The Hearthome Gym didn't look like a place of sportsmanship; it looked like a set from a classic horror movie. A massive stone mansion loomed over the street, with a giant, inflatable Drifblim floating atop the roof, its yellow "X" eyes staring down at the passersby with eerie cheerfulness.
I took a deep breath, adjusting my backpack. "Alright, everyone. This is it. Two days of training, one legendary grooming session, and a lot of spicy sausages. Let's get that Relic Badge."
I stepped through the heavy oak doors. The interior was dim, lit by flickering purple sconces that gave the hallway a "haunted manor" vibe. I walked up to the reception desk, where a young man in a dark suit was tapping away at a laptop.
"Hi. Julian from Sandgem Town. I have an appointment for a Gym Match today," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
The apprentice checked his screen. "Ah, the Fairy-type specialist. Yes, Julian. Lady Fantina is expecting you. Please, wait in the preparation area."
I sat on a velvet-lined bench, my heart drumming a rhythmic beat against my ribs. I could hear the faint sound of pipe organ music echoing from the main hall. A few minutes later, the apprentice returned and beckoned me forward.
"The stage is set," he said with a dramatic bow. "Good luck, Challenger."
I stepped onto the battlefield, and for a moment, I thought I'd walked into a theater. The floor was a polished, dark marble, and the overhead lights were focused on the center of the arena like spotlights.
A man in a crisp white tuxedo—the referee—stood at the sidelines. He raised a hand and announced in a thick, French-influenced accent: "Mesdames et Messieurs! The challenger has arrived!"
"Now, please welcome the soul of Hearthome! The enchanting, the passionate, the star of the stage! Lady Fantina!"
The heavy blue-and-gold doors at the far end of the arena swung open. Under a shower of glittering confetti, a woman emerged. She wore a voluminous purple ballgown that billowed around her like a cloud of smoke. Her hair was styled into four distinct loops that reminded me—ironically—of Floette's ears. She didn't walk; she danced, spinning gracefully toward her podium.
"Welcome, welcome to my Hearthome Gym!" Fantina cried, her voice melodic and high-pitched. "I rushed back from the Contest Hall the moment I heard a fellow Coordinator was at my door! Dr. Julian, non?"
"I'm honored you made the time, Lady Fantina," I replied with a respectful nod, already fingering the Poké Ball on my belt.
"Ooh, such spirit!" Fantina struck a pose, her hand against her cheek. "I have heard of your magnificent Fairy-style. It is said your battles are like a delicate waltz! I wish to see this for myself before I hand over my precious Relic Badge!"
The referee stepped forward, his flag raised. "This will be a three-on-three Gym Match! The battle ends when all Pokémon on one side are unable to battle. Only the challenger may substitute Pokémon. Let the performance begin!"
"Then, my first dancer takes the stage!" Fantina twirled, throwing her Poké Ball with a flourish. "Drifloon, mon ami, go!"
A purple, balloon-like Pokémon emerged. It had a tuft of white fluff on its head and two long, thin strings ending in yellow hearts. It bobbed in the air, looking deceptively harmless.
"This little one is a fresh hatchling," Fantina explained with a wink. "Her first big stage. Show us your debut!"
I looked at the Drifloon. It was small, but its movements were fluid—typical of a Pokémon raised by a Top Coordinator. "If it's a debut you want, then I have the perfect partner. Togepi, let's show them what we've practiced!"
I tossed the ball, and Togepi popped out in a burst of white light. "Togepi-priii! (Leave it to me, Mama!)" He immediately struck a pose, using a subtle Charm to make his eyes sparkle.
"Magnificent!" Fantina clapped. "An entrance worthy of a Ribbon! But in a Gym, beauty must be backed by bite! Drifloon, Ominous Wind!"
Drifloon began to spin like a top. The purple wind shadows condensed around its stringy arms, turning them into glowing, spectral whips. It lunged forward, closing the distance with surprising speed.
I waited. I didn't give an order. I watched Drifloon get closer... closer...
"Now, Togepi! Take the hit and use Thunder Wave!"
"Drifloon, non! Drift away!" Fantina shouted.
But it was too late. Drifloon's spectral arms slammed into Togepi's eggshell. At the moment of impact, Togepi let out a squeal, and a web of yellow electricity exploded from his body, crawling up Drifloon's strings.
"Wah!" The balloon Pokémon recoiled, sparks dancing across its purple skin. Its movements became jerky and staggered.
"The speed is locked!" I cheered.
Togepi tumbled backward, skidding across the marble. For a second, a faint, metallic glow shimmered around his shell.
"What is that?" Fantina's eyes narrowed. "An Eviolite?"
"Exactly," I said, adjusting my hat. "Most trainers forget that challengers are allowed held items. With the Eviolite, Togepi's defense is high enough to tank that Ominous Wind. Now, your Drifloon is paralyzed."
Fantina laughed, a rich, musical sound. "Skillfully done! You use the rules as your choreography. But the dance is not over! Drifloon, Hypnosis!"
Drifloon's "X" marking began to glow with a rhythmic, pulsating yellow light. Instead of a standard gaze-based move, Drifloon released a physical "X" of energy that drifted toward Togepi in a slow, zig-zagging pattern.
"That's a Coordinator's Hypnosis," I muttered. "Harder to dodge. Togepi, counter with Attract, then Sweet Kiss!"
Togepi began to dance, emitting a soft blue aura. As the hypnotic "X" approached, it seemed to get "distracted" by Togepi's charm, its trajectory faltering. Seizing the opening, Togepi blew a pink, glowing kiss. The heart-shaped energy collided with the Hypnosis, and both exploded into a shower of harmless pink sparks.
"Using Attract to disrupt the flow... you truly are a Coordinator!" Fantina exuded excitement. "But can you handle this? Drifloon, Psychic!"
Drifloon began to glow with blue mental energy, but halfway through the charge, a massive spark of yellow electricity jolted through its body. The paralysis triggered!
"Now! Seize it!" I shouted. "Togepi, Sweet Kiss again!"
Togepi blew another kiss, and this time, it hit Drifloon dead-center. A ring of tiny, chirping Pidgey appeared around Drifloon's head. It was confused.
"Togepi, great job. Take a rest!" I recalled him in a flash of red light. I needed to capitalize on this window of opportunity. "Sylveon, the stage is yours!"
Sylveon landed on the field with a graceful twirl of her ribbons. "Fly-ah! (My turn to shine!)"
"Immediately into Calm Mind!" I ordered.
Sylveon sat back, her eyes closing as a serene aura surrounded her. She was boosting her Special Attack and Special Defense while the opponent was incapacitated.
"Drifloon, interrupt her! Ominous Wind!" Fantina urged.
Drifloon spun around, but in its confusion, it completely misjudged the direction. It unleashed a blast of purple wind that hit the floor ten feet to Sylveon's left, kicking up a cloud of dust.
"Again!" Fantina cried, her voice rising in desperation.
Drifloon tried again, but the paralysis seized its muscles, and it simply bobbed in place, helpless. By the time it shook off the paralysis, Sylveon had finished her second Calm Mind. She looked like she was glowing with moonlight.
"That's enough," I said, my voice calm. "Sylveon, finish this. Fairy Wind!"
Sylveon opened her eyes, and with a powerful flick of her ribbons, she summoned a pink cyclone. The wind swept across the arena, catching the confused and paralyzed Drifloon and slamming it into the back wall.
The balloon Pokémon slid to the floor, its strings limp.
The referee raised his flag. "Drifloon is unable to battle! Sylveon wins!"
