Chapter 50: The Stolen Eye & The Evolving War
Uchiha Obito emerged from the Kamui dimension in a hidden cave far to the north, his hand clamped over his neck. The wound there had already sealed, the potent Hashirama cells doing their work, but the phantom sensation of the invisible slash lingered, a cold line of remembered death. The wound on his face was a shallow scar.
But the physical pain was nothing. The psychic shock, the violation, was everything.
Kakashi—no, the thing that wore Kakashi's face—had hurt him. Not through speed or trickery, but with a look. A gaze that bypassed spatial intangibility and drew blood. That was a power that shouldn't exist. And the eye… the kaleidoscope Sharingan, his eye, had mutated into something dark, polluted, a twisted mockery of Uchiha power.
Fury, cold and profound, settled in Obito's gut. This wasn't just about reclaiming an asset anymore. This was about erasing a blasphemy. The demonic corruption had touched something sacred to him, the last physical legacy of his old life.
He reached out through his link with Zetsu. "The target is confirmed. It possesses a line-of-sight attack that can penetrate Kamui's intangibility. Its left eye—my eye—has been altered by the demonic transformation. It is no longer a pure Sharingan."
A moment passed before the response oozed into his mind. "Penetrates intangibility? Fascinating. The demonic energy must be interacting with the ocular chakra on a fundamental level, creating a hybrid phenomenon. The 'Eye of the Moon' plan requires pure chakra, Obito. A corrupted vessel is worse than useless. It is a risk."
"I am aware," Obito thought back, his mental voice sharp. "The plan is unchanged. But this… thing… cannot be allowed to exist. It is an aberration. And it wields a piece of me as a weapon. I will retrieve it, and then I will purge it from existence with the purest flames."
"As you wish," Zetsu's voice was unreadable, a blend of amusement and ancient calculation. "But caution is advised. If its gaze can hurt you in a phased state, other dimensions may not offer perfect protection. And the one who created it… we still do not know their full reach."
Obito dismissed the concern. He had been arrogant, expecting the mindless beast the reports described. He would not make that mistake again. The next encounter would be on his terms, with the full, brutal force of his Mangekyo abilities and the Elemental Nations' most feared space-time ninjutsu. He would not just take the eye; he would dismantle the monster that wore it, piece by tainted piece.
In Konoha, the emergency council had dispersed, leaving a grim resolve in its wake. The confirmed loss of Kakashi Hatake and his team, coupled with the horrific efficiency of "White Fang's" subsequent killings, had shattered any illusion of containment. Official war had not been declared, because there was no nation to declare it against. But a state of emergency now existed within the Land of Fire.
Hunter-nin teams, now dubbed "Kizuki Pursuit Units," were being formed with specialists from every relevant clan: Yamanaka for mental defense and interrogation of survivors (few as they were), Aburame for tracking unusual biological signatures, Hyuga for all-around sensory superiority, and Nara for tactical command. Their orders were shoot-on-sight for any confirmed "Kizuki," with priority on the entity codenamed White Fang.
Sarutobi had also, reluctantly, authorized the use of forbidden sealing techniques designed to annihilate spiritual energy and suppress regenerative abilities. The philosophy had shifted from "capture and study" to "identify and erase."
Yet, there was a hollow feeling in the war room. They were reacting. The enemy set the tempo, the locations, the objectives. They were fighting ghosts in the dark.
In the Land of Rivers, Shuichi Mayuki monitored the aftermath of the brief encounter through the Blood Curse. He felt White Fang's confusion, the surge of power in the mutated eye, and the distant, cold fury of the masked Uchiha.
"Interesting," he murmured. "The transplanted eye reacted to its original owner. It didn't reject the demonic blood; it incorporated it. Evolved." This was valuable data. Bloodline limits could be enhanced through demonization. The potential was staggering.
But the Uchiha's reaction was the true prize. The masked man—Obito, as Shuichi had deduced from Itachi's old, careful mentions and the unique nature of his space-time jutsu—was now personally invested. He was no longer a distant observer. He was a new piece on the board, a wild card of immense power and personal grievance.
This changed the calculus. Obito and his organization, the Akatsuki, were rivals in the grand scheme, competitors for the world's chaos. But a direct confrontation now would be premature. Better to let Obito's rage be a weapon against Konoha, or to let Konoha's desperate hunt for White Fang bleed them against Obito's power.
"White Fang," Shuichi commanded along the psychic link. "Your location is compromised. The masked one will return, and he will not be alone. Cease your concentrated harvesting. Disperse. Become a whisper, not a roar. Hit isolated outposts, supply caravans, then vanish before a response can be mounted. Your new eye… learn its capabilities. It is a gift from your enemy. Use it."
He then turned his attention to the other fronts. Onigarasu was in position, observing Danzo's stagnant trap with avian disdain. Momiji and Kagemi were closing in on Yamato's last known location. The pieces were moving.
The war was no longer a simple monster hunt. It was a three-way shadow conflict between Konoha's established order, the Akatsuki's apocalyptic dream, and the rising, hungry chaos of the Twelve Kizuki. And the Ghost King, from his throne of mist and blood, was the only one who could see all the pieces on the board. He would let the fire and the dream fight each other, while his demons grew stronger in the ashes they left behind. The true game had only just begun.
