Chapter 19 - Forgotten Requirement

The silence that followed the disappearance of the three Sand shinobi was thick, awkward. No one quite knew what to say after what they had just witnessed.

Naruto was the first to break it, scratching his head with that expression of his that indicated he hadn't understood a thing.

"Chūnin Exams?" he repeated, blinking. "I just don't get it."

Konohamaru, who had observed the whole scene from a safe distance with his friends, shook his head in a theatrically grown-up gesture. "You disappoint me, Naruto-niisan." He crossed his arms with an air of superiority. "The Chūnin Exams are the test that all genin must pass to advance in rank. It's obvious."

"HOW IS IT OBVIOUS?!" Naruto exploded, his pride wounded. "No one explained anything to me!"

Sakura sighed, rubbing her temple.

Kaito intervened. His calm voice cut through the air. "Besides introducing yourself, there are requirements. At least eight completed missions and a recommendation from the team's Jōnin sensei."

Naruto and Sakura were silent for a moment. Then, they both wore the same worried expression.

"Eight missions..." Sakura murmured, mentally counting. "I think we have them... but the recommendation..."

"Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto exclaimed, his blue eyes widening. "He'll recommend us?! Do you think he'll consider us suitable?!"

The mental image of Kakashi, with his ever-present book and carefree attitude, nodding lazily as he said "sure," made Kaito suppress a wry smile.

"You'll have to ask him about that," he replied simply.

It was then that Hana, who had been silently processing the information, tensed up beside him. Her fingers gripped Kaito's arm with an urgency that immediately put him on alert.

"Kaito," she whispered, her voice tinged with suppressed panic. "If that's the case... we... how are we supposed to show up?"

The world stopped for a second.

Hana's words hit Kaito like a bucket of ice water. The Jōnin sensei's recommendation. The requirement. The damned requirement that his mind, preoccupied with training, planning their escape, and simply surviving, had completely overlooked.

Saito was dead.

Their sensei, the cold and efficient man who had trained them, who had covered for them on that cursed mission, lay in an unmarked grave, half his body mummified. There was no one left to recommend them. No one to vouch for their participation.

Damn it.

Daiki paled as the realization hit him. "Wait... so... all the training, all the effort...?"

"Don't say that," Kaito interrupted, his mind racing. "It's not decided yet."

But inside, a storm was brewing. How could he have forgotten something so fundamental? The stress, the fear, the weeks of brutal training... but that was no excuse. A mistake like that could cost them everything.

Naruto, oblivious to the three of them' internal crisis, looked at them in confusion. "What's wrong? Don't you have a sensei or something?"

"We did," Konohamaru chimed in, seemingly privy to information from every corner of the village. "But I heard my grandfather mention a team that lost their Jōnin on a mission. Is that you?"

The three of them remained silent.

...

Meanwhile, in the Hokage's meeting room...

The Third Hokage's tobacco smoke curled lazily toward the ceiling as his tired eyes scanned those present. The village's jōnin were gathered, each with their respective teams in mind.

"We've reviewed the rules," said Hiruzen Sarutobi, his voice deep but clear. "Now, let's proceed with the recommendations. Instructors of the rookie teams, please come forward."

Asuma Sarutobi was the first to step forward. "My team, Team 10, is ready. Ino, Shikamaru, and Chōji have completed the required missions and have my recommendation."

Hiruzen nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. The son of his old friend Shikaku certainly had potential.

Kurenai Yūhi was next. "Team 8 is also ready. Kiba, Hinata, and Shino have shown exceptional growth. I recommend them."

Another nod. The Aburame and Hyūga clans, along with the young Inuzuka, made an interesting group.

Finally, Kakashi Hatake stepped forward with his characteristic laziness, one eye closed in what could have been a smile or simply sleep. "Team 7 will also participate. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura... they have potential." He paused significantly. "I recommend them."

Hiruzen raised an eyebrow. Kakashi rarely recommended anyone. For him to do so with this team, and so soon, was... unusual. But he said nothing. He just nodded.

"Very well. We then have Teams 7, 8, and 10 as Konoha's rookie representatives in this year's exams."

There were murmurs of approval among the jōnin present. It was the first time in years that so many rookies had entered. Normally, only experienced teams repeated the exam.

But then, Hiruzen spoke again.

"However... there's an outstanding matter."

Silence fell over the room.

"Team 11." The Hokage let the name hang in the air. "Three genin, significantly younger than the rest of the participants. They lost their jōnin sensei, Saito, on a high-risk mission just a few weeks ago." His eyes scanned the room. "The question is: should they participate?"

