Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Offer

The offer came disguised as opportunity.

I received the invitation first.

Subject: Strategic Advancement DiscussionLocation: Executive Conference Room BAttendees: Board Representatives

No agenda.

That alone was enough to raise alarms.

The room was smaller than the main boardroom. Less ceremonial. More deliberate. Three members sat at the table when I entered, folders already open.

"Mr. Reed," one of them said. "Thank you for coming."

I took the seat offered.

"We've been reviewing your performance," another continued. "Your trajectory is… notable."

"I appreciate that," I replied carefully.

They exchanged glances.

"There's interest in accelerating your development," the first said. "A leadership track with regional oversight."

My pulse quickened. "That's significant."

"It is," he agreed. "But it requires independence."

The word landed exactly where it was meant to.

"Specifically," the second added, "distance from Executive Oversight."

I understood.

"You're asking me to step away," I said.

"Formally," the third replied. "Reassignment to a different division. Different reporting structure."

I leaned back slightly. "And Ms. Sheldon?"

Their expressions didn't change.

"She remains CEO," one said. "But perception matters. We need clarity."

Clarity.

A clean separation.

"This would be framed as growth," the first added. "A vote of confidence."

"And if I decline?" I asked.

The pause was brief but telling.

"Then the board will need reassurance elsewhere."

I stood after the meeting ended, the offer echoing in my head like a question I wasn't ready to answer.

Evelyn called me an hour later.

"I heard," she said.

"Of course you did."

"They didn't wait," she added. "They came to me too."

"What did they offer you?" I asked.

A short laugh. Humorless. "Stability."

I exhaled slowly. "At what cost?"

She didn't answer immediately.

"They want a statement," she said. "A visible restructuring. Something decisive."

"They want you to choose," I said.

"Yes."

I closed my eyes briefly. "So do they."

"Lucas," she said softly, "this offer protects you."

"It removes me," I replied.

"From risk," she said. "From speculation."

"And from you."

Silence.

"That wasn't the intent," she said.

"But it's the effect."

She didn't deny it.

"They're forcing a narrative," I continued. "Either I grow elsewhere, or you prove there was never anything to question."

Her voice lowered. "This isn't fair."

"No," I agreed. "But it's efficient."

Another pause.

"If you take it," she said, "they'll stop watching."

"And if I don't?"

"They won't."

I thought of everything she had protected. Everything she was willing to sacrifice.

"This isn't a choice," I said. "It's leverage."

"Yes," she replied quietly.

"And you won't tell me what to do."

"No," she said. "I won't."

I smiled faintly. "You never have."

"I need an answer by Friday," she added.

I looked out the window at the city below—glass and steel and decisions that never felt personal until they were.

"Then I'll give you one," I said.

After the call ended, I realized something unsettling.

The offer wasn't about my future.

It was about drawing a lineand forcing one of usto stand on the other side.
