Chapter 105 - Those Who Pay in Gold

Chapter 103 — Those Who Pay in Gold Bleed First

The rain did not fall naturally.

It slid.

As if the sky itself hesitated before letting the water go.

Kairo stood beneath the overhang of Umbra's western dispatch tower, cloak unmoving despite the wind. The black fabric absorbed the dim torchlight instead of reflecting it, turning his silhouette into something unreal—like a tear cut into the world.

Below him, the courtyard bustled with low activity.

Mercenaries.

Umbra's mercenaries.

They did not wear uniforms. That had been Kairo's order. Uniforms invited assumptions—ranks, loyalties, flags. Umbra would not be mistaken for a nation's blade.

Instead, each Operative wore what suited their body and fighting style. Leather reinforced with shadow-thread. Cloaks stitched with null-runes. Weapons unmarked, unadorned.

No colors.

Only function.

Jex approached from behind, boots clicking softly against the stone.

"You're going to catch a cold standing out here," he said.

Kairo didn't turn.

"I won't," he replied.

Jex stopped beside him, resting his forearms on the railing and following Kairo's gaze toward the gates.

Beyond them, a single carriage waited.

Old.

Wooden.

Cracked lacquer barely holding together.

Pulled by one exhausted horse.

Jex frowned. "That's the client?"

"Yes."

"That's not gold-paying nobility."

"No," Kairo agreed. "It's worse."

The gates creaked open.

A boy stumbled inside.

He couldn't have been older than thirteen.

Mud clung to his trousers. His left sleeve was dark with dried blood. He walked with the stiff, uneven gait of someone forcing themselves forward on adrenaline alone.

Two Operatives moved instinctively.

Kairo raised a hand.

They stopped.

The boy took three more steps before collapsing.

"Easy. Easy," Jex muttered, kneeling beside him.

The boy's skin was burning.

Fevered.

His lips trembled as he tried—and failed—to speak.

Jex looked up sharply. "He's been poisoned."

Kairo descended the stairs.

Each step echoed.

By the time he reached the boy, the courtyard had gone silent.

Kairo crouched.

The boy's eyes fluttered open.

Gold coins spilled from his clenched fist, clattering weakly against the stone.

"Please," the boy whispered hoarsely. "I… I brought payment…"

His hand shook as he pushed the coins toward Kairo.

They were old imperial mint. Pure gold. Real value.

Jex sucked in a breath.

"That's enough to hire a small army," he said quietly.

The boy coughed.

Blood speckled the stone.

"They took my sister," he said. "Said… said we owed… protection tax…"

His voice cracked.

"They said Umbra helps people."

Kairo picked up one of the coins.

It was warm.

Still carrying the heat of the boy's body.

"Blessing: Oathbound Coin"

Effect:

– Reveals the intent tied to currency offered willingly

– Strength of revelation proportional to sacrifice

The world shifted.

Not visually.

Emotionally.

Kairo felt the boy's desperation crash into him like a wave.

No lies.

No manipulation.

Only raw, terrified hope.

Kairo closed his fingers around the coin.

"Jex," he said calmly. "Get the healer."

Jex hesitated. "The poison—"

"I know," Kairo said.

He placed two fingers against the boy's chest.

"Blessing: Umbra Assimilation — Minor"

Effect:

– Converts external affliction into shadow-state

– Success dependent on user's authority over shadow

The poison resisted.

It burned.

Aggressive. Refined.

Not common venom.

Kairo's brow furrowed slightly.

"Interesting," he murmured.

The shadow crept.

Wrapped.

Absorbed.

The boy gasped violently, then collapsed back into unconsciousness—breathing shallow but steady.

Jex exhaled. "You stabilized him."

"For now."

Kairo stood.

"Find out who took the sister."

One of the Operatives stepped forward. "Already did."

Kairo turned.

The Operative—female, scar across her cheek, voice flat—continued.

