Chapter 82 – Dinosaurs Meet the Jokester

The next afternoon, in a modest-sized but packed lecture hall at New York University, the air carried that familiar post-lunch drowsiness that every college student knows too well.

Ross stood behind the podium, a map of ancient continental drift projected on the screen behind him.

He was explaining how the separation of tectonic plates influenced biological evolution. Though still visibly nervous, his voice no longer sounded like he was reading from a phone book. As he described populations isolated by newly formed oceans and how they embarked on wildly different evolutionary paths in their separate environments, he tried to inject that "epic narrative" tone Bruce had suggested.

Just as he attempted to outline the survival challenges a key species faced amid catastrophic environmental changes, a familiar voice rang out from the back of the otherwise quiet classroom.

"So, Dr. Geller," Chandler raised his hand with the expression of someone desperately trying to look serious but failing miserably, his voice cutting clearly through the air, "according to your fascinating analysis here, if a small sauropod dinosaur originally living on Gondwana accidentally caught the last continental drift 'ferry' and ended up on Laurasia, how long would it take to adapt to the new continent's completely different food options? Would it need to file for some kind of intercontinental survival permit with the Mesozoic Department of Immigration?"

"Pfft—"

"Hahaha!"

After a brief moment of stunned silence, scattered giggles erupted that couldn't be contained; then, like a dam breaking, the entire room exploded with laughter. Students doubled over in their seats, the previously stagnant atmosphere suddenly crackling with energy.

As the laughter peaked, Chandler looked genuinely confused and leaned toward Bruce sitting beside him. "I wasn't even trying to be funny. Are college kids really this easy?"

At the podium, the completely unexpected "academic question" left Ross momentarily speechless; then he spotted Bruce, seated next to Chandler, giving him an urgent but encouraging nod, his eyes practically screaming, "Go with it! Loosen up!"

Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Grace, Suzanne, and Julie—his entire support squad—were all silently radiating encouragement through their smiles and enthusiastic expressions.

Rachel had indeed shown up but had deliberately chosen a seat as far from Julie as physically possible, a tactical decision everyone pretended not to notice.

The wave of laughter and those supportive faces worked like magic on Ross's frayed nerves. He took a deep breath, and a self-deprecating, inspired smile appeared on his face.

"Well, Chandler," Ross cleared his throat, attempting to sound both academically credible and entertaining,

"considering the massive size difference and extreme adaptive pressures involved, I'd say a 'survival permit' would definitely be above this dinosaur's bureaucratic capabilities. Its real challenges would be... uh... identifying which of the completely unfamiliar plants were actually edible versus poisonous, and avoiding the local predators who'd see it as exotic take-out. That adaptation process would probably take several generations of trial-and-error—and honestly, a lot of evolutionary luck."

From that moment on, the entire atmosphere transformed. Ross was still no stand-up comedian, but he actively worked to translate those distant prehistoric facts into more accessible language, connecting them with those tentative storytelling threads Bruce had suggested.

Genuine laughter and spontaneous questions replaced the earlier glazed-over stares; Ross's face grew more animated, sweat still beading on his forehead, but now from enthusiastic engagement rather than paralyzing dread.

When the lecture finally ended to applause that was far warmer and more sustained than anyone expected, Ross released a long, silent exhale, feeling like he'd just survived—and actually won—a grueling battle.

He glanced toward the middle rows where his friends sat: Bruce was leading the applause, grinning broadly, his eyes radiating an unmistakable "You absolutely nailed it!"

Chandler, meanwhile, shot him two exaggerated thumbs-up and mouthed silently with maximum smugness, "See? Told you I'd save the day!"
