Chapter 75 - Where the Noise Fades

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

The heavy sleep had done wonders. When Keifer and I finally emerged from the cottage, the world had shifted. The harsh, punishing glare of the afternoon sun had softened into a deep, honey-gold glow. The sky was a gradient of bruised orange and soft pink, and the air had finally lost its humid bite, replaced by a refreshing salt-laden breeze that made the palm leaves dance.

"Look at them! The legends have returned!" Ci-N's voice carried across the sand.

The entire squad was already down by the shoreline. They weren't dressed for a dinner; they were in swim trunks and light cover-ups, looking loose, energized, and ready for trouble.

"We thought you two were hibernating!" MJ called out, waving a neon-colored volleyball from the water. "Get in here! The tide is coming in and the water is perfect!"

"Ready to face the music?" Keifer asked, his hand momentarily squeezing mine before he let go so we could join the group.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I laughed, feeling a lightheartedness I hadn't felt all day.

The water was waist-deep and crystal clear, shimmering like liquid gold under the setting sun. We waded in, the cool temperature a perfect shock to our system after the heat of the nap.

Immediately, a volleyball came flying toward us. The ocean was the perfect arena—there were no boundaries, no rigid rules, just thirty people splashing and diving as the ball moved in a chaotic arc across the waves.

It was pure, unadulterated energy. Because we were in the water, every jump was slowed by the resistance of the sea, and every spike resulted in a massive explosion of spray that blinded half the players. Aries was in his element, his hair slicked back, leaping out of the water to smash the ball toward David and Felix.

"I'VE GOT IT!" Jay-Jay screamed, lunging for a low ball.

She slipped on the sandy bottom and went under with a massive splash. I didn't even think—I dove after her, my arm catching her under the waist and hoisting her back up. She surfaced sputtering and laughing, wiping salt water from her eyes as the ball was tossed to another part of the group.

"You're a magnet for trouble, Jay," I murmured, my hand lingering on her hip for a second longer than necessary under the surface of the water.

"And you're always there to catch me," she teased, splashing me playfully before swimming off to join Gorya and the girls.

After the volleyball game turned into a giant water fight, the mood shifted. One by one, we started swimming further out toward the horizon, where the water turned a deep, darkening turquoise.

It was a beautiful sight—all of us, Section E, the F4, and the girls, scattered across the ocean like a pod of dolphins. We weren't racing for points or trying to beat each other; we were just moving together, enjoying the freedom of the open water as the stars began to poke through the purple sky.

I could see Thyme and Section E further out, competing to see who could stay underwater the longest, while MJ and Kavin were floating on their backs, chatting and pointing at the constellations.

Keifer was right beside me. He didn't say much, but he stayed close, his powerful strokes matching my rhythm. Every time a larger wave came, he'd shift slightly to break the force of it before it hit me. He was still being my protector, even out here in the middle of the ocean.

"The water feels so good," I breathed, treadling water as I looked at the mansion lights beginning to twinkle on the shore.

"It does," Keifer agreed, his eyes fixed on me. "But I think the girls are starting to head back to the beach. The bonfire is already lit."

--: Keifer's POV: --

As the twilight deepened into a true purple evening, we all began to migrate back toward the shore. The massive bonfire that David and Felix had built was roaring now, sending orange sparks dancing up toward the moon.

I stayed back for a moment in the shallow water, watching Jay-Jay as she walked out of the surf. The salt water had completely washed away the last of Freya's foundation. In the flickering light of the distant fire, the mark on her neck was visible again—a small, dark reminder of what we'd shared in the cottage.

I walked up behind her, my hands resting on her wet shoulders. She leaned back against me, her head resting on my chest, her skin cool from the ocean but her spirit clearly warmed.

"They're all distracted by the food," I murmured into her ear, my voice dropping into that low, gravelly hum. "And the sun is officially gone."

"I know," she whispered, turning in my arms. Her wet hair was clinging to her face, and her eyes were burning with that same intensity I'd seen before our nap. "The three hours are over, Keifer."

"The peace is over," I corrected, my thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "But the night is just beginning. And I believe I still have some 'unfinished business' to attend to once the party dies down."

