Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Lower Moon Duel

Chapter 53: The Lower Moon Duel

The Mirror Twin's gesture was so absurdly polite, so utterly human, that it threw the feral, battle-ready Hellthunder off balance for a crucial second. A sneer started to form on Hellthunder's lips—this was a fight, not a tea party.

That split-second of hesitation was all the Mirror Twin needed.

His outstretched hand didn't wait for a handshake. The air around it rippled. It wasn't a spatial distortion like Kamui or Kagemi's folds. It was like the air itself became a liquid mirror. From that rippling surface, a perfect, mirrored copy of Hellthunder's own right hand shot out—not a ghostly illusion, but a solid, flesh-and-bone duplicate, moving with the same speed and intent as Hellthunder himself would have used for a crushing grip.

Hellthunder jerked his own hand back, but the mirrored copy was faster, clamping onto his wrist with crushing force. The sensation was bizarre—it was his own strength being used against him.

Blood Demon Art: Mirror Image Genesis.

The Mirror Twin didn't create illusions or clones. He created temporary, physical reflections of his target's own body parts or weapons, controlled by his will. The closer the target, the more precise and powerful the reflection.

With a grunt of pain and surprise, Hellthunder channeled his power. Jagged, black arcs of electricity—his Blood Demon Art: Cursed Lightning—crawled up his arm to shock the mirrored hand into release.

The mirrored hand didn't flinch. It simply copied. From its palm, an identical burst of black Cursed Lightning erupted, meeting Hellthunder's own attack in a crackling, sizzling clash of identical energies. The force of the dual lightning explosions threw both combatants apart.

Hellthunder landed skidding, his wrist burned from his own lightning, his eyes wide with a new kind of fury. "You copycat bastard!"

The Mirror Twin landed gracefully, his expression still placid. "I reflect," he corrected softly. "Your rage. Your power. Your self." His voice was an echo of Hellthunder's own, slightly distorted.

Enraged, Hellthunder abandoned caution. He became a storm. He lunged, fists crackling with black lightning, feet moving in blurs of speed aimed to overwhelm the smaller demon with sheer, violent force.

And the Mirror Twin danced. He didn't attack directly. He parried. But his parries weren't blocks; they were mirrors. When Hellthunder threw a lightning-wreathed punch, the Mirror Twin's forearm would ripple, and an identical, mirrored fist would intercept it from an impossible angle. When Hellthunder tried a sweeping kick, a mirrored leg would snap out to meet it. The sound was a continuous, percussive crunch-crack-boom of identical forces colliding.

Hellthunder was fighting himself. Every ounce of strength he poured out was returned to him with equal measure. It was maddening. He was exhausting himself, burning through his demonic energy, while the Mirror Twin seemed to expend only the energy required to maintain the reflections—a far more efficient use of power.

"Stand and fight, you coward!" Hellthunder roared, unleashing a wider-area technique. "Blood Demon Art: Lightning Burial!" He slammed his hands on the wooden floor. A web of black lightning spread out from him, seeking to electrocute everything in a ten-meter radius.

The Mirror Twin finally moved from his defensive position. He didn't retreat. He stepped into the spreading lightning web. As the black currents reached his feet, the floor around him rippled like a silver pond. From the ripples, a perfect, inverted reflection of the lightning web erupted upwards, meeting the descending one.

For a moment, the dueling arena was filled with a crackling, black lattice of lightning, frozen in a lethal stalemate of perfect opposition.

It was Hellthunder who broke first. Maintaining the large-scale Lightning Burial was a tremendous drain. The mirrored version, fueled by his own attack, cost the Mirror Twin little. With a gasp, Hellthunder let the technique falter.

The mirrored lightning web pressed down. Hellthunder screamed as his own cursed energy washed back over him, searing his flesh, overloading his senses. He collapsed to his knees, smoke rising from his body, his demonic regeneration struggling to keep up with the damage he had just inflicted upon himself.

The Mirror Twin walked calmly through the fading energy. He stopped before the kneeling, shuddering Hellthunder. He didn't deliver a final blow. He simply looked down, his calm eyes reflecting Hellthunder's agony back at him.

"The reflection is always true," the Mirror Twin said. "Your strength is your weakness. Your rage is your cage. You lose."

The fight was over. It hadn't been a clash of spectacular, different powers. It had been a lesson in introspection turned violent. Hellthunder had been defeated not by a stronger enemy, but by the perfect, unbearable echo of his own savage self.

From the high platform, Shuichi Mayuki watched, a faint nod of approval. The Mirror Twin's power was psychologically devastating against brash, emotional fighters. A perfect lower-rank enforcer. Hellthunder would keep his rank, having lost his challenge. The lower string order was set.

"The challenge is concluded," Shuichi's voice boomed. "Lower Three, Hellthunder, fails. The ranks stand." His gaze swept over the other demons, their faces now marked with new wariness, calculation, or, in Momiji's case, simmering ambition. "Let this be a lesson. Strength is not merely power. It is control. It is understanding. Remember this as you serve in the Twelve Kizuki."

The first formal duel of the Kizuki had established more than just ranks; it had established a tone of cold, reflective menace. The organization was no longer a scattered pack of monsters. It was a hierarchy with its own brutal, internal logic. And the real battles, for the coveted upper ranks, were yet to come.
