After what seemed like an eternity, Winter finally slowed, tires crunching the leaves and soft forest floor. He maneuvered the vehicle deeper until the trees closed in overhead like towering sentinels.
'Around four kilometers from the forest's edge. Quite far.'
Ashrik silently guessed the distance Winter had taken from the moment he drove into the forest. Adding to the distance between the forest with the base, it was clear how wary Deputy Commander Jia was.
Once Winter stopped, Ashrik signaled the other two. Isaac and Felix slid off the roof in perfect silence. They followed their leader by scaling the tall trees in their surroundings.
The trio melted into the eerie darkness of the forest, the combination of invisibility and shadows making them practically nonexistent. Even though no one could see them, they remained cautious.
