Chapter 39: The Out-of-Bounds Error and the Remnants of Humanity
The aftermath of the Sentinel encounter left the Secret Continent in a state of eerie luminescence. The sky remained fractured, displaying "Graphical Glitches" where the blue of the atmosphere bled into the violet void of the higher dimensions. Zhou Fan stood at the edge of the obsidian spire, his eyes reflecting the flickering data streams of the Logarithmic Existence.
His mind was no longer a single stream of consciousness; it was a partitioned drive, half-processing the defense of the planet, and the other half obsessively analyzing the "Harvested Data" from the Sentinels. The realization that he was "External Code"—something that didn't originate from this universal simulation—had created a massive [Cognitive Dissonance] in his soul.
"If I am from the 'Outside'," Zhou Fan whispered, his voice vibrating with a frequency that caused the air to crystallize, "then this entire world, the cultivation ranks, the suffering of the millions, and even my own revenge against the sects... it was all just a scripted play within a sandbox."
He looked at his hands. They were becoming increasingly transparent, revealing a skeletal structure made of pure, white light. He was "Leaking" out of the simulation's boundaries.
The Awakening of the Forgotten Sects
While Zhou Fan grappled with his identity, the rest of the world was in turmoil. The "Heavenly Vision" of the Sentinels' destruction had been seen by every living being across the four continents. To the common people, it was a war of gods. To the hidden, ancient cultivators, it was a signal that the "Great Reset" was imminent.
In the Continent of Whispers, deep within the "Vortex of Mists," three ancient figures sat in a circle. These were the [Legacy Protectors], beings who had survived previous "Patch Updates" by hiding their life signatures in the gaps of the world's code.
"The Architect has touched the Source Code," the first protector, a woman with skin like cracked parchment, croaked. "He has defeated the Sentinels, but in doing so, he has flagged our entire sector for High-Level Erasure."
"We cannot allow him to continue," the second protector added, his eyes glowing with a stagnant green light. "If the Designers decide to 'Wipe the Drive', we will all perish. We must infiltrate the Secret Continent and extract his 'Source Key'. If we kill him, the system might stabilize."
"He is not a man anymore," the third warned. "He is a Logic-Gate. To kill him, we must strike at the only 'Analogue' part of his existence."
They all turned their gaze toward the image of Ling Er flickering in their scrying pool.
The Core of the Shrine
Back in the Great Shrine, Ling Er was undergoing a transformation of her own. The Source Key Zhou Fan had given her was slowly syncing with her heartbeat. She wasn't becoming a machine like Zhou Fan; instead, she was becoming the [Biological Interface].
"Master Zhou?" she called out as she saw him descend from the spire. He moved with a stuttering motion, his frames-per-second seemingly out of sync with the world.
"Ling Er," Zhou Fan replied, his voice coming from three different directions at once. "The data I harvested... it reveals a 'Memory Partition' inside my soul. It is locked behind a [High-Encryption Firewall]. To open it, I need to enter a state of 'Absolute Zero Processing'."
"What does that mean?" she asked, stepping toward him, though the static radiating from his body made her skin tingle.
"I must shut down all my defensive sub-routines," he explained, his gaze turning solemn. "For one hour, I will be a 'Ghost in the Shell'. I will have no power, no logic, and no protection. I will be diving into the 'Root Directory' of my existence to find out who—or what—I really am."
He looked at her, and for a fleeting second, the cold, violet light in his eyes softened into the warm brown of the man she once knew. "During this hour, the Continent's firewall will be at 10% capacity. The ancient sects... they are coming for me. They think my death will save them from the Designers."
Ling Er gripped the Source Key. Her eyes flashed with a fierce determination. "Go into your 'Zero State'. I will be your firewall. I will hold the bridge, Zhou Fan. Even if the heavens fall, I will not let them touch your soul."
Zhou Fan nodded. He sat in the center of the shrine, and his body suddenly turned into a statue of cold, grey stone. The humming of the towers stopped. The lights dimmed. The Architect was "Offline."
At that exact moment, the mists surrounding the Secret Continent parted. Hundreds of ancient flying vessels, carrying the last remnants of the world's most powerful (and desperate) cultivators, appeared on the horizon. The [Last Crusade of the Simulation] had begun.
