Chapter 1 - Drawer of Secrets

For six years, Luna believed the man she married was nothing more than a businessman. She knew he owned casinos, knew he moved in wealthy circles, knew he carried himself with authority—but never once did she imagine the truth.

Then one day, in a rush, her husband forgot to lock the drawer he had kept sealed for six years.

The same drawer he never allowed her near.

Curiosity pulled at her. Unease followed. Her heart pounded as she opened it.

Inside were documents—neatly arranged, cold, merciless. Pages detailing drug smuggling routes. Transaction records. Shipment schedules. Names, locations, numbers. Black ink on white paper spelling out crimes she had only ever heard about on the news.

Then she saw another document.

Mafia affiliations.

Her breath caught.

Her fingers trembled as she turned another page.

And there it was.

A final document revealing that her husband—Matteo—was not just part of the Mafia.

He was the head.

The boss of bosses.

The ruler of them all.

The room spun. Her knees weakened. The man who kissed her every morning, who held her when she cried, who told her he loved her—was the most powerful Mafia lord in the world.

She quickly placed the documents back, her chest tight, her mind screaming.

Matteo had hidden it from her. To protect her. Because he loved her.

And now she carried a truth that could get her killed.

The next day, when Matteo returned home, she pretended she knew nothing.

He told her they were visiting the Lorenzo family. The Matteo family would be meeting them for an important discussion. He told her to dress beautifully—because she always was.

She smiled. She played the perfect wife.

But inside, fear curled like a living thing.

She dressed elegantly and descended the grand staircase of their mansion. The house felt larger than ever, colder than ever. Outside, a sleek black limousine waited.

Matteo stood beside it.

When the driver opened the door, Matteo extended his hand to her. She took it, forcing her fingers to stay steady.

The ride was quiet.

Too quiet.

Luna stared out the window as city lights blurred together, her thoughts spiraling back to those documents. The transactions. The laundering. The shipments. The names. The amounts—so large they barely seemed real.

The car turned onto a long private road lined with towering trees.

Then she saw it.

The Lorenzo estate.

Massive. Fortress-like. Walls so high they blocked the sky. Armed guards stationed everywhere. It wasn't just a home—it was a kingdom.

Power lived here.

The limousine stopped.

Matteo stepped out first, then turned toward her, studying her face as he offered his hand again. She took it, her heart racing.

She wanted to ask him. To confront him. To scream.

But she didn't.

Inside, the estate was as breathtaking as it was terrifying. Gold chandeliers glowed overhead. Marble floors reflected wealth and blood money. The air itself felt heavy with power.

Men in suits lined the hall—tall, built, dangerous. Before, she might have thought nothing of it.

Now she saw them for what they were.

Soldiers.

A man approached and guided them into a grand dining hall. A long mahogany table stretched across the room. At its head sat a man Luna recognized instantly.

Lorenzo Dante.

She had seen his face in the files.

His blonde hair was slicked forward, his eyes sharp and calculating as they flicked over her before settling on Matteo.

"I see you brought your beautiful wife," Lorenzo said.

Matteo pulled out a chair for her. "She belongs by my side."

Servants placed lavish meals before them, but Luna couldn't bring herself to eat.

The men spoke in veiled language. Half-truths. Hidden meanings. But Luna understood far more than they realized.

Then Lorenzo placed a folder on the table.

Her breath caught.

It looked exactly like the one in Matteo's drawer.

Lorenzo opened it. "The deal will not fail, Matteo. We know what we're risking."

Matteo lifted his glass slowly. "And we both know—we can't afford to."

Lorenzo leaned back, tightening his fist.

"Then we proceed."

Matteo stood. Checked his watch.

"Let's talk privately, Lorenzo."

Then he turned to Luna.

"Love, I need to handle something at the casino. You know how tense those situations can get."

He kissed her hand.

And walked away with Lorenzo.

If only I could follow them.

If only I could read that file.

But the hall was filled with guards. Eyes everywhere. I must behave. I must be the perfect noble wife.

But what are they planning?

What are they hiding?

And worse…

What am I hiding?

Yesterday, Matteo had said he noticed the drawer was open—that he had closed it himself. That was why she acted normal. Why she kissed him. Why she hugged him. Why she pretended she wasn't terrified of the man she married.

When he said, We're meeting the Lorenzo family tomorrow, her heart had nearly stopped.

The Lorenzo family.

One of the most powerful families in the underworld.

And now she sat at their table.

This wasn't business.

This was blood.

This was war.

And she was married to its king.
