Chapter 8 - Divorce: A great crime committed by the Queen

~{DEBORAH'S POV}~

*

"Are you out of your mind?" He nearly raised his voice at me.

"Yes, I am." I agreed.

"That is impossible and cannot be done in the world we live in. You are bound to me."

"No, I am not!" I bravely said.

"Yes you are! The moment you said those vows on the altar in front of God and several witnesses, you had already tied yourself to me." He sternly reminded me and I couldn't understand why he was so bothered about us getting separated.

Didn't he want that?

I knew it wouldn't be possible to get divorced because it hadn't been legalized but it wouldn't hurt to try, right?

Yet, I wasn't expecting him to be totally against it. If he didn't love me then why was he still unwilling to let me go?

A queen leaving a king is considered a bad omen and highly frowned upon. I could be stoned to death or even be banished but I didn't care, I just wanted to be away from him.

"I cannot agree to that." He firmly said, leaving no room for negotiation but I didn't back down, not now.

"I will prepare the divorce papers and have you st-"

"DIDN'T YOU HEAR WHAT I JUST SAID? I WILL NOT AGREE TO THAT!" His voice thundered loudly as his eyes reddened slightly to show how dangerously serious he was.

My body trembled in fear as I felt the impact of his words but my strong will still persisted.

"You said you want to take a second wife and here I am, giving you a way out because what's the point of having me here?"

"Didn't you hear when I said second? Am I the only king who is doing it for the first time? Didn't your father do the same?" He smartly shot back and I remained quiet while he continued.

"You speak as though you are from another world. This has gone on for centuries and you know it. A king can take as many wives as he want a-"

"Then what about the queen? Why can't she also take as many husbands as she wants? And for your information, my father took a second wife only after my mother's passing on." I interrupted him.

Weirdly, I was beginning to see a lot of wrong in our society and something was propelling me to change it. Maybe this was the sole reason why I was brought back. To change the old norms.

His lips were slightly parted as he stared at me like I had gone completely mad.

"You need to get checked because I am convinced without a doubt that something or someone must have poisoned your mind." He blatantly said.

"Then that's more reason to let me go from here," I struck a point and watched how he clenched his jaws and fists.

"You are going nowhere. And if that is the only thing you want, then know that you WILL NOT have it." He stated with finality and turned to leave.

"I will have it, Lauren. It is just a matter of time." I made a declaration and instead of him responding to me, he opened the doors and marched out in rage.

Once he was gone, I fell with my back onto my bed and stared at the ceiling as I thought of my next move while patiently waiting for my lawyer to arrive.

The following day….

My eyes were heavy with sleep as I groggily sat upright with a foul mood.

Yesterday I discovered that my lawyer was out of town due to some personal matters and would be back the following week.

"Your bath is ready my queen." Peace informed me while cautiously looking at my appearance in pity.

Last night I tossed and turned repeatedly with a lot of ideas running through my mind coupled with my lawyer's unavailability.

I was a mess right now and I had instructed my ladies in waiting not to ask me any question.

Currently, Peace and Rachel were with me while Dally was sorting out my breakfast.

Dally was in her early 40s while Peace was in her late 30s and Rachel in her late 20s. To make it more interesting, they could clearly be distinguished in looks and appearance.

Dally came from an elite home and had short but rich strawberry blonde hair which stopped at her collar bone with the clearest teal eyes I have ever seen. Peace on the other hand didn't have so much hair and it was pale blonde in color but her skin was flawless since she also came from a well to do home, though they weren't an elite. They were simply wealthy, especially in the farming and business area.

Rachel was from a noble family and her father was my personal lawyer. He is the most sought after in every kingdom because of his impartiality, honesty and justness to the law which is why I preferred him.

Rachel had full curly red hair with vibrant brown and green eyes.

They had such interesting features and here I was, just normal.

I didn't even want to think of how overworldly the lady Lauren brought home.

I still remembered her name.

It was Peculiar

And truly, she lived up by her name. She was immensely peculiar.

She had golden blonde hair I envied and her eyes…. God, they were captivating.

It was rare to find someone with golden blonde hair but to find someone with ice blue eyes is a miracle.

Wait!

What am I evening thinking of right now?

I shook my head as if that would get it out of my mind when I knew that wasn't possible.

When I looked back at Peace with Rachel by her side, frowning at me in worry, I sighed and got out of bed.

As for Lauren….

God, that was another being I couldn't get enough of.

My past self could stare at him for days and still not get satisfied but right now, after everything he made me go through in the hands of that evil witch called Peculiar, I didn't bother with his looks anymore. In fact, it provoked me.

On my way to the washroom, I suddenly stopped when a flash of idea came to my mind.

My ladies in waiting quickly came to me in concern and I slowly looked at them with an evil smirk.

"What is it, my queen?" Rachel curiously inquired.

"I need you to do something for me." I directed my words at her.

"Anything for my queen." She swiftly responded and I smiled in content before saying what I wanted her to do for me.

"I want you to inform Dally I will be having my breakfast in the garden."

"Done. Any other thing?" She dutifully asked.

"Yes…" I said and my smile broke into a sinister grin as I named the second thing which was the sole reason for eating there.

"I will be having my meal with the guest my husband brought back from war. I didn't welcome her properly and I wouldn't want my husband to know for now. Just make it quiet, okay?" I sweetly said like it was for a good purpose when in truth I had other plans in mind.

~{LAUREN'S POV}~

I woke up with a foul mood, thinking of one thing; The fact that Deborah adamantly wanted to get a divorce when she knew it was against the law and considered a crime.

How could she even think of divorcing me?

What have I done to her to deserve that?

I made sure she had her space and gave her all the chances to show her true self as a queen especially when it came to kingdom matters. So why then does she want to get a divorce?

Because of her ridiculous request, I didn't sleep well and now I had a headache as well as a body ache since I hadn't rested properly after I returned.

I had injuries all over my body and a deep cut at my back and stomach and yet she didn't bother to ask how the battle went.

What if I had died? Would she have rejoiced?

Because right now I was beginning to think that she had hated me all along but hid it behind her innocent facade.

I was still very mad at her for the way I was treated on returning.

Instead of making things more comforting, she chose to make it discomforting and extremely wearisome for me. I had overexerted myself during the horse race and in constant raising of my voice and I couldn't even imagine what she would do today.

Hopefully, the day goes well and she repents.

It was at that moment a knock came at my door and I groggily told the person to come in just to realize it was my right hand man, Thomas.

Sighing heavily, I cleaned my face with my right hand and moved to the edge of the bed while groaning in pain because my wounds were still fresh. It had taken every strength in me to stand strong before my queen, Deborah.

I couldn't show weakness, not when she was rebellious and boldly defied me.

When I was seated in a good position, I gestured for him to say what he came to report.

"How are you feeling today, your majesty?" Thomas carefully asked.

"Why do you ask?" I asked back in suspicion.

"Because what I am about to say next will ruin your mood." He truthfully said and I closed my eyes when one person came to mind. Deborah.

"Is this about Deborah?"

"Yes."

"What now?" I groaned in exhaustion.

"She's currently having breakfast with Lady Peculiar."
