Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - Mission Failed

He studied his opponent, Number 37, with complete seriousness. His opponent's height, arms, and legs were all very long, and his build wasn't bad either. It also looked like he used spiked gloves just like Aka, but unlike Aka, his spikes were on the sides of his hands, not over the knuckles. Apparently, with his long reach and side-spikes, he would punch and then cut his opponent on the way back.

The fight began and 37 approached Aka with slow steps, but Aka did not back away and stepped forward too. However, before Aka could fully close the distance, 37 was already throwing punches with his long arms. Even when Aka dodged the fists just as he expected, the side-spikes on 37's gloves still scratched him as the punches withdrew.

Aka wasn't tired, but 37 had just come from a previous fight and was exhausted. Because of this he wanted to end the fight as quickly as possible, so he was attacking aggressively without restraint. When another punch came in, Aka moved forward instead of dodging back, grabbed his long arm, lifted him onto his back, and slammed him to the ground. Then, without mercy, he punched him until he passed out.

Once 37 was finished, the crowd carried him away, and Number 44 stepped forward in full gear. But unlike before, he approached not with the respect one might show an opponent, but as if he were looking at garbage, even spitting on the ground before the fight began and rushing at Aka. Aka moved toward him as well and pretended he was going to punch, but instead swept his legs. Although 44 didn't fall, he still took an uppercut from Aka and was stunned for a brief moment, which Aka immediately used. He bent one knee, drove his spikes into 44's knees as his signature move, grabbed some dirt from the ground, and threw it into his face before backing away with large steps.

44 looked like he was about to lose for the second time, and this enraged him. He did not want to lose to someone who didn't even respect his opponents. In truth, even if Aka was more tired, 44 was far more injured, and if the fight dragged on he would definitely be at a disadvantage.

Without watching his footing, 44 charged at full speed toward Aka. Aka expected a punch or a kick, but instead 44 jumped and swung a full-power kick at Aka's head. However, Aka caught the leg, grabbed it, slammed him to the ground, and mounted him. Then he punched him until he was sure he had passed out, this time also using the spikes on his gloves.

After defeating this opponent too, he stepped back again and waited for his next challenger. This time, Number 55 came out, someone Aka had only seen a few times before. He looked heavy and strong, though Aka had grown enough that he wasn't that much larger anymore. But the weapon he used was unusual: 55 carried a katana, and it was quite long.

55 calmly waited for Aka to come to him. Aka finally took the first step and moved in, then suddenly accelerated and kicked 55's hand to make him drop the katana. But that didn't happen, and if Aka had been even one second slower the katana would have pierced his body. Still, thanks to the dodge, he was now extremely close to 55, and he didn't waste the opportunity. He charged into 55's stomach, and when he didn't fall, Aka drove his spikes into both sides of his abdomen.

During all this, 55 couldn't do much because the katana was too long, and while Aka was that close, he simply couldn't reach him. If he dropped the katana, he'd be unarmed and at a disadvantage. Seeing that 55 couldn't react properly when he got this close, Aka bent his knees, aiming to stab spikes into 55's legs. But 55 had seen this attack dozens of times and already had a counter prepared.

The moment Aka bent down, 55 shifted slightly back and kicked him with full force. Aka fell forward onto his face, and 55 immediately seized the chance: he slashed the backs of Aka's knees with a sideways cut of his long katana and then drove the blade through Aka's leg into the ground, pinning him. After that, he began kicking Aka with all his strength.

While taking those kicks, Aka made a quick plan. He suddenly flung his body sideways as if he had been knocked away, which made the katana fall to the ground. When he rolled over onto his back, he scooped up some dirt without 55 noticing and waited. At what he judged to be the perfect moment, he caught an incoming kick, and although 55 didn't fall completely, he did drop onto his knees. Aka took the chance to throw the dirt into 55's eyes and then shoved his fingers into them.

While 55 writhed on the ground, Aka grabbed the katana and pinned 55's leg to the floor with it. Then he climbed on top of him and punched him with his spiked fists until he passed out.

Aka had broken his record. He had defeated three people and was still standing in the arena, even if he was close to fainting from the pain and could barely step on the leg that had been pierced by the katana. But he was close to 29's winning streak now — if he won one more fight, he would equal her record, and that alone would make him feel a little better.

As he stood there glancing at his wounds, his new opponent arrived. It was Number 31, who, like 29, used a single dagger. Aka didn't really remember watching him fight before, and his only fight against a single-dagger opponent had gone very badly.

It was obvious from the start that Aka was going to lose. He could barely walk, let alone fight properly, so 31 didn't advance and instead waited cautiously for Aka to come to him. Aka decided to pour everything he had left into a single combo and, limping, rushed forward.

Just as he was about to reach 31, his steps faltered, but he still moved in and swung a punch. 31 easily closed the distance — but what he didn't expect came from below. Even though it felt like his leg was going to shatter, Aka forced it to work properly one last time and kicked 31 in the groin with all his strength. His leg was nearly useless afterward.

31 collapsed from the pain, and Aka dropped to his knees because his leg wouldn't hold him anymore. He grabbed dirt from the ground again and threw it into 31's eyes, finally making him fall onto his back. When Aka tried to drive his fingers into 31's eyes, 31 focused only on protecting them, which left his stomach unguarded — and Aka hammered his abdomen with spiked punches.

But eventually, 31's pain eased enough for him to function again. Even though he was injured and in pain, his wounds were nothing compared to Aka's, and he still had far more strength. He threw Aka off him, and because Aka was already in terrible shape, he couldn't do much more. 31 beat him until he passed out.
