Chapter Two
The morning sun barely pierced the storm clouds, yet the ocean roared as if alive with fury. Black sails tore across the waves, pursuing a prize they could neither see nor truly understand. Aurelya stood at the prow of her coral ship, the trident in her hands humming with energy, resonating with the heartbeat of the sea itself. Beside her, Kaelthar coiled, wings flexing, muscles tensing like a drawn bow.
"They are faster than I anticipated," Aurelya said, eyes scanning the horizon. "Thrynn does not come as a single storm. He brings fire, shadow... and cunning."
Kaelthar's molten-gold eyes glinted. "Cunning, yes... but ambition is a blind tide. One wave, one strike, and it will crash upon itself."
Suddenly, a bolt of black lightning shot from the lead ship, striking the water mere feet from Aurelya's vessel. Steam hissed as the sea boiled, the air thick with acrid smoke and magical energy. Thrynn's voice carried across the chaos, sharp and commanding.
"You cannot hide behind your dragon, goddess!" he yelled. "The Skull calls to me! I can hear its whispers... it will be mine!"
Aurelya's lips curved into a smile tinged with both fury and defiance. "The Skull does not belong to the greedy," she called back. "It will never be yours, warlord. And your whispers? They are nothing but lies."
Kaelthar roared, a sound that split the storm clouds. He launched himself into the sky, wings cutting the wind, and descended upon Thrynn's fleet. Ships splintered under his claws, splashing into the ocean with explosive fury. Fire met water in a chaotic dance, scorching planks hissing as waves swallowed them whole.
But Thrynn had anticipated this. From his staff, he conjured a shield of shadow, twisting the waves into jagged walls that deflected Kaelthar's attack. The warlord's laughter echoed over the churning sea, a sound that sent a shiver down even Aurelya's spine.
"He is clever," she murmured, gripping her trident tighter. "Too clever."
And then, a second shadow rose from beneath the waves-not Kaelthar's. Massive, serpentine, scales glimmering with moonlight, it circled the fleet, attacking friend and foe alike. "What...?" Aurelya whispered. The creature answered not with words but with destruction, tearing ships apart as if it had risen to feed on ambition itself.
Kaelthar hissed in fury. "Another ancient! But... its allegiance is unclear. Queen, command it!"
Aurelya raised her trident, summoning the Tide of Echoes, a wave of magic that allowed her to speak to the ocean itself. The serpentine monster paused, towering above the water, eyes glowing. It seemed to understand, bowing slightly before twisting into the storm, attacking only the fleet, leaving her ship untouched.
Thrynn's expression twisted with rage. "No! This cannot be! I command the Skull! I command the tides!"
Aurelya's eyes narrowed. "No mortal commands what was forged before time itself," she said, her voice carrying over the chaos like a beacon. "Not even you."
The battle raged, lightning splitting the clouds, waves crashing higher than mountains, the screams of men drowned beneath the roar of dragons and ancient sea creatures. And then... Thrynn vanished.
Not dead, not defeated. He simply disappeared into the shadows, leaving only a trail of smoke and the faint whisper of the Skull. Aurelya's stomach twisted with unease. This was no ordinary foe. He would return, stronger, smarter-and he would not come alone.
Kaelthar landed beside her, massive claws splashing the deck. "He will strike again, and next time, the ocean may not answer your call alone," he warned.
Aurelya's eyes swept the horizon, the wind whipping her hair like liquid night. Somewhere beneath the waves, the Skull whispered, its ancient voice curling around her mind, promising secrets, power... and betrayal.
The Queen of Tides clenched her jaw. "Then we will be ready," she said. But even as she spoke, a shadow beneath the ship twisted unnaturally, moving with intelligence and malice. Something else had awakened. Something that had been waiting. An ocean held it's breath.
