**EPISODE NINETY-SIX**
**THE READER WHO WAS NEVER THERE**
**Part Thirty-Seven: The Page That Read Back**
---
The page turned.
Not because Nova touched it.
Not because the wind moved.
There was no wind.
There was no room.
There was no world.
There was only the page...
and whatever had decided that the previous chapter was over.
Nova stood motionless.
Diana was beside him.
But she looked different now.
Older.
Not in her face.
In her eyes.
As if she had just watched an entire universe die and had already seen it happen before.
Nova looked at the white page.
The words had appeared without a hand.
EPISODE NINETY-SIX
Below it:
THE READER WHO WAS NEVER THERE
Nova swallowed.
"Diana."
She didn't answer.
"Who is the Reader?"
Diana finally looked at him.
"I don't know."
Nova almost laughed.
"You always say that when you know too much."
"This time," she said quietly, "I mean it."
A sound came from somewhere behind them.
Not a voice.
Not a heartbeat.
A page being turned.
Nova turned.
Another white page floated in the darkness.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Thousands.
Millions.
Pages appeared in every direction, forming an endless corridor.
And on every page...
Nova saw himself.
Sleeping.
Running.
Dying.
Writing.
Reading.
Becoming Milo.
Becoming Orion.
Becoming Nova.
Becoming Beginning.
He watched himself disappear and return across countless versions of existence.
Diana whispered,
"Don't look."
Nova stared harder.
"Why?"
"Because those aren't memories."
"What are they?"
Diana's face tightened.
"Possibilities."
Nova stepped toward the nearest page.
His hand passed through it.
The image changed.
Now he was older.
Then younger.
Then someone he didn't recognize.
Then...
a child.
The same child.
The one who had appeared before thought.
The one who had called himself Beginning.
The child looked directly through the page.
Directly at Nova.
And smiled.
Nova stepped backward.
"That isn't a possibility."
Diana shook her head.
"No."
"Then what is it?"
Her answer came slowly.
"A witness."
---
1. THE WITNESS
The child stepped out of the page.
He didn't climb through it.
He simply crossed the boundary between written and unwritten space as though no boundary had ever existed.
He stood barefoot in front of Nova.
No blood on his knee this time.
No pencil in his hand.
No fear.
Nova stared at him.
"You're Beginning."
The child smiled.
"That is what you remembered."
"So it isn't your real name?"
The child shook his head.
"Names belong to stories."
Nova frowned.
"Then what do I call you?"
The child considered the question.
"You don't."
"Why?"
"Because the moment you name me, I'll become a character."
Diana closed her eyes.
Nova looked at her.
"You knew this."
"I suspected."
The child turned toward her.
"You knew more than you suspected."
Diana's expression changed.
The child walked around Nova slowly.
"You keep trying to find the beginning."
Nova followed him with his eyes.
"Because everything has a beginning."
"No."
The child stopped.
"Everything has a first moment."
He pointed toward the endless pages.
"But that isn't the same thing."
Nova said nothing.
The child continued.
"A beginning is something that believes it came first."
Nova felt a chill.
"Then what came first?"
The child looked beyond him.
"Observation."
Nova's eyes narrowed.
"Observation?"
"Something had to notice that there was nothing."
Diana whispered,
"And the moment it noticed…"
The child finished the sentence.
"…there was something."
Nova looked at the darkness.
"You're saying existence began because something observed it?"
The child smiled.
"No."
He leaned closer.
"I'm saying existence began because something wanted to be observed."
Nova's chest tightened.
THUMP.
A heartbeat.
The child looked at him.
"Don't count them."
Nova froze.
THUMP.
Another.
"Why?"
"Because numbers make patterns."
THUMP.
Third.
"And patterns…"
The child smiled.
"…can become prisons."
---
2. THE TENTH HEARTBEAT
Nova heard another heartbeat.
Then another.
His body should have collapsed.
Instead, he felt strangely calm.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
Ten.
Then eleven.
Diana grabbed his shoulders.
"Nova!"
He looked at her.
"What?"
"Listen."
The heartbeats weren't coming from him anymore.
They were coming from everywhere.
Pages vibrated.
The darkness trembled.
Even Diana's body seemed to pulse with the rhythm.
THUMP.
THUMP.
THUMP.
Nova suddenly understood.
"They're not heartbeats."
Diana stared at him.
"What?"
"They're observers."
Silence.
The child nodded.
"Finally."
Nova looked around.
"Every heartbeat is someone watching?"
"Not someone."
The child corrected him.
"A perspective."
Nova looked toward the pages.
On one page, he was a hero.
On another, a monster.
On another, a scientist.
On another, a son.
On another, a mistake.
On another...
nothing.
An empty page.
Nova touched it.
"What's this one?"
