Chapter 178 - Episode 165: Choosing

Choosing

The silence lasted only a few seconds.

Yet somehow...

it changed the room.

Nobody seemed quite sure what to say.

Kai looked between the two of them before scratching the back of his neck.

"...No wonder you're impossible to find these days."

His voice was light, almost teasing.

The spell broke.

Rui leaned back against the wall with a knowing grin.

"You've basically moved in."

A few quiet chuckles followed.

Wei lowered his eyes to the cup in his hands.

A faint smile appeared despite himself.

"...Maybe."

It was barely above a whisper.

No one laughed at him.

No one pushed the joke any further.

The conversation drifted away as naturally as it had arrived.

Dev suddenly remembered an old cram school teacher everyone hated.

Kai immediately began imitating the man's impossibly serious face.

Rui nearly choked on his drink laughing.

Within minutes the room was noisy again.

Only two people remained unusually quiet.

Across the table, Jian absentmindedly folded the corner of an empty worksheet.

He hadn't expected that answer.

Not because it wasn't true.

Because Wei hadn't needed to think before saying it.

At Jian's.

As though there had never been another place worth mentioning.

Wei stared down at the melting ice in his cup.

The words echoed quietly in his own mind.

He could have answered—

At home.

He could have said—

Here and there.

Instead...

his heart had answered before his thoughts ever had.

For some reason, that realization made it difficult to look up.

Outside, the afternoon slowly surrendered to evening.

The light pouring through the windows softened into shades of amber.

Someone checked the clock.

"...We should probably call it a day."

Nobody argued.

For the first time in weeks, everyone looked equally exhausted.

Books disappeared into bags.

Loose worksheets were stacked together.

Coffee cups found their way back to the kitchen.

Chen carefully gathered the answer sheets before anyone accidentally left them behind.

Kai stretched until his shoulders cracked.

"I don't think my brain works anymore."

"It barely worked before," Rui replied.

Kai sighed.

"I'll miss you too."

Dev laughed.

"Let's survive the exams first."

"That's asking a lot."

Jian's mother stepped into the living room carrying a small bag filled with homemade rice balls wrapped carefully in paper.

"I made a few extra."

She smiled as she handed one to each of them.

"Eat them tomorrow before your exam."

Kai accepted his with both hands.

"...Auntie, if I pass, it's because of these."

"If you pass, it's because you studied."

"...Let's pretend it's the rice ball."

Everyone laughed.

Even Jian's mother couldn't hide her smile.

One by one, bags found their way onto shoulders.

Shoes slipped back on.

The once-crowded living room slowly emptied.

Chen bowed politely.

"Thank you for letting us study here."

"Come back after your exams."

"We will."

Dev nodded enthusiastically.

"We'll celebrate."

Rui opened the door first.

Kai followed close behind.

"Good luck."

"You too."

"Don't oversleep."

"I won't."

"You definitely will."

"...Probably."

The familiar teasing continued all the way through the gate.

Then...

the laughter gradually faded into the evening.

Only Jian and Wei remained near the entrance.

For a brief moment, neither moved.

There were no plans left to make.

No one asking—

"Tomorrow?"

No one deciding whose house they would study at next.

Tomorrow...

the examinations would begin.

The routines that had quietly shaped their summer would finally come to an end.

The realization settled over them with unexpected weight.

Jian reached for the scooter helmet hanging beside the door.

"...Ready?"

Wei nodded.

"...Yeah."

The town looked different after sunset.

Streetlights reflected softly across damp pavement left behind by an afternoon shower.

The evening air carried the scent of wet earth and distant cooking fires.

Their scooters rolled quietly through the narrow streets.

Not side by side.

Not far apart.

Exactly the distance they always kept.

The engines hummed steadily beneath the stillness.

Neither of them spoke.

There wasn't any reason to.

The silence between them no longer searched for words.

It simply traveled alongside them.

They passed familiar places without slowing.

The old stationery shop.

The bridge overlooking the narrow river.

The convenience store where Dev always bought too many snacks.

The little shrine tucked between two houses.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Yet somehow...

nothing felt quite the same anymore.

The memory of that afternoon lingered between them.

Neither had forgotten.

At the next red light, both scooters came to a gentle stop.

The traffic was light.

Only a single truck rumbled through the intersection before disappearing into the night.

The signal remained red.

Jian kept his eyes on the empty road ahead.

Without turning his head, he spoke quietly.

"...You didn't even think before saying that."

Wei smiled to himself beneath his helmet.

He already knew which words Jian meant.

For a moment, he watched the traffic light instead of answering.

Then he let out a slow breath.

"...Because it's true."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The light turned green.

Neither of them moved immediately.

Then, almost together, the scooters eased forward once again.

No embarrassment remained.

No explanation was needed.

The conversation ended exactly where it should.

Some truths didn't become clearer by talking about them.

They simply became quieter.

The roads grew emptier the farther they rode.

One by one, houses switched off their lights.

The sounds of the town settled into the calm rhythm of another summer night.

Eventually, the familiar crossroads appeared ahead.

It was where they separated every evening.

One road led toward Jian's neighborhood.

The other toward Wei's apartment.

Jian slowed first.

Wei matched his speed.

For a brief moment, both scooters idled side by side beneath the glow of a single streetlamp.

Neither reached for another conversation.

There wasn't one left to have.

Wei lifted one hand from the handlebar in a small, familiar wave.

"See you."

Jian nodded.

"...Tomorrow."

Wei smiled.

"...Tomorrow."

Then the engines pulled gently in different directions.

Two beams of light stretched across the quiet streets before slowly drifting apart.

Neither of them looked back.

Neither needed to.

Some choices were made with long conversations.

Others arrived so quietly that, by the time you noticed them, they had already become part of your everyday life.

Wei had never stopped one day and decided where he belonged.

There had been no promise.

No confession.

No moment grand enough to remember forever.

Somehow...

between shared breakfasts, unfinished Physics problems, late-night tea, and ordinary evenings that slipped into one another without asking permission...

he had simply arrived there.

And perhaps...

the quietest choices were always the ones that changed a life the most.
