like he had just solved world peace.

"Victory."

Teacher Liu chuckled.

"You're very persuasive."

Jun Wei nodded proudly.

"I know."

Across the table, Cai Lang watched Lian ziho quietly refill Suo Ran's tea cup.

A small gesture...Automatic.

Like something he had done a thousand times before.

Teacher Liu noticed the same thing.

Their eyes met briefly.

Neither of them commented.

But they both understood something.

These three had history.

And it showed in the smallest actions.

For a few minutes the conversation was lighter.

Jun Wei swung his feet under the table.

"Teacher."

"Yes?"

"Did you ever fight villains?"

Teacher Liu raised an eyebrow.

"I teach children."

"That's harder."

Lian ziho almost choked on his tea.

Cai Lang smirked slightly.

Teacher Liu sighed.

"I walked right into that one."

Jun Wei nodded wisely.

"Kids are dangerous."

Suo Ran looked at him.

"You're one of them."

Jun Wei shrugged.

"I said what I said."

For a moment...

They actually laughed.

A small moment of peace.

Something they hadn't felt in days.

As the meal continued, Cai Lang quietly studied Suo Ran.

The tension in his shoulders.

The way he kept checking the street.

The way his hand occasionally rested on Jun Wei's head without thinking.

Then he looked at Lian Ziho.

And noticed something else.

Lian ziho was watching Suo Ran too.

Not openly.

But constantly.

Cai Lang leaned back in his chair.

Teacher Liu spoke quietly beside him.

"They care about each other."

Cai Lang didn't look away from them.

"Yes."

Teacher Liu added gently,

"You do too."

Cai Lang finally looked at him.

"Observation skills are dangerous for a teacher."

Teacher Liu smiled.

"It comes with the job."

Eventually the bowls were empty.

Jun Wei leaned back happily.

"Best mission dinner ever."

Suo Ran sighed softly.

"I'm glad someone is enjoying this."

Jun Wei grinned.

"You are too."

Suo Ran shook his head.

"Not really."

Jun Wei leaned closer.

"You smiled earlier."

Suo Ran froze slightly.

Lian looked down at the table.

Cai Lang noticed.

Teacher Liu cleared his throat.

"Well… we should discuss what happens next."

The air grew serious again.

Lian ziho nodded.

"We can't go back to the safehouse."

Cai Lang agreed.

"They're watching it."

Suo Ran looked at Teacher Liu.

"What about your place?"

Teacher Liu shook his head immediately.

"Dormitory security would ask questions."

Jun Wei raised his hand again.

"Sleep in the amusement park."

"No," everyone said at once.

Jun Wei sighed.

"You people have no imagination."

Teacher Liu finally spoke carefully.

"There's something else."

Everyone looked at him.

"I can't stay with you."

Jun Wei frowned.

"Why?"

Teacher Liu smiled gently.

"I have to go back to the school dorm."

Jun Wei's shoulders dropped slightly.

"Oh."

Lian ziho looked concerned.

"You'll be safe?"

Teacher Liu nodded.

"They're not interested in me."

Cai Lang spoke quietly.

"Not yet."

Teacher Liu gave him a small smile.

"Let's hope it stays that way."

Jun Wei tugged his sleeve.

"Will you come back tomorrow?"

Teacher Liu nodded.

"Yes."

Jun Wei seemed satisfied with that.

"Okay."

The table grew quiet again.

Suo Ran finally spoke.

"So where do we go tonight?"

Lian ziho exhaled slowly.

"We keep moving."

Cai Lang nodded.

"That's the safest option."

Jun Wei raised his hand again.

"Yes?" Lian ziho said tiredly.

Jun Wei pointed at the sky.

"Camping."

"No."

Jun Wei sighed dramatically.

"You people reject every good idea."

Teacher Liu chuckled.

"Being responsible is boring."

Jun Wei leaned against Suo Ran.

"I miss when missions were just cartoons."

Suo Ran gently ruffled his hair.

"Me too."

The Message____

Just as they stood up to leave...

Suo Ran's phone vibrated again.

Everyone froze.

He looked down slowly.

Another message.

Another photo.

This time taken from across the street.

The five of them sitting at the noodle stall.

Jun Wei smiling.

Lian ziho leaning toward Suo Ran.

Cai Lang watching them.

Teacher Liu standing beside the table.

Under the image were three simple words.

"Nice dinner."

Jun Wei leaned over.

"Oh cool, they took a family photo."

No one laughed.

Because if someone had taken that photo...

Then the watcher was still here.

Close enough to see everything.

Which meant the real question wasn't if they were being followed.

It was much worse.

The street outside the noodle stall had grown quieter.

Most shops were closing.

Streetlights flickered on one by one, stretching long shadows across the pavement.

Jun Wei walked between Suo Ran and Lian Ziho, still holding the red balloon string tightly in his hand.

He looked up at the night sky.

"So… where are we going now?"

No one answered immediately.

Cai Lang walked slightly ahead, scanning the street like he always did.

Teacher Liu checked the time again.

Lian ziho finally replied.

"Somewhere safe."

Jun Wei frowned.

"You said that yesterday."

Suo Ran glanced down at him.

"And?"

"And yesterday we moved again."

The boy stopped walking.

Everyone slowed.

Jun Wei looked around at the adults with suspicious eyes.

"You people are very bad at staying in one place."

Cai Lang muttered quietly,

"That's unfortunately true."

