Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Near escape

The doctors and operating nurses started to adjust the lights on the soldier's wounds.

Amara , the young woman stopped near the operating bed and started to undone the blood soaked military shirt. Her gloved fingers brushed hastily over the wrm blood soaked cloth. Her focus was completely on her work as she carefully undone each button, her fingers worked with practiced ease as she had done it many times. Her eyes glowed under the lights as concern flased through them.

"Volker"Amara whispered to herself in a low voice almost a silent murmur as she read the label on the shirt .

Soon the shirt was undone fully and now it hung loosely at both sides of the young soldier. His abs glimed under the pale lights, his chest rose and fell slowly as if each breathe was a thin thread holding his life. There were marks of cut on his abs and collarbones. His skin looked pale and dry under the lights. His brod sholder had torn clothes wrapped around them. His body looked as hard work and practice of years .

Amara lifted his right hand and slided the shleeves of shirt out of his hand. His hand was decorated with veins popping out of his skin and biceps. Amara then lifted his left hands which was badly wounded , a bullet had been shot there.

And now at last the shirt was removed the wounded stomach and left hand were still bleeding. There were cut marks on his biceps and chest , not bleeding nor too deep but still there sharp and fresh. Small burnt marks on forearm were still red.

"Oh! god" Amara murmured to herself after taking in the sight of the badly wounded soldier.

"He seems more than injured" The doctor said as he stood beside Amara. Worry was written all over his face his wrinkled eyes we're knit in concern.

"Give me scissor and bring cotton pads" The older doctor ordered the nurse.

"Here it is " A male operating nurse said while offering him the mentioned items.

"Check his heart beat" Ordered the doctor, his voice was unmistakably calm as if he was not operating someone.

"His heart beat is weaker and slower" Answered one of the female nurse who had earlier checked the soldier's heart beat .

"His body seems weaker and his breathes are ragged and slower" Another male nurse replied who has been checking the soldier's pulse and his breathes.

"Connect his veins to IV drips" the doctor said while holding the scissor in his hand. "We will be needing surgical probe for it, the would are very serious and though should be streached with care" Amara whispered who has been standing beside the doctor till now observing his work.

"Yeah bring them" the doctor said as Amara brought them and handed them to the doctor.

The clinking of metal tools against metal trays was too loud in the room as footsteps kept moving.

Some operating nurses were doing works like maintaining the IV drips, controlling the bleeding of wounds and healing the small cuts and wounds, adjusting the operating lights while some of them stood beside the doctor handing him the items he demanded or doing what he said.

The soldier laid unconscious on the operating bed due to the syringe of unconsciousness he was given.

Soon the bullets were removed from the stomach and left hand of the soldier and were being placed on the metallic trays without urgency and with outmost care by the hands ahich wore white gloves.

The doctor and operators had blood patches on there operating dresses by now. The bullets now laid on the metallic tray covered in blood , fresh and deep red.

Outside the operating room the wind swayed gently with the smell of blood mixed in it. The lights hanging from the ceiling provided enough brightness to cut the darkness.

As the man still sat on the bench, unmoving and silent, except that now his posture was straight, back sticked to the chair, head thrown back.

He was not crying anymore, no tears were falling anymore they had stopped who knew when. His cheeks were damp now eyes red due to crying, but tears still prickled at the corner of his eyes. His lips treambled and opened slightly as he hugged out a breath.

He looked almost human, with emotions flashing through his eyes. He looked like a human who was at peace finally from the outside but inside him a battle was going on.

He brought his hands to his face and covered his face with his hands in grief, guilt or maybe something more dangerous.

Meanwhile back in the operation room nurses moved, metal clinked, IV drips dripped andnurses and doctors moved and whispered to eachother while the man outside the room whispered and murmured the words of prayer. He tried to sleep, to escape from the reality but sleep was nowhere near him . Exhaustion pressed on him but sleep did never came, he stayed awake, eyes hallow and red, lips treambling and cheeks damp and somehow still clinging to the hope that everything will be fine.

Almost after hours, 6 or 7 maybe;the door of the operation theatre opened, doctor and the nurses stepped out of the room. And as they did the man who had been till now seated on the bench stood hurriedly almost jumping that bench creaked due to it.

"How is he? Is he alive? Is he fine? " He showered the doctor with question as he stood in front of him. His eyes were tired, dark circles under them but still behind them the fear sat unwelcomed but he never showed it.

The doctor noticed the way the man hands treambled , his posture shook but still he choosed to stand like a warrior who had gone through many but never complained.

"He is fine" the doctor said with a warm smile on his face"and also we will be shifting him to another ward in next hour " he added as he placed a hand on the soldier shoulder.

"When can I meet him?" the soldier asked his , he sounded relieved or maybe even happy too. His eyes which were tired seemed to lit at the doctor words.

"After he will shifted to another ward Mr" the doctor said raising his brow at last word.

"Bernhard, my name is Bernhard" the man said.

"So Mr. Bernhard you can meet him in next hours" the doctor said .

"Thank you so much doctor " Bernhard said as his hallow eyes now looked brighten.

"It's our duty" the doctor answered "So I would be leaving now ,if you please" the doctor asked with a gentle smile tugging at his lips.

"Oh yeah, of course" Bernhard replied. He stood aside as the doctors passed by him. And when the footsteps almost faded he slammed back into the chair but this time with a relief, with his eyes shining.

"Finally he is fine" he thought as he closed his eyes.
