Chapter 5 - Farmland

After spending half the day within the city finishing up with his tasks, Cedric headed to the farmlands outside the city.

The city of Valemont is surrounded on all sides by farmlands as far as the eye can see, leading to a prosperous city. There are also multitude of villages dotted around the farms for the farmers to live in.

People tend to the fields with the summer heat beating down on them, while merchants move up and down the roads conducting commerce across the territory. In certain places, pastures are filled to the brim with animals.

Cedric looked around with a smile on his face. The fields look complete unlike the beginning of the game. This brought him more hope that he absolutely can do it.

He walked out towards one of the fields after he spotted a person.

"What's your name?"

"Whose ask-"

The farmer stopped speaking after he looked up, seeing his lord in front of him and immediately got down to the floor.

"My-my-my lord! Forgive me for my insolence!"

"Be at ease, I didn't come to reprimand you, instead I came to ask you about the fields. I want to know more about the farmland."

Cedric pointed at the fields around him, while looking at the farmer with a soft face.

"Ah?"

"Will you be able to tell me?"

Cedric looked at him with a questioning face.

"Of course, of course my lord!"

The farmer quickly jumped up and beckoned his lord to follow.

Ron was about to say something, but Cedric stopped him.

"As you can see my lord, we farm half the field while leaving the rest fallow, though lately the soil has not been doing so well."

Cedric looked down at the soil with a thought.

Hmm, we need to change two-field system to either the three-field or the four-field before the soil gets worse.

Prior to the beginning of the game, there was a great famine caused by both the civil war and failing fields from the two-field system.

"We also dug many irrigation channels for the crops as you can see."

The farmer pointed at the branching channels.

"Lately we've also been having issues with monsters coming at destroying the fields in the north but thankfully the soldiers and knights have fought them off before they could cause injuries and death to the people."

"I see..."

That reminds me, I have to check on our military power sometime this month.

After going around looking at the soil and making mental plans, Cedric headed back to the castle.

He went straight to his office to write down future plans that he needed done. The first of which was planning for the three-field system.

The three-field system was a form of crop rotation where one field would be planted with one set of crops one year and the next with another set of crops, and finally the last year would be left fallow. This would end preserving fertility more leading to higher yields. Of course the benefits of this would come after a few years.

Though he written it down, he didn't know if the people follow him by doing it, so he had to test it on a small field.

Next he, drafted a few plans on the city, especially regarding sanitation and where to place the pumps. For sanitation, the easiest way would probably be ditches on both sides of the road flushing waste out towards the sea. With some early water pumps, he could get the water at a higher level before using gravity to send the waste down towards the sea. He would also need to make sure the places where everyone gets drinking water from does not interact with the sewage, since Cholera was not a good disease to get.

Another thing he had to do was with bathing. Most people here stank really badly due to the difficulty of getting enough water to bathe. Using public baths, he could at least improve some of the hygiene for the average person.

All in all, everything was a win-win situation.

"Alfred"

"Yes, my lord?"

Alfred walked into the office with his same professional look.

"Alfred, Take these, I want you find people to work on these. I've labeled the most critical ones and the least ones. They need to be completed in at least two or three years. If you can get it faster that would be better."

Alfred looked at his lord quite confused, but took the papers to view. His calm quickly cracked seeing the dozens of plans his lord made. Reading further, he realized how amazing the plans were.

"As you command my lord, I'll have the people start work on these as soon as possible."

"Good."

Just then, a soldier frantically entered the room.

"My lord! Monsters are rushing out of the forest!"
