Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Buying a Car [Reupdated]

"This is a General Motors vehicle-the Buick No. 1. Steel body, leather seats, excellent handling. Top speed of fifty miles per hour, with a four-hour range. The price is fourteen thousand five hundred dollars."

The saleswoman winked, carefully gauging their reactions.

If it was too expensive, there was no need to act overly enthusiastic.

Ryden had no intention of flirting with the sexy saleswoman.

In other situations, maybe. But his "official" wife was right beside him. At the very least, he needed to be discreet.

Young man-don't be too arrogant.

"Alright," Ryden said casually. "Just show me the best-looking and most expensive cars."

He turned to Dia.

"Honey, I'm buying you one today. It'll make getting around easier."

Dia covered her mouth.

Even a woman who wasn't materialistic couldn't resist a gesture like that.

A gift worth twenty thousand dollars in this era was basically the equivalent of gifting a house in the twenty-first century.

Her heart raced. Excitement and emotion surged together.

She steadied her breathing and shook her head.

"No, Ryden. This is too expensive. I don't really need it. Don't spend so much money. Save it for yourself."

The saleswoman's eyes lit up instantly.

A big spender.

She couldn't help licking her lips.

A massive commission was flying straight at her.

Her gaze toward Ryden warmed noticeably.

So this young guy liked older women?

Hehe. Maybe she still had a chance.

Ryden patted his backpack.

"It's fine. During holidays, having a car will make going home easier."

"I'll teach you how to drive over the next few days. It's very simple."

He laughed.

"Don't worry about money. Money is made to be spent. If you don't spend it, earning it has no meaning."

"To learn how to make money, you first have to learn how to spend it."

"Pick whichever one you like."

A generous man with money always attracted attention.

After all, money was often far more important than love.

Just look outside-entire blocks full of homeless people begging.

Without money, you couldn't even eat.

Who had time to talk about love?

Dia stopped trying to persuade him.

Instead, she leaned in and gave him a generous kiss.

Then she happily began choosing a car.

Ryden laughed inwardly.

This feeling of flexing was incredible.

No wonder people loved doing it.

Flexing really does make people happy.

The showroom was about three or four hundred square meters.

Seven or eight cars at most.

The styles were nearly identical.

The colors were almost all black, with yellow being the only alternative.

Ryden didn't hesitate.

He glanced over the interiors and basic performance, then decided.

In this era, buying a sports car was impossible-unless he modified it himself.

Which was exactly his plan.

As a poor guy without a system or cheats, he had to rely on himself for everything.

Looks like I need to speed things up.

Mechanics. AI.

Mechanical arms like Tony Stark's-build them as soon as possible.

That alone would save a massive amount of effort.

Most important of all-

An AI butler.

Something like Jarvis or Friday would be perfect.

Of course, what he needed to do right now was simple.

Stop daydreaming.

Focus.

Kid.

Honestly, all the models were about the same.

Dia took a long time to choose.

In the end, she picked the same model as Ryden.

Watching these two blatant fat cats, the saleswoman's eyes practically turned green.

If she weren't worried about the "lady of the house" being present, she might've rushed over and kissed Ryden twice herself.

Two orders meant at least a thousand dollars in commission.

And that was conservative.

When it came time to pay, Ryden helplessly pulled bundles of cash out of his backpack.

One after another.

This primitive method was infuriating.

If he wanted to swipe a card, he'd have to wait until after the war-after computers were invented, and after the internet existed.

In this era, cash was king.

Even major arms deals used checks.

Swiping a card?

Impossible.

Someone swiping your wallet was far more likely.

Thanks to the economic depression of 1938, registration and pickup were lightning fast.

Only about three hours.

After all, nobody was buying cars.

Serving a single customer meant peak efficiency.

Ryden had someone drive one car to the school.

He took Dia out to the outskirts to practice driving.

He wasn't exactly an old hand himself.

He hadn't touched a steering wheel in years, and his license was probably collecting dust.

He'd been worried about a "female driver."

Turns out, his worry was pointless.

Dia's talent was absurd.

After a single explanation and one demonstration, she was starting the engine, shifting gears, and controlling the clutch smoothly within twenty minutes.

She looked like a veteran.

Ryden was stunned.

Was his wife secretly a pro?

The thought felt... strange.

"This is amazing," Dia said, pulling over and turning to him, eyes shining. "It feels wonderful."

"Honey, thank you."

At that moment, she truly gave her heart to Ryden.

A man willing to spend money on her-

He had to love her.

"Haha. That sounded good," Ryden said. "Say it again."

"Don't worry, honey. Once I get my PhD, I'll come back and marry you."

He made up his mind.

He needed to master biology and chemistry.

Only by fully understanding the Super Soldier Serum could he keep the women around him young.

He didn't want to end up like Captain America.

Still young after seventy years-

While the woman he loved had already grown old.

The wind blew.

The car rattled.

The road stretched steadily ahead.

By the time he dropped Dia off at the faculty apartments, Ryden felt like his back was about to break.

His stamina wasn't quite there yet.

He slowly drove the other car home.

One car, naturally, stayed at the school.

For his wife.
