The note on the inner table at the corridor said: No council today.
It was in Tauriel's hand.
It was not in her formal hand — the one she used at the petition wing and on the council adoptions — but in the small private hand she used for the notes between them at long benches and at long corridors at the proper hours of fifteen years. It was folded once at the centre. It had been set on the inner table at the corridor at some point in the small careful steady inner hours before the seventh bell of the morning, when she had risen ahead of him and had been at the corridor in the small careful steady inner way of an Elven woman who had been preparing a thing.
Aldric registered the note at the half-hour past the seventh bell.
He stopped at the inner table.
He read the four words.
He read them a second time.
He folded the note. He set it back at the small careful steady inner pattern she had set it in. He went on along the corridor to the upper rooms. He did not, on going on, set the note inside the inner pocket of his coat.
He left it on the table.
He thought, in the small flat private inward way, that he had been left a note on an inner table at a corridor on perhaps four mornings in the fifteen years of marriage. The earlier mornings, in the small careful steady inner inventory of his memory, had been: the morning after the binding, when the keep women had been at the chamber until the second bell and Tauriel had set a note on the inner table at the corridor for him to find when he came up; the morning of the first day of the Great Winter, when the council had agreed at the second bell of the night before that the lord would not be at the council until the matter at the lower farms had been settled; the morning Cael had first walked, in the small careful steady inner privacy of the family quarters, with no one else in the chamber; and the morning of the third week after Lúthien's birth when Tauriel had been at the inner sleep that came at the third week and had not, at the seventh bell, been able to set the words at the long bench under the window.
This was the fifth.
He went up the stair to the family quarters.
He stopped at the door.
Tauriel was at the long fur in the small careful steady inner half-light of the southern alcove. She had Lúthien on her lap. The daughter was nearly five, by Arethil's slow careful Elven count, and was at the small careful steady inner pattern of being lifted onto her mother's lap at the third quarter-hour past the seventh bell of any morning that her mother was at the long fur and not at the wing.
Cael was at the long fur.
He had — by the small careful steady inner reading at the door — set out the small wooden tally-stick beside him, in the small careful steady inner pattern of a boy who had been working at the tally-stick for some seasons. He had on the small grey tunic of the spring fitting. He had — by the small careful steady inner registering of a father who had been at the door of the family quarters at the seventh bell for years — registered that this morning was not the standard pattern of the seventh bell, because his father, at the door, was at the door at the half-hour and not at the second bell of the morning.
He looked up at his father.
He did not, in the looking, say anything.
He set the tally-stick aside.
He waited.
Aldric crossed the long fur.
He sat at the long fur beside Cael at the proper distance.
He did not, on sitting, immediately speak.
He set his arm at the boy's small shoulder. The boy did not, on the setting, register surprise; he had been registering, by his own small careful steady inner reading at the long fur, that the morning's set was — by some careful steady inner work in the corridor at the inner table — a set of the family quarters and not of the country.
Tauriel inclined her head a fraction at Aldric across the long fur.
She said, in the small low voice she used at the family quarters at the early hour: "Celwyn knows."
"How long."
"For the day. I asked her the small note three evenings ago. She has held the small folded summaries of the day's matters; nothing on the table is at the small careful steady inner urgent the morning's setting cannot, by Celwyn's hand, hold to tomorrow. She will, if a thing is at the small careful steady inner urgent, send up. She has — by my small careful steady inner ask, which is the only ask I am setting this morning — agreed not to send up unless the matter is at the small careful steady inner level of the council's actual emergency clauses."
"All right."
"All right."
He drew a slow breath.
He did not, on the drawing, set out any further.
He set his other hand on the long fur, beside Cael's small hand, in the small careful steady inner gesture he had been making at long furs for years.
Cael, at his side, set the small wooden tally-stick a finger's width sideways on the long fur and rested his small hand on top of Aldric's, in the small careful steady inner imitating-gesture he had been making at the long fur for some seasons.
The four of them sat at the long fur in the small careful steady inner pattern.
They were at the orchard at the third bell of the afternoon.
The apple tree at the south curve of the orchard — the one Aldric had planted in the year of the founding with his own hand, the one Tauriel had pruned for him at the third autumn when the carpenter had cut her the small inner pruning-shears that had been the small careful steady inner gift of the carpenter to a Lady whose husband was — by the small flat private inner registering of the carpenter — about to lose the tree to the small bad cut at the third branch — had three apples on it this spring. The apples were small. The carpenter had told Aldric, at the second autumn after the third autumn's pruning, that the tree would not give the country more than three or four apples in any year of its life, by the small careful steady inner working of the orchard's particular soil and by the small careful steady inner working of the third branch's particular cut.
