Chapter 115 - CHAPTER 115: Confront What Is Hidden

The council session had cleared at the seventh bell of the evening.

It had been a long session, by the standard of the autumn's sessions; the matters on the table had been the small careful steady inner matters of the year-end audit Celwyn presented to the council in the autumn of every fourth year — the small inner inventory of the realm's grain reserves and the inner inventory of the iron and timber stocks and the small careful steady inner inventory of the standing army's pay-roll and the small steady careful inner inventory of the contingencies the function had been holding under Maira's hand since the spring. The session had run from the second bell of the afternoon to the seventh.

The council had cleared.

The eleven civilian members had risen at the seventh bell, in the small careful steady inner pattern of council members who had been at long sessions for many years; they had inclined their heads to Aldric at the head of the table; they had gone out by the long inner door of the council chamber. Maira had stayed for the small careful steady inner exchange of the matters that did not fit on the public minutes, in the small flat private way the head of the function had been staying after the council sessions for some years. Gorlim had stayed for the small inner exchange of the captain marshal's working notes. Halbarad the Younger had stayed at the second council seat in the small slow careful inner pattern of a captain who had been at the second seat for the better part of two years and who was, in the small steady careful inner work of those two years, building the small careful steady inner habit of being the last to leave.

The three of them — Maira, Gorlim, Halbarad the Younger — had risen at the half of the eighth bell.

They had inclined their heads.

They had gone.

The chamber was empty.

Tauriel was at her own seat at the long table on Aldric's right.

She had not, by Aldric's small careful steady reading at the head of the table, set up to leave at any of the points where the small careful steady inner courtesy of the council session would have given her the small careful steady inner moment to leave. She had not stood at the seventh bell with the eleven civilians. She had not stood at the half of the eighth with Gorlim and Maira and Halbarad the Younger. She had set her hands on the long table at the small careful steady inner pattern of a Lady who was, in the small careful steady inner work of the session's clearing, not at the work of leaving.

The chamber steward, at the long inner door, made the small steady careful inner step that was the small inner signal of shall I close the door for the night, in the small careful steady inner way the chamber steward had been making the signal for years.

Tauriel turned her head a fraction.

She said, in the small low voice: "Close the door. We will be at the chamber for some time."

The chamber steward inclined his head.

He closed the door.

The chamber was quiet.

Aldric, at the head of the table, did not, for a long beat, speak.

He set his hands at the long table at the small careful steady inner pattern of a man who had been at long tables for fifteen years; he did not, by any of the small careful steady inner gestures of his hand, set out the small careful steady inner readiness of what is the matter, Tauriel. He did not, by any small careful steady inner movement, push the moment.

He waited.

She drew a slow breath.

She said, in the small low voice she had been holding for the better part of a year: "Aldric."

"Tauriel."

"There is — at this hour of this council session, on this evening of this autumn — a thing I have been carrying for some time. I am, at this chamber, going to set it on this table. You will, by the small careful steady inner pattern of a man who has been at this table for fifteen years, hear it. You will not — by my own small careful steady inner ask, which is the only ask I will set this evening — deflect it. I am not, by the small careful steady inner setting-out, going to ask anything that does not fit the small careful steady inner shape of what I am setting. I will set, by my own count, three small careful steady inner instances. I will not set more than three. The three I set will be the three I have, in the small careful steady inner inventory of fifteen years, registered with the clearest small careful steady inner reading. You will, at the end of the setting, answer me."

He inclined his head.

"Set them."

She set them.

She set them in the small careful steady inner voice she had been building the words at for the better part of a year. She did not, in the setting, raise the voice. She did not, in the setting, set out the small careful steady inner accusations a Mannish wife at a Mannish table might, in the small careful steady inner heat of the year-long preparation, have set out at the small steady careful inner moment. She set the three small steady careful inner instances in the small flat steady careful inner inventory of seven hundred and twenty-five years of an Elven mind that had been reading her husband at long tables and at long benches under long windows for fifteen years.

"On the morning Wulfgar son of Wulfric was brought up the ridge by Velan for the testimony of the column, Aldric, you did not — by my small careful steady inner reading at the upper room two days later when you came back — register that the column had been ordered to stand. You named the order before the column reached the wall. You named it from the ridge, by your own account at the upper room. You named it before the column did the thing the column was, by your own naming, about to do. You read the line at the wall before the line had reached the wall. The Ranger boy who carried the order down to Velan, by Velan's own later account in the lower chamber the year Halbarad began to receive the captains there, told me that the lord on the ridge had set out the order in the form they have been told to stand — not 'they will,' not 'they may,' but 'they have been.' That was — Aldric — the reading of a man who knew, by some small careful steady inner reading the rest of us at the country did not have, what the column had been instructed to do."

She paused.

She did not, on pausing, look at him.

She set the second.