Immediately, the reactions were varied.

"Participate? They're practically children!" exclaimed a stern-looking jōnin. "Without a sensei to guide them, it would be a massacre. The exams aren't a playground."

"But they completed the required missions," another pointed out. "That's on record. Technically, they meet the requirements."

"Technically, yes. But a jōnin's recommendation is part of the requirement. And their jōnin is..." The voice trailed off; no one wanted to say the word.

"Dead," someone finished bluntly. "Your jōnin is dead. You can't participate without a valid recommendation."

The debate intensified. Some argued that rules are rules. Others, that it was cruel to even consider sending those children to the slaughter. Still others, that their sensei's heroism on his last mission deserved some kind of recognition.

It was then that a thunderous voice rose above all the others.

"SILENCE!"

Might Guy stepped forward, his eyes shining with an intensity he rarely displayed outside of his "Burning Youth" mode. His imposing presence instantly silenced the arguments.

"Hokage-sama," he said, his voice more serious than usual, though still retaining that vibrant tone that characterized him. "I knew Saito. We weren't close friends, but we crossed paths on several missions. He was a... quiet man. Cold, even. But he was also a jōnin who took his duty with absolute seriousness."

He paused, his eyes scanning those present.

"On his last mission, when faced with a vastly superior threat, what did he do? Did he flee? Did he surrender?" Guy's voice rose. "NO! He stayed behind so his three young genin could escape! He sacrificed his life for the youth under his care!"

No one said anything. The truth was uncomfortable, but undeniable.

"Those three boys," Guy continued, "have been training on their own ever since. I've seen them myself, from afar, striving with a determination that would make any sensei weep with pride. They want to participate in these exams. They want to honor their master's sacrifice in their own way."

He turned to the Hokage, his posture as firm as a rock.

"I propose that they be given the opportunity. Not as a favor, but as a show of respect for the jōnin who gave his life for the village. Let them participate. Let them prove whether Saito's sacrifice was worthwhile."

The silence stretched on.

Then, a movement. Kakashi Hatake, the Copy Ninja, the war hero, nodded slowly. He said nothing, but his gesture was clear.

Asuma Sarutobi did the same, a brief but firm nod.

One by one, other jōnin began to nod. Not all, but enough.

Hiruzen Sarutobi watched the scene with a mixture of surprise and pride. His village, despite its shadows and its problems, was still capable of honoring its fallen.

"Then it is decided," he declared, his voice echoing in the hall. "Team 11 is officially registered for the Chūnin Exams. May their performance honor the memory of their sensei."

Hours later, as the sun was setting behind the hills of Konoha, an unknown jōnin knocked on the door of the small room Kaito shared with Daiki in his house (Hana was in another room next door).

The man, his face expressionless, handed over three sealed scrolls.

"Applications to participate in the Chūnin Exams," he said, his voice as flat as the paper he held. "They have been approved. Report to the Academy building, room 301, first thing tomorrow morning. Don't be late."

And he left, as silently as he had arrived.

Kaito held the scrolls in his hands, feeling their weight. They were light, almost insignificant. But they represented so much...

Daiki appeared beside him, his eyes wide. "Does that mean...?"

"Yes," Kaito confirmed, a slow, dangerous smile curving his lips. "We're going to participate."

The door next door burst open. Hana stormed into the room, her blue hair a mess and her light blue eyes sparkling with indescribable excitement.

"I GOT ONE TOO! WE'RE GOING TO PARTICIPATE! HOW? WHY? I DON'T UNDERSTAND BUT I'M SO HAPPY!"

She launched herself at them in a group hug that nearly knocked them over. Daiki laughed, a nervous, relieved laugh. Kaito allowed the moment, a strange warmth settling in his chest.

When they finally separated, Hana looked at them seriously.

"This is for Saito-sensei, right? For what he did for us."

Kaito nodded slowly. "Yes. And we're not going to let him down."

Daiki clenched his fists, his jaw tight. "I'm going to get so strong that... that... that his sacrifice will be worth it a thousand times over!"

Kaito looked out the window, where the moon was beginning to rise over Konoha.

Tomorrow it all begins. The exam. The chaos. The invasion I know is coming. And I'll be right in the middle of it all.

But I'm not alone anymore. I have these two. And I have a goal.

To survive. To protect them. And to build something from the ashes.

He took a deep breath, slipping his scroll into the inside pocket of his jacket.

It was time to show all his hard work.