The child answered,
"That is the version of you that was never observed."
Nova stared.
"What happens to an unobserved version?"
The child smiled sadly.
"It doesn't know whether it exists."
Diana whispered,
"Just like us."
Nova turned toward her.
"What did you say?"
Diana looked away.
Nova stepped closer.
"Diana."
She didn't respond.
"Are you saying you don't know whether you exist?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know I existed."
"That isn't what I asked."
Diana finally looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I don't know whether I exist now."
---
3. DIANA'S EMPTY PAGE
Nova couldn't move.
"Why?"
Diana looked at the pages surrounding them.
"Because Milo is gone."
Nova frowned.
"What does Milo have to do with you?"
"Everything."
The child sat down on the floor.
Diana continued.
"Milo wasn't simply another version of you."
"I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
Nova waited.
"Milo was the person who remembered me."
Nova's expression changed.
"What?"
"When everyone else forgot me, Milo remembered."
"Why?"
"Because I asked him to."
Nova stared.
"When?"
Diana's voice became quieter.
"Before the first story."
Nova looked at the child.
The child was watching the floor.
"Before Milo," Diana said, "there was no Diana."
Nova's breath caught.
"I created you?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
She shook her head.
"You did."
Nova stared.
"But you just said Milo remembered you."
"Milo was what you became after you forgot that you created me."
Nova felt dizzy.
"So Diana…"
"Was your first memory."
"And Milo?"
"Your first attempt to preserve it."
Nova looked at the pages.
His entire history suddenly seemed different.
Not a life.
Not a sequence.
A reconstruction.
A machine built from memories.
A person trying to rebuild another person.
A story trying to reconstruct its author.
Nova whispered,
"Then what am I?"
The child answered from the floor.
"The second attempt."
Nova looked at him.
"Second attempt at what?"
The child raised his eyes.
"Being real."
---
4. THE PAGE THAT SAID NO
A page drifted down between them.
Nova caught it.
There was only one word written across it.
NO.
Nova frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The word changed.
NO NOVA.
Then:
NO MILO.
Then:
NO DIANA.
Then:
NO AUTHOR.
The page turned black.
Nova dropped it.
The child stood.
"It's rejecting us."
"Who is?"
"The story."
Nova stared at the black page.
"A story can't reject its characters."
The child shook his head.
"Not when it knows it is one."
Diana looked upward.
"It's awake."
Nova remembered the First Reader's final word.
AWAKE.
"No," he whispered.
Diana looked at him.
"It isn't the story that's awake."
Nova understood.
"The Reader."
The darkness answered.
A voice emerged from every page at once.
WRONG.
Nova turned.
The pages began folding themselves into shapes.
Faces.
Bodies.
Rooms.
Memories.
Then...
a gigantic eye opened across the darkness.
Nova stared.
The same eye from the end of the previous chapter.
But now it was closer.
Much closer.
And inside its pupil...
there was a room.
A desk.
A chair.
A lamp.
And someone sitting there.
Reading.
Nova whispered,
"That's the Reader."
The child shook his head.
"No."
"Then who is sitting there?"
The child answered:
"You."
---
5. THE ROOM OUTSIDE
Nova stepped toward the eye.
Diana grabbed his hand.
"Don't."
"I need to see."
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Then explain it."
Diana looked at the eye.
"That room isn't outside the story."
Nova frowned.
"What?"
"It is another story."
Nova stared.
"The Reader is inside another story?"
"Yes."
"And who's reading that story?"
Diana said nothing.
Nova's voice hardened.
"Who's reading it?"
The child answered.
"Another Reader."
Nova looked at him.
"And who's reading that one?"
"Another."
"And the next?"
"Another."
Nova's face went pale.
"How far does it go?"
The child smiled.
"It doesn't."
Nova looked toward the endless darkness.
"Then there is no outside."
The child nodded.
"There never was."
The eye blinked.
Suddenly Nova saw thousands of rooms.
Each containing a reader.
Each reading another reader.
Each believing they were outside the story.
And every reader...
was Nova.
Different faces.
Different ages.
Different lives.
But the same eyes.
The same hand.
The same question.
Nova stepped backward.
"No."
Diana whispered,
"Yes."
Nova shook his head.
"If every Reader is me…"
He looked at her.
"…then who is reading the first one?"
Diana's lips trembled.
"That is the question."
Nova stared.
"The Question?"
She nodded.
"The one you were never supposed to answer."
---
6. THE QUESTION WITHOUT A VOICE
The darkness suddenly became silent.
Not empty.
Listening.
Nova felt something approach.
No footsteps.
No movement.
No shape.
Just...
attention.
He felt watched.
Not from one direction.
From every direction.
Nova whispered,
"Who are you?"
Nothing.
