Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: When the Crowd Sees You‎

That evening, after Liam dropped Aria off, the city felt quieter than usual.

‎Not empty just softened.

‎Aria stood for a moment behind her apartment door after it closed, her back resting against the cool wood, her fingers still curled as if they were holding onto something that had already slipped away. The faint scent of Liam's cologne lingered in the air, subtle but unmistakable, and it made her chest tighten in a way she didn't entirely understand.

‎She wasn't overwhelmed.

‎She wasn't dizzy with love.

‎But she wasn't untouched either.

‎She kicked off her shoes, set her bag down carefully, and walked through the apartment, switching on lights one by one. Everything looked the same the couch, the small dining table, the framed photos she hadn't changed in months but she felt different inside it.

‎In the bathroom, she turned on the shower and stepped under the warm water, closing her eyes as it ran down her shoulders. The heat loosened the tension in her body, but her mind stayed alert, replaying moments she hadn't meant to memorize.

‎The way Liam had looked at her before the kiss.

‎The way he hadn't rushed.

‎The way his arms had held her without claiming her.

‎She pressed her palms against the tiled wall and exhaled slowly.

‎Be careful, she reminded herself.

‎She had learned that lesson before. She didn't forget it easily.

‎After drying off, Aria slipped into a loose sleep shirt and climbed into bed. She didn't scroll endlessly on her phone. She didn't overthink. She let herself rest.

‎And for the first time in a while, sleep came easily.

‎Morning arrived gently.

‎Sunlight filtered through the curtains, brushing across her face like a quiet invitation to wake up. Aria stirred, stretched, and sat up slowly, her thoughts clearer than they'd been in days.

‎She showered again, this time quickly, efficiently, her movements calm. Afterward, she stood in front of her closet longer than usual, her fingers trailing over fabric as she considered how she wanted to feel today.

‎Not hidden.

‎Not loud.

‎Seen but on her own terms.

‎She chose a short pink dress, soft but fitted, the kind that moved when she walked and rested confidently against her curves without trying too hard. It wasn't dramatic. It didn't scream for attention.

‎But it didn't apologize either.

‎She paired it with simple shoes, light makeup, and let her hair fall naturally. When she looked at her reflection, she paused.

‎She looked… good.

‎Not just attractive grounded.

‎She ate lightly, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

‎The school campus buzzed with energy the moment she arrived.

‎There were banners hung across the gym entrance. Students clustered in groups, voices louder than usual, laughter sharper, anticipation thick in the air.

‎Basketball match day.

‎Aria noticed the shift immediately. The way people glanced at her more openly now. No longer just whispers behind hands but curiosity that didn't bother hiding.

‎She ignored it.

‎She walked through the halls with steady steps, aware of herself but not shrinking.

‎During second period, she felt it before she saw it.

‎Liam.

‎He stood near the doorway, talking to a teammate, his posture relaxed but alert. When his eyes found her, something changed subtle, but unmistakable.

‎His gaze lingered.

‎He smiled.

‎Not the charming one he used for crowds. The real one.

‎Aria felt the familiar pull but she didn't rush toward him. She didn't wave dramatically.

‎She held his gaze for a moment.

‎Then she looked away and continued walking.

‎At lunch, the stands near the court filled quickly. Music played through speakers. Students painted their faces, waving school colors, shouting predictions and rivalries.

‎Aria sat with a few classmates, listening more than she spoke. Chloe sat across the court with others, her posture stiff, her expression unreadable. She glanced toward Aria once only once before looking away.

‎Disappointment flickered across her face.

‎Gone just as quickly.

‎When the game started, the gym erupted.

‎The energy was electric sneakers squeaking against polished floors, the echo of the ball, the roar of the crowd with every score. Aria watched intently, her eyes tracking Liam without trying to.

‎He played like someone fully present.

‎Focused. Controlled. Confident.

‎Each time he scored, the crowd exploded. Each time he glanced toward the stands, his eyes searched until they found her.

‎By the final quarter, the tension was unbearable.

‎Scores were tight. Shouts bounced off the walls. Aria's fingers curled against her knees without her realizing it.

‎Then

‎A clean pass.

‎A sharp turn.

‎A shot that landed perfectly.

‎The buzzer sounded.

‎Liam's team won.

‎The gym erupted.

‎Students jumped to their feet, screaming, cheering, stomping. Teammates collided in celebration, laughter and adrenaline everywhere.

‎Aria stood too, smiling despite herself.

‎She didn't expect what happened next.

‎Liam broke away from his teammates, ignoring the noise, the cameras, the shouting. His eyes locked onto hers across the court.

‎And he walked straight toward her.

‎Her breath caught.

‎People noticed immediately. The cheers shifted, grew louder, more excited. Phones came out. Whispers turned into shouts.

‎Liam stopped in front of her.

‎For a moment, everything slowed.

‎Then he leaned down and kissed her.

‎Not quick.

‎Not hidden.

‎A full, deliberate kiss confident and unafraid.

‎The crowd lost it.

‎Cheers erupted. Whistles. Applause. Someone shouted his name. Someone else shouted hers.

‎Aria froze for half a second then responded.

‎Her hand lifted instinctively, resting against his chest, grounding herself as the moment washed over her.

‎When he pulled back, his forehead touched hers briefly.

‎"You okay?" he murmured, low enough only she could hear.

‎She nodded. "Yeah."

‎The cheers continued, louder than before.

‎Aria was suddenly aware of everything.

‎The attention.

‎The narrative forming in real time.

‎The way this moment would be replayed, retold, exaggerated.

‎Liam took her hand.

‎Not possessively.

‎Openly.

‎She let him.

‎They stood there together as the noise surged around them, a visible we whether she was ready for it or not.

‎Across the gym, Chloe watched.

‎Her lips pressed together. Her eyes flicked away quickly but the disappointment was clear. Not anger. Not jealousy in its loud form.

‎Loss.

‎Aria noticed.

‎She didn't look away.

‎As the celebration continued, Aria felt a strange mix of warmth and caution settle in her chest. The kiss had felt good real. But she knew something important had shifted.

‎This wasn't private anymore.

‎This wasn't just between them.

‎And Liam still holding her hand seemed proud.

‎That, more than anything else, made her pause.

‎The day wasn't over.

‎Not even close.

‎And somewhere beneath the cheers, beneath the thrill, Aria felt the quiet beginning of a question forming one she wasn't ready to ask out loud yet.
