Cora-James POV
Alpha's eyes stayed on me. Like he was analyzing me. Like he was dissecting me.
It was difficult.
It was difficult to just stand there and not cower. Difficult to stop myself from putting a distance between me and this terrifying mountain of a man in front of me.
Difficult to keep my lie straight.
"I just want to help, Alpha"
"Is that so?" He kept his gaze on me. "You just decided to help Chase's wife out of the goodness of your heart?"
I watched his face.
The micro-twitch of his lower eyelid.
The fractional tightening of his ungodly jaw. The fucking way his pulse jumped in the hollow of his throat.
Each of this movement was small. Almost invisible. But I saw them. I was forced to learned to read him years ago by Ma —when I was a child, desperate to please him, to be noticed by the Alpha who held my future in his hands.
So, I doubled down and hoped he won't notice.