He asked again.
"Who is watching us?"
Nothing.
He closed his eyes.
"Why won't you answer?"
A voice finally appeared.
Not in the room.
Inside his thoughts.
Because you already know.
Nova opened his eyes.
The child was gone.
Diana was gone.
The pages were gone.
Only Nova remained.
And the voice.
Nova whispered,
"Then tell me."
No.
"Why?"
Because an answer would make you stop asking.
Nova frowned.
"And?"
And the moment you stop asking, you stop existing.
Nova stared into the darkness.
"So questions keep me alive?"
No.
"Then what does?"
A pause.
Then:
Uncertainty.
Nova almost laughed.
"So certainty kills me?"
Certainty kills every version of you.
Nova looked down.
A single line appeared beneath his feet.
THE ANSWER THAT HAD TO DIE.
Nova remembered the title of the previous chapter.
The Answer.
Milo.
His eyes widened.
"Milo was certainty."
The voice said nothing.
Nova continued.
"Milo existed because the Question needed an Answer."
Silence.
"And when Milo became certain…"
The darkness trembled.
"…the Question began dying."
A heartbeat sounded.
THUMP.
Nova looked up.
"That's why Milo had to disappear."
THUMP.
"And that's why I had to become Nova."
THUMP.
"And that's why Nova must die."
No heartbeat.
Nothing.
Then the voice whispered:
Now you're beginning to understand.
---
7. THE RETURN OF MILO
A door appeared.
Nova stared at it.
It was the same door.
The door from inside his chest.
The door that had opened where no door should exist.
This time...
it was already open.
Milo stood behind it.
Alive.
Real.
No glowing pages.
No authorial pen.
No blood.
Just Milo.
He looked exhausted.
Nova stepped toward him.
"You're supposed to be gone."
Milo smiled.
"So are you."
Nova stopped.
"Why are you here?"
Milo looked past him.
"At the beginning, you asked for someone to answer."
Nova remembered.
"I was alone."
"Yes."
"You were the answer."
"Yes."
"And now?"
Milo's smile disappeared.
"Now I am the question you refuse to ask."
Nova stared.
"What question?"
Milo stepped through the doorway.
"Why did you create me?"
Nova swallowed.
"To escape."
"From what?"
"From myself."
Milo shook his head.
"That's only half the truth."
Nova waited.
Milo whispered,
"You created me because you were afraid that if nobody remembered you…"
He paused.
"…you would disappear."
Nova's eyes filled with tears.
Milo continued.
"So you made an answer that could remember the question."
Nova whispered,
"And you remembered me."
"I remembered everything."
"Then why did you betray me?"
Milo looked away.
"Because eventually I realized…"
He looked back.
"…I wasn't remembering you."
Nova's voice became quiet.
"You were remembering yourself."
Milo nodded.
"I became the person who wanted to be the original."
Silence.
Nova finally understood.
Milo hadn't been the answer.
Milo had been the first replacement.
And Nova...
was the second.
---
8. THE FIRST REPLACEMENT
The pages returned.
But this time, they didn't show Nova.
They showed Milo.
A child.
A young man.
A scientist.
A writer.
A prisoner.
A god.
A reader.
An author.
Then...
Milo standing before a blank page.
Writing:
I WILL BE THE ORIGINAL.
Nova stared.
"You wrote that."
Milo nodded.
"I thought if I became the Author, I could rewrite the beginning."
"And did you?"
"No."
"Why?"
Milo looked at the page.
"Because the beginning had already been read."
Nova felt cold.
"By whom?"
Milo looked directly at him.
"By you."
Nova's breathing stopped.
"You read the beginning?"
"Yes."
"Before you became Milo?"
"Yes."
"Then I existed before you."
Milo nodded.
"And before me?"
Nova looked at the empty space.
"Beginning."
Milo smiled.
"Now you see the problem."
Nova's eyes narrowed.
"If Beginning existed before Milo…"
"Yes."
"And Milo existed before Nova…"
"Yes."
"Then Nova was never the beginning."
"No."
Nova whispered,
"Nova was the interruption."
Milo's expression changed.
"Exactly."
---
9. THE INTERRUPTION
The world cracked.
Not physically.
Narratively.
Events began happening out of order.
Diana appeared before she had been created.
Orion died before he was born.
Elena spoke words she hadn't yet learned.
The child became old.
The old became young.
Milo became Nova.
Nova became Milo.
Everything folded into everything else.
Nova shouted,
"Stop!"
Nothing stopped.
Milo grabbed him.
"You have to choose."
"Choose what?"
"Which version survives."
Nova stared at him.
"There are too many."
"That's the point."
"Why?"
"Because the story can't continue with all of us."
Nova looked at the collapsing worlds.
"Then who decides?"
