Chapter 55: The Upper Moon Roster
The silence following the brutal lower moon duel was heavy, pregnant with anticipation and dread. The demonstration was clear: rank was not just a title; it was a reflection of lethal capability, often of a subtle and terrifying kind. Now, all eyes—those that had them—turned upward to the Ghost King. The real prizes, the positions of power and greater infusions of the master's blood, were about to be named.
Shuichi Mayuki let the silence stretch, savoring the focused hunger in the air. Then, his voice, calm and absolute, rang out.
"The Upper Moon of the Twelve Kizuki."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the nine demons who were not in the lower ranks. Momiji, White Fang, Kirihime, Kagemi, Onigarasu, Karyūka, Tenmu (present but relegated to observer status), and the unnamed Iburi-descended demon who was little more than a silent, mist-cloaked wraith.
"Upper Moon Six," he began, starting from the bottom of the upper tier. "Karyūka, the Flowing Snow."
The sickly-turned-demonic girl with snow-white hair and pale horns did not react visibly, but a faint chill seemed to emanate from her spot. Her power, Zero, was one of insidious decay of intellect and body, a passive, area-denial horror. She was a strategic weapon, not a frontline brawler, making Six a fitting, if dangerous, position.
"Upper Moon Five," Shuichi continued. "Kirihime, the Silent Mist."
The girl with the misty eyes and silver tracery gave a slight, graceful bow of her head. Her Mist of Decay was perfect for assassination, infiltration, and creating zones of irreversible aging. She was a scalpel, a tool for precise, untraceable erasure.
"Upper Moon Four." His eyes settled on the massive, insectoid form. "Mushiji, the Insect Lord."
The chitinous demon shifted, its armored plates clicking. Its Adaptive Carapace and newly developed Devouring Bite made it a relentless, evolving tank. It could weather attacks and, given the right meal, potentially steal new powers. A brute force pillar of the upper ranks.
"Upper Moon Three." A ripple of tension went through some of the demons. This was the first of the truly elite combat positions. "Kagemi, the Mirror Shadow."
The demon with crimson hair and golden serpentine eyes remained still, but a flicker of satisfaction was undeniable. Her control over Layered Space was unparalleled among them, allowing for instant transport, battlefield manipulation, and inescapable prisons. She was the strategist's hand and the jailer.
"Upper Moon Two." The air grew colder. This was the second-in-command, the demon closest to the Ghost King in direct power and trust. Shuichi's gaze lingered on the two strongest contenders. "Onigarasu, the Ghost Crow."
The great crow, its metallic feathers glinting, let out a soft, echoing caw that held a note of triumph. Its intelligence, its evolved Murder of Crows: Fusion, and its mastery of psychological and physical warfare made it a commander of nightmares. It was a symbol of the Kizuki's reach and intelligence.
And then, there was one.
Every demon present knew who it had to be. The one whose rampage had drawn the attention of nations. The one who had integrated a stolen Doujutsu into his demonic core. The one whose very name was now a curse in the Land of Fire.
"Upper Moon One." Shuichi Mayuki's voice did not rise, but it carried a final, absolute weight. "White Fang, the Severing Wave."
The entity that had been Kakashi Hatake stood motionless. There was no pride, no acknowledgment in its grey, dead-fish eyes. There was only the silent acceptance of a tool being placed in its designated slot. Its power was sheer, overwhelming destructive force, capable of cutting through space and, with its evolving eye, potentially manipulating it. It was the spearpoint, the unstoppable force meant to break the enemy's strongest defenses.
The ranking was set. A hierarchy of horror, from the subtle poison of Six to the world-cleaving blade of One.
"These are your ranks," Shuichi proclaimed. "They are not static. Strength grows, circumstances change. The Upper Moons may challenge each other for position, with my approval. The Lower Moons may challenge the Upper, should they believe their power has eclipsed the weakest of the Six." His eyes briefly touched Karyūka, a silent reminder that even the Upper ranks were not safe. "Serve well. Grow stronger. Make the name of the Twelve Kizuki a whisper that freezes the blood of every human and shinobi in this world."
He raised a hand. "Now, receive the mark of your station and the first reward of your rank."
From his fingertips, twelve tendrils of dark, shimmering blood—thicker and more potent than the usual transformative fluid—shot out. Each tendril found its target, not injecting them, but coiling around their left arms, just below the shoulder. The blood hardened, cooled, and transformed into a permanent, intricate tattoo: a stylized, broken circle with a kanji number inside denoting their rank—壹 for White Fang, 貳 for Onigarasu, down to 六 for Karyūka on the upper arm, and the simpler numerals 1-6 on the forearms of the Lower Moons.
As the marks settled, a wave of potent energy flooded each demon. It was the "reward"—a concentrated dose of the Ghost King's own power, boosting their base abilities, accelerating their healing, and deepening their connection to the Blood Curse. The Upper Moons received a significantly larger share, a tangible representation of their status.
Momiji, standing as an unranked observer (effectively the strongest outside the official roster), felt a pang of fierce, thorny ambition. He should be up there. He would be. He would grow his forest of thorns until it could strangle the very sun, and then he would claim his place among the Upper Moons, starting with Six and climbing his way to the top.
The organization was now fully realized. It had a structure, a hierarchy, a brand, and a palpable gradient of power. The Twelve Kizuki were no longer a rumor or a scattered threat. They were a legion, with commanders, specialists, and a singular, devastating champion. The shadow war had just been officially incorporated.