The tree had been giving three or four apples each year for the past nine years.
The apples were always small.
The apples were always there.
Cael was at the tree.
He was at it in the small careful steady inner way he had been at it since the first spring he had been able to walk down to the orchard with his father — at the proper distance from the lower trunk, with his small hand at the small careful steady inner registering of the lowest grafting line where the small worked iron of the dwarven smith's grafting-pin had been set thirteen years ago, when Aldric had been worried about the tree at the long winter of the year before. The iron of the grafting-pin had — by the small careful steady inner inventory of the dwarven smith — held for thirteen years and would, by the same inventory, hold for another thirty.
Cael set his hand on the grafting-pin.
He did not, on setting it, speak.
Lúthien was at the long grass beside the lower trunk.
She had her small carry-shawl on the long grass — Tauriel had folded it for her at the noon hour — and she had set out, on the carry-shawl, the small handful of small flat stones she had been collecting at the small inner courtyard for some weeks. She was at the small steady careful inner work of arranging them in a small careful steady inner row along the edge of the carry-shawl, in the small careful steady inner pattern of a small careful steady five-year-old who had been arranging small flat stones on small carry-shawls for some seasons.
She was, by Aldric's small careful steady inner reading at the proper distance, in the small inner Sindar of her own.
Tauriel was at the small low stone bench at the inner edge of the orchard. The bench had been set there by the carpenter at the seventh year of the founding, in the small careful steady inner courtesy of a carpenter who had been told by the keep women that the orchard's south curve was the small careful steady inner place the Lady and the lord came to at the noon hour of the day, on the days they were able to come, in the small careful steady inner privacy of the orchard. The carpenter had cut the bench to two seats. He had set it at the proper distance from the apple tree.
She was at one of the two seats.
The other was empty.
Aldric crossed the long grass.
He sat on the bench beside her.
He did not, on sitting, immediately speak.
He looked at the apple tree across the small careful steady inner distance.
He looked at his son at the grafting-pin.
He looked at his daughter at the small flat stones.
Tauriel, on the bench beside him, set her hand on the small worked wood of the bench between them in the small flat steady careful inner gesture of the long bench under the long window.
He did not, at first, set his hand under hers.
He looked at the apple tree.
He set his hand inside the inner pocket of his coat — the inner pocket where Halbarad's chalk pocket sat, where the white-hand seal sat, where Halbarad's one-line note sat — and he took out, from the small careful steady inner bottom of the inner pocket, a small folded piece of paper that he had set there at the half-hour past the seventh bell of the morning.
The piece of paper was Tauriel's note.
He had picked it up off the inner table on the corridor at the half-hour past the seventh bell, in the small careful steady inner moment he had decided, in the corridor, to take it with him; he had set it inside the inner pocket as he came up the stair to the family quarters; he had been carrying it through the long late morning at the long fur and the long noon meal at the small family table and the long walk down to the orchard at the third bell.
He held the note in his hand for a beat.
He set it on the small worked wood of the bench, between her hand and his.
He did not, on setting it, say anything.
He set his hand under hers.
She did not, on the setting, immediately move her hand.
She looked at the note on the wood between them.
She did not, by his small careful steady inner reading at the bench beside her, register surprise.
After a long beat she set her free hand against the small folded paper — the small flat steady inner gesture of committing — and she did not, in the setting, unfold the note or take it up or set it aside.
She left it on the small worked wood between them.
She inclined her head, very slightly.
He inclined his head a fraction in return.
That was the moment.
He did not, on the moment, set any further words. She did not, on the moment, set any further words. The note sat on the worked wood between them, in the small flat steady careful inner shape of a piece of paper one of them had set out at a corridor at the half-hour past the seventh bell of the morning and which the other had carried, by his own choice, through the long late morning and the long noon and the long afternoon to the orchard at the third bell, and they sat at the bench at the proper distance with the apple tree across the small careful steady inner distance and the son at the grafting-pin and the daughter at the small flat stones, and the keep, beyond the orchard's small inner wall, held its own.
The note stayed on the bench.
The hands rested.
The orchard held the long afternoon.