Jay-Jay smiled—a beautiful, daring look that told me she was done being the innocent one for the day. She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a quick, salt-tasting kiss to my lips.

"Then let's go join the others," she whispered. "Before they come looking for us again."

I laughed, wrapping my arm around her waist as we walked toward the glowing fire, the sound of Section E's laughter and the crackle of the wood filling the air.

The aroma of grilled seafood and roasting marshmallows hit us as we approached the circle of warmth. The bonfire was a masterpiece—a towering cone of driftwood that sent a pillar of golden sparks swirling toward the Milky Way.

"Finally! The stars of the show!" Felix cheered, holding up a skewer of grilled prawns. "Grab a plate before Ci-N eats the entire ocean supply!"

"I'm maintaining my energy for the evening's festivities!" Ci-N retorted, his face smudged with soot and chocolate.

Keifer didn't let go of my waist until we reached the food table. We filled our plates with grilled corn, spicy skewered meat, and fresh tropical fruit. It was the most relaxed I'd seen everyone. There were no pranks, no shouting matches—just the sound of the crackling fire and the rhythmic sigh of the ocean.

We sat on a large piece of driftwood slightly away from the center of the noise. I leaned into Keifer, the heat of the fire on my front and his steady warmth at my back. We ate in a comfortable, hungry silence, watching the squad. Aries was actually laughing at something Ella said, and Thyme was busy trying to figure out how to peel a prawn without getting his hands dirty, much to Kavin's amusement.

"Everything okay?" Keifer asked softly, nudging my shoulder with his.

"Perfect," I whispered, resting my head on his shoulder. "I think this is exactly what we needed."

As the meal wound down, the energy of the group began to shift. Music started playing softly from a portable speaker—something acoustic and low—and the rowdy shouting turned into quiet conversations.

I looked at Jay-Jay. She was watching the fire, the orange light dancing in her dark eyes. She looked peaceful, but I could see the slight weight of the long day in the way her shoulders slumped. The noise of Section E was starting to pick up again as they prepared for a round of "Never Have I Ever," and I knew it was only a matter of time before we were pulled back into the spotlight.

I leaned in, my voice a mere vibration against her temple. "Let's go for a walk."

Jay-Jay looked at me, a soft smile spreading across her lips. "I thought you'd never ask."

We stood up quietly. Fortunately, the group was currently embroiled in a heated debate over who got to choose the first question for the game. We slipped away from the firelight, the orange glow fading behind us as we stepped onto the cool, damp sand of the shoreline.

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

The transition was instant. One moment there was the crackle of fire and the smell of smoke; the next, there was only the vast, silver-dark expanse of the ocean and the cool night air.

Keifer didn't just walk beside me. He wrapped his arm firmly around my shoulders, drawing me into his side. I instinctively wrapped my arm around his waist, leaning my head against his chest as we walked. The sand was cool beneath my feet, and every few seconds, a stray wave would rush up to tickle our toes with its icy foam.

We didn't talk. We didn't need to. The silence was heavy but comfortable, filled with the sound of our synchronized footsteps and the heartbeat I could feel thrumming through Keifer's shirt.

--: Keifer's POV: --

I adjusted my grip on her, pulling her even closer as the wind picked up. The moonlight turned the wet sand into a mirror, reflecting the stars above so that it felt like we were walking on the edge of the universe.

Out here, the pressure of the day vanished. I was just a man walking on a beach with the only person who truly understood the chaos inside my head.

I stopped walking for a moment, turning her toward me. The ocean was at our backs, the dark waves gleaming with bioluminescent blue light as they broke. I looked down at her, seeing the way the moonlight hit the curve of her cheek.

"Peaceful?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"Very," she breathed, her hands resting on my chest. She looked up at me, her eyes clear and full of a quiet, steady love.

I leaned down, resting my forehead against hers. No interruptions. No hidden marks to worry about. No masks to wear. Just the two of us and the endless night.

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

I closed my eyes, listening to the ocean. In this moment, the world felt small—just the size of the space between Keifer and me. I leaned into him, letting the peace of the shoreline wash over me.

We stayed like that for a long time, two shadows against the silver sea, finally finding the quiet we'd been searching for since the sun first rose.