Teacher Liu smiled faintly.

"Sometimes adults have complicated schedules."

Jun Wei crossed his arms.

"Are you all avoiding taxes again?"

Lian ziho almost laughed.

Suo Ran rubbed his forehead.

"Yes."

Jun Wei nodded seriously.

"Taxes really ruin everything."

They kept walking.

A taxi passed.

Another turned the corner.

The city felt restless tonight.

Suo Ran finally said quietly,

"We'll stay somewhere for tonight."

Jun Wei blinked.

"Like a sleepover?"

Cai Lang answered,

"Something like that."

Jun Wei brightened.

"Okay, that sounds fun."

None of the adults had the heart to tell him it wasn't.

Ten minutes later they stopped in front of a narrow building.

A faded sign glowed weakly above the entrance.

Jun Wei tilted his head.

"This place looks like a spy movie."

Lian ziho sighed.

"That's not comforting."

Cai Lang pushed the door open.

"Temporary."

They stepped inside.

The lobby smelled faintly like old carpet and cheap soap.

Cai Lang handled the desk while the others waited.

Jun Wei leaned against Suo Ran and whispered,

"Are we hiding?"

Suo Ran forced a calm tone.

"No."

Jun Wei looked up slowly.

"You paused."

Suo Ran sighed.

"You notice too much."

Jun Wei smiled proudly.

"I'm observant."

The hotel room was simple.

Two beds.

One window.

A small table.

Jun Wei immediately jumped onto the bed and bounced twice.

"Approved."

Lian ziho sat down on the other bed.

"You are not a hotel inspector."

Jun Wei pointed at the mattress.

"Quality control is important."

Cai Lang stood near the door.

Teacher Liu leaned against the desk.

For a moment everything felt strangely normal.

Then Jun Wei asked again.

"Why are we changing places again and again?"

The room went quiet.

Suo Ran sat beside him.

"It's temporary."

Jun Wei frowned.

"You said that before."

Suo Ran brushed the boy's hair back.

"We're just traveling a little."

Jun Wei stared at him for several seconds.

Then said calmly,

"That's a lie."

Cai Lang looked away to hide a smile.

Lian ziho coughed softly.

Teacher Liu rubbed his temple.

Suo Ran sighed.

"You're too smart."

Jun Wei nodded proudly.

"I know."

Jun Wei flopped onto the bed and stared at the ceiling.

Then suddenly sat up again.

"Oh!"

Everyone looked at him.

"I have school tomorrow."

The adults exchanged glances.

Jun Wei continued casually.

"Should I go?"

Lian ziho spoke first.

"That might not be a good idea."

Teacher Liu hesitated.

"Your classmates have been asking about you."

Jun Wei brightened.

"Really?"

"Yes."

Jun Wei turned to Suo Ran.

"I want to go."

Suo Ran didn't answer immediately.

Because the idea of sending Jun Wei somewhere public now felt dangerous.

But keeping him away from normal life felt just as wrong.

Jun Wei noticed his hesitation.

"Gege?"

"Yes?"

"Did I do something wrong?"

Suo Ran immediately shook his head.

"No."

Jun Wei looked down at the balloon string wrapped around his finger.

"Then why do we keep running?"

The room fell silent again.

Finally Suo Ran pulled him into a hug.

"We're not running."

Jun Wei sighed.

"You said that already."

Suo Ran smiled faintly.

"Then maybe we're just… moving slowly."

Jun Wei considered that.

"Okay."

Teacher Liu checked the time again.

"I should go."

Jun Wei sat up.

"You're leaving?"

"I have to return to the school dorm."

Jun Wei nodded slowly.

"Will you come back tomorrow?"

Teacher Liu smiled.

"Yes."

Jun Wei seemed satisfied.

"Okay."

Teacher Liu looked at Suo Ran before leaving.

"You know where to find me."

Suo Ran nodded.

"I know."

The door closed softly behind him.

Night

Jun Wei yawned loudly.

"Okay I'm tired."

Lian ziho crossed his arms.

"That happened suddenly."

Jun Wei shrugged.

"Long missions."

He crawled under the blanket.

Then looked up again.

"Gege?"

"Yes?"

"If I go to school tomorrow… can we stop traveling?"

Suo Ran felt something twist in his chest.

"Maybe."

Jun Wei smiled sleepily.

"Good."

Within minutes he fell asleep.

The Adults

The room stayed quiet.

Cai Lang stood by the window.

Lian ziho leaned against the wall.

Suo Ran sat beside the bed watching Jun Wei sleep.

Finally Lian ziho spoke.

"You shouldn't have lied to him."

Suo Ran nodded.

"I know."

Cai Lang pulled the curtain slightly aside.

Checking the street.

"He's a kid."

"He's smarter than most adults," Lian ziho replied.

Suo Ran sighed.

"I just wanted him to rest."

The Mystery Outside

Across the street…

A black car waited in the darkness.

Inside the car, a man watched the hotel window.

His phone screen glowed softly.

On the screen...

A live camera feed.

From inside the hallway.

Room 307.

The door Suo Ran had just closed.

The man smiled faintly.

Then typed a message.

"Target secured for the night."

A reply came instantly.

"Good."

Another message followed.

"Tomorrow the boy goes to school."

The man looked back up at the hotel window.

And whispered quietly,

"Perfect."

Because schools had crowds.

Children...Noise...Chaos.

The perfect place for something to happen.