"Border syndicate. Calls itself the Red Barrow Collective. Operates three villages over. Known for slave routes disguised as debt enforcement."

Jex swore under his breath. "They're under noble protection."

Kairo looked at him.

"Yes," Jex corrected himself. "They were."

They did not ride.

They walked.

Umbra mercenaries did not announce themselves with banners or hooves. They moved through shadowed paths, forest lines, abandoned roads that maps pretended didn't exist.

The village appeared just before dawn.

Smoke curled lazily from chimneys.

Guards laughed by the gate.

Careless.

Confident.

They didn't see Umbra until the first man fell.

No scream.

Just a wet sound and a body folding inward.

The second guard turned—

—and found a blade already inside his throat.

The gate opened silently.

Inside, lanterns flickered.

A man stepped out of a building, frowning.

"What's the commotion—"

He stopped.

Kairo stood before him.

The man blinked. "Who the hell—"

"Blessing: Shadow Severance"

Effect:

– Disconnects target's shadow from physical body

– Causes paralysis and sensory disorientation

The man collapsed, eyes wide, mouth moving soundlessly.

Kairo didn't slow.

Inside the central hall, voices echoed.

Laughter.

Coins clinking.

A woman screamed—cut short.

Kairo stepped through the doorway.

Conversation died instantly.

Men reached for weapons.

Too slow.

The room darkened.

Shadows stretched unnaturally along the walls.

"Who are—"

"Blessing: Umbra Dominion"

Effect:

– Establishes temporary sovereign authority within a defined space

– All shadows within area respond exclusively to user

The first man was lifted into the air by his own shadow and slammed into the ceiling.

The second tried to run.

His legs refused.

A third charged, roaring.

Kairo met him halfway.

One punch.

Not empowered.

Not dramatic.

Just precise.

Bone shattered.

The man crumpled.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Terrified.

Kairo's gaze swept the room.

"Where is the girl?" he asked calmly.

No one answered.

He sighed.

"Blessing: Truth Extraction — Gaze"

A man sobbed instantly.

"Basement!" he screamed. "Please—please—I didn't touch her!"

Kairo turned away.

Two Operatives descended the stairs.

Screaming followed.

Then silence.

They found her alive.

Bruised.

Shaking.

Wrapped in chains inscribed with suppression runes.

The Operative snapped the chains effortlessly.

The girl flinched at first—

Then froze.

"You're… Umbra," she whispered.

"Yes," the Operative replied.

The girl's eyes filled with tears.

"My brother—"

"He's alive," the Operative said. "Because he paid."

They burned the hall.

Not the village.

Just the symbol.

By morning, the Red Barrow Collective no longer existed.

Kairo stood at the edge of the flames, coat untouched by heat.

Jex approached.

"That noble won't be happy."

Kairo nodded. "Good."

Jex hesitated. "This will spread."

"Yes."

"That Umbra answers gold."

Kairo turned.

"No," he corrected. "Umbra answers intent."

He looked back at the fire.

"And those who use gold to buy silence… bleed first."

Far away.

Beyond atmosphere.

Beyond sky.

A watcher adjusted a lens.

"Confirmed," the voice said softly. "Subject demonstrates controlled sovereign-class blessing use at juvenile age."

Another voice replied, amused.

"And still refuses overt domination."

"Interesting," the first said. "Prepare observation tier escalation."

Back in Umbra territory, the boy woke.

His sister was beside him.

Alive.

Crying.

He clutched her tightly.

Outside the room, Jex leaned against the wall.

"You're setting precedent," he said quietly.

Kairo stood beside him.

"Yes."

Jex glanced at him. "You look calm."

"I am."

"You just dismantled a noble-backed syndicate."

Kairo met his eyes.

"They dismantled themselves," he said. "I just removed the shadow they were hiding in."

Jex laughed softly.

"You're terrifying, you know that?"

Kairo's reflection stared back from the window.

Handsome.

Young.

Too young.

"I know," he said quietly.

"And I'm still not ruling."
