Chapter 57 - Letting Go Without Vanishing

Recalibration didn't feel like relief.

It felt like standing in a room I'd rearranged myself—familiar walls, unfamiliar spacing. Everything is still there, just not pressing in the same way.

When I returned fully, no one rushed me.

That unsettled me more than resistance ever had.

Meetings continued without my presence. Decisions moved forward without my approval. Messages came marked FYI instead of URGENT.

The framework didn't orbit me anymore.

It moved.

"That's good," I told myself.

It still felt strange.

At the hospital, I slipped back into rhythm easily—hands remembering what the mind had been too crowded to hold. The OR didn't ask for ideology. It asked for precision, timing, trust.

I missed that simplicity.

But even here, things had shifted.

A senior resident deferred to me instinctively, then caught herself and corrected the course. "I mean—what do you think?" she asked.

I met her eyes. "What do you think?"

She hesitated. Then answered.