"On the second evening after Lúthien's birth, in the chamber with the long-fur, you set your hand on the rug at the worn place. You did not, on the setting, register the small worn place as a thing you had not seen before. You had told me, on the morning of her birth in the chamber when you had first registered the worn place, that you had been walking past it for ten years. By the small careful steady inner reading at the second evening — Aldric — you did not, in the second-evening setting, look at the worn place. You set your hand on it without looking. You knew where it was. You had been, by the small careful steady inner reading of your hand, carrying the place through ten years of not naming it. You had — Aldric — at the second evening, in the small careful steady inner privacy of your own knowing, been preparing for it to be named at the first daughter's birth-night. The worn place was not, at the second evening, a thing you had just seen. The worn place was a thing you had been keeping, by your own small careful steady inner hand, for the moment it was named."

A pause.

She set the third.

"And — Aldric — on the third evening of the autumn before this one, when Saramund son of Saraman of Curunír's hand was at the south gate. You set the line on the sealed sheet in his hand without — by any of the small careful steady inner readings I have done on you at fifteen years of small careful steady inner watching at long tables — having to compose it. You set the line as a man who had already composed it. You set the line as a man who had known, by some small careful steady inner reading of his own, that the offer would come and that the line was the line he would set when it came. The line was on your hand before the offer broke the seal. You did not — Aldric — by any small careful steady inner movement, register surprise at the offer. You registered the small flat private inner acknowledgment of a thing arriving that you had been preparing the response to."

She stopped.

She did not, in the stopping, look at him.

She set her hands at the long table at the small careful steady inner pattern of a Lady who had set three small careful steady inner instances at a long table and was, by the small careful steady inner work of her own hand, at the end of her own setting.

She said, in the small low voice: "Aldric. I have, in the years past, given you the small careful steady inner courtesy of not setting these three at any other long table. I have given the courtesy because — at every one of the three, and at the dozens of small careful steady inner instances I have not, this evening, named — you have, in the same small careful steady inner pattern, set the small careful steady inner reading aside as the small careful steady inner reading of a man who had been at long roads for many years and had, by the small careful steady inner work of those roads, developed the small careful steady inner habit of being prepared. I have, by the small careful steady inner courtesy of a wife who has set the small careful steady inner trust of a husband at the centre of fifteen years of marriage, accepted the small careful steady inner reading of long roads. I am — Aldric — at this council chamber, this evening, no longer accepting it. The reading is not the reading of long roads. The reading is the reading of a man who knows. The reading is the reading of a man who has known — by my own count of the three I have named, and of the dozens I have not — since before we met. You — Aldric — know. You have always known. I am at this council chamber to ask you to tell me what you know."

She stopped.

She did not, in the stopping, raise her eyes to his.

She set her hands flat on the long table — the small careful steady inner gesture of committing.

She said, very quietly: "I will not, Aldric, sit at this long table at the head of which I have been at fifteen years of councils, beside the man at the head of the long table at the head of which he has been at fifteen years of councils, and accept that the small careful steady inner thing he has known he has carried alone. I am not asking you to set out all of it. I am asking you to set out the shape. I am — Aldric — asking. I have been asking, by the small careful steady inner registering of seven hundred and twenty-five years, in every small careful steady inner moment I have not named at every long table at every long evening for some years. I am asking now."

The chamber was quiet for a long count of breaths.

Aldric, at the head of the table, did not — by any of the small careful steady inner gestures of his hand or of his shoulder or of his face — register surprise.

He did not — by any of the small careful steady inner gestures — register denial.

He set his hands at the long table.

He looked at her.

He said, in the small low voice he had been preparing — by his own small careful steady inner reading of his own hand at the long table for some years — for the moment the asking would come: "Not in this chamber, Tauriel."

She inclined her head a fraction.

"Where."

"The upper room. The long bench under the window. The chamber steward will, in the next quarter-hour, have closed the south corridor at the chamber steward's own discretion. I will be at the upper room at the eighth bell of the night. The chamber will be — for the count of the long evening — ours. The children are at the family quarters with the keep women. Halbarad the Younger is at the lower chamber with his father. The keep, at the eighth bell, will be at its own settling."

"The eighth bell."

"The eighth bell."

She inclined her head.

She rose.

She did not, on rising, set her hand on the long table.

She went out of the council chamber by the long inner door, in the small steady careful inner pace of a Lady who had been at fifteen years of small careful steady inner long-tables and was, at the moment of leaving this one, leaving it for the small careful steady inner exchange that would, by the small careful steady inner work of one evening, decide what the next fifteen years of long tables would be.

The door closed behind her.

Aldric sat at the head of the table for some minutes after the door closed.

He set his hand against the inner pocket of his coat. He felt, under his palm, the small worn leather of Halbarad's chalk pocket; he felt, beside it, the small folded paper of Halbarad's one-line note; he felt, beside that, the small folded square of the broken white-hand seal.

He took the chalk pocket out.

He set it on the long table.

He looked at it for a long beat.

He said, under his breath — to himself, not to the chamber: "All right."

He stood up.

He went out.