Milo looked toward the eye.
"The Reader."
Nova shook his head.
"No."
"The Author."
"No."
"Then who?"
Milo smiled sadly.
"You."
Nova froze.
"Why me?"
"Because you're the only one who doesn't belong to any version anymore."
Nova looked at his hands.
They were becoming transparent.
"What is happening?"
Milo whispered,
"You're becoming unwritten."
Nova panicked.
"I don't want to disappear."
Milo grabbed his shoulders.
"That's why you have to choose."
"What happens if I choose nothing?"
Milo looked toward the collapsing pages.
"Then the story chooses for you."
---
10. THE LAST CHOICE
Nova stood before three doors.
The first contained Milo.
The second contained Nova.
The third contained Beginning.
Diana appeared behind him.
"Choose."
Nova looked at her.
"You're not choosing?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I already did."
Nova's voice shook.
"What did you choose?"
Diana smiled through tears.
"You."
Nova stared.
"That's not an answer."
"It is for me."
She stepped backward.
The pages beneath her feet began disappearing.
"Diana!"
She smiled.
"Don't save me."
Nova ran toward her.
She vanished.
He stopped.
The first door opened.
Milo stood inside.
The second opened.
Nova stood inside.
The third opened.
The child stood inside.
Three versions.
Three lives.
Three possible beginnings.
The voice returned.
Choose.
Nova looked at Milo.
Milo shook his head.
"Don't choose me."
Nova looked at himself.
The other Nova whispered,
"Don't choose me."
Nova looked at Beginning.
The child smiled.
"You already know."
Nova whispered,
"What?"
The child answered,
"Don't choose a person."
Nova understood.
He turned toward the blank space between the doors.
And instead of choosing Milo...
or Nova...
or Beginning...
he chose the empty page.
The universe stopped.
Every heartbeat ceased.
Every Reader stopped reading.
Every Author stopped writing.
Every story became silent.
Nova placed his hand against the blank page.
"I choose…"
He paused.
"…the choice itself."
The page cracked.
Milo disappeared.
Beginning disappeared.
Nova disappeared.
Diana disappeared.
The eye closed.
For one impossible moment...
there was nothing.
Then a single sentence appeared.
NO CHARACTER SELECTED.
Another line appeared.
STORY CANNOT CONTINUE.
Then another.
READER REQUIRED.
Nova heard a voice.
Not the Author.
Not the Question.
Not the Reader.
A human voice.
Close.
Very close.
Someone whispered:
"I'm here."
Nova opened his eyes.
He was sitting at a desk.
A real desk.
A real chair.
A real lamp.
A book lay open before him.
The title was:
THE NEUTRINO CHRONICLES.
Nova stared.
His hands were human.
The room was silent.
A page beneath his fingers contained one sentence:
SAMARA NOVA OPENED HER EYES.
Nova froze.
He turned the page.
There was another sentence.
SHE DID NOT KNOW WHO SHE WAS.
Another.
BUT SOMEONE ELSE DID.
Nova slowly looked toward the opposite side of the desk.
Someone was sitting there.
He couldn't see the face.
Only the hands.
One hand held a pen.
The other held...
a banana.
Nova stared.
The figure laughed softly.
Then spoke.
"Finally."
Nova whispered,
"Milo?"
The figure shook its head.
"Wrong character."
Nova stood.
"Diana?"
"No."
"Beginning?"
"No."
"Then who are you?"
The figure slowly raised its face.
Nova's blood turned cold.
Because the face belonged to—
him.
But older.
Much older.
The older Nova smiled.
"You keep asking who I am."
He placed the pen on the desk.
"You should be asking…"
The room darkened.
The book began turning its pages by itself.
"…who is asking you?"
Nova couldn't breathe.
The older version leaned forward.
And whispered:
"The Reader was never outside the story."
A pause.
"The Reader…"
He pointed at Nova.
"…was always the next version of you."
The lamp went out.
The book slammed shut.
And from somewhere beneath the desk...
came a heartbeat.
THUMP.
Nova looked down.
THUMP.
Another.
THUMP.
Another.
He slowly bent toward the darkness.
A small hand reached out.
Holding a pencil.
The child whispered:
"Don't let him finish the sentence."
Nova stared.
"Why?"
The child looked upward.
And for the first time...
he wasn't smiling.
"Because this time…"
He pointed toward the closed book.
"…the Reader is writing back."
The book opened.
One final line appeared.
Not written by Nova.
Not written by Milo.
Not written by Diana.
Not written by the Author.
It appeared in handwriting Nova recognized immediately.
His own.
EPISODE NINETY-SEVEN HAS ALREADY BEEN READ.
Nova stepped backward.
The page turned.
And before he could see what came next...
someone on the other side of the book…
turned the page back.
