Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The One Julian Warned Me About

The day Liam Hart entered Aria's world, it didn't feel dramatic.

There was no music swelling in the background. No sudden sense of fate cracking open the sky. No instinctive pull that made her heart race.

It felt… ordinary.

And that was what made it dangerous.

Aria walked across campus beside Chloe, her tote bag heavy on one shoulder, the late-morning sun warm against her skin. The semester had settled into a rhythm she likedbbusy, demanding, but manageable. She felt grounded lately. Steady.

Happy, even.

"I'm serious," Chloe said, sipping her iced coffee. "If Professor Langley gives us one more surprise quiz, I'm transferring faculties or starting a podcast. I need peace."

Aria laughed. "You hate consistency too much to commit to a podcast."

"That's rude," Chloe replied. "I'd thrive on chaos."

They rounded the corner near the science block, still bickering playfully, when Aria felt it.

That subtle shift in the air.

That sensation of awareness crawling up her spine.

Her steps slowed not consciously. Just instinct.

Her gaze lifted.

And that was when she saw him.

He stood near the steps of the adjacent building, leaning casually against the railing like he belonged there. Tall. Broad-shouldered without being bulky. Long limbs, relaxed posture. The kind of physique that came from movement, not vanity.

A basketball player.

She knew that without knowing how.

His presence was quiet but unmistakable, like the pause before something happens. His skin was smooth, his jaw sharp, his hair slightly disheveled in a way that looked effortless rather than styled.

And his eyes

They were on her.

Not staring rudely. Not scanning.

Watching.

As if he'd been waiting for her to look up.

Aria's heart skipped not in attraction, but in confusion.

I've never seen him before, she thought.

His gaze wasn't aggressive. There was no hunger in it. No obvious flirtation. If anything, it carried intent. Like he knew something she didn't.

She broke eye contact first.

"Chloe," Aria said lightly, forcing herself back into the conversation, "weren't you just threatening to quit school?"

Chloe blinked. "Wow. You checked out completely."

Aria smiled faintly. "Sorry."

Chloe followed her gaze instinctively, eyes narrowing slightly. "Who's that?"

Aria shrugged. "No idea."

She didn't look back.

But she felt him there.

Still watching.

The feeling followed her into class.

She focused really focused. Took notes. Asked questions. Grounded herself in routine. That was who she was now. Disciplined. Intentional. Secure.

Still… when the lecture ended, the image lingered.

The calm confidence. The stillness.

The way his eyes hadn't rushed her.

Later that afternoon, Aria headed to the library. The space was quiet in that heavy, thoughtful way she liked. She moved through the aisles slowly, scanning spines, stacking books against her chest.

She turned too quickly.

Her foot caught the edge of a low step.

The world tilted

But she didn't fall.

Strong hands caught her mid-stumble. One steadying her arm. The other bracing her waist with instinctive precision.

Aria sucked in a sharp breath.

She looked up.

It was him.

Up close, he was even more striking not in a flashy way, but in a composed, deliberate one. His eyes were dark and observant, curious without being intrusive.

She stepped back immediately, gently pushing against his chest not enough to unbalance him.

"Thank you," she said quickly, regaining her composure.

"You're welcome," he replied.

His voice was calm. Deep. Controlled.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't playful.

It wasn't arrogant.

It was warm in a way that felt unsettling like sincerity could be a weapon if used carelessly.

Her heart betrayed her, skipping once.

Not because she wanted it to.

Because it didn't ask permission.

"I'm Liam," he said. "Liam Hart."

The name settled strangely in her chest.

She nodded politely. "Nice to meet you."

He tilted his head slightly, studying her face like he was memorizing it.

"What's your name?" he asked.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

"Aria."

A slow smile spread across his face. "I thought so."

Her brows furrowed. "You… thought so?"

"I've seen you around," he said easily. "Hard to miss."

Something about the way he said it made her straighten.

"I should go," she said.

"I'll see you again," Liam replied.

Not a question.

A statement.

Then he turned and walked away, disappearing between shelves, leaving silence behind him like an echo.

Aria stood there longer than she meant to.

That was strange, she thought.

Not exciting.

Not thrilling.

Just… unfinished.

Julian was waiting for her outside the café off campus that evening.

The moment she saw him, the unease faded.

He looked the same familiar, grounding, steady. The way his expression softened when he saw her reminded her exactly where she belonged.

"You okay?" he asked, noticing the quiet.

"Yeah," she replied. Then hesitated. "I met someone today."

Julian glanced at her. "Someone?"

She told him everything.

The look. The library. The name.

Julian listened quietly, jaw tightening just a fraction.

"Liam Hart?" he repeated.

She nodded. "You know him?"

Julian exhaled slowly. "Basketball team. He's… popular."

That pause mattered.

"And?" she pressed gently.

"And he's not exactly good news," Julian said carefully. "He doesn't always play fair."

Aria frowned. "He didn't do anything wrong."

"I'm not saying he did," Julian replied quickly. "I just—be careful. Some people don't show their intentions upfront."

She studied Julian's face. There was no jealousy there. No accusation.

Just concern.

"I will," she said. "It didn't feel wrong. Just unexpected."

Julian nodded, reaching for her hand. "I trust you. I just want you aware."

She squeezed his fingers. "Always."

That night, lying in bed, Aria stared at the ceiling longer than usual.

Her thoughts drifted back unwanted to dark eyes and a calm confidence that hadn't tried to impress her.

She didn't understand why it lingered.

She didn't want it to.

And that unsettled her more than attraction ever could.

She didn't know it yet.

But some encounters didn't arrive to steal love.

They arrived to test it.

And some warnings

Came before the damage, not after.
