Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: The Words I Didn’t Mean to Say

Nihal's POV

I wasn't supposed to care.

Meher was laughing—head tilted, eyes bright—standing between Aryan and Vedant like she belonged there.

They were talking about something trivial.

A professor's weird analogy.

A meme Aryan had sent.

Something that didn't matter.

But she was smiling.

And I wasn't part of it.

I stood a few feet away, pretending to scroll through my phone, pretending not to notice how close Aryan leaned in when he spoke.

How Vedant looked at her like she was the only one who made sense in a room full of equations.

I told myself it was fine.

She was allowed to laugh.

Allowed to stand close.

Allowed to be warm.

But something twisted in my chest.

Not anger.

Not possessiveness.

Just… displacement.

I used to be the one she laughed with like that.

Later, when the crowd thinned and the corridor emptied, I found her near the vending machine.

She was alone.

For once.

"Hey," I said, too casually.

She turned, smiled. "Hey."

I hesitated. "You were with them."

She raised an eyebrow. "Yeah. Why?"

I shrugged. "Just… you seemed happy."

She tilted her head. "Is that a problem?"

"No," I said quickly. "It's just… weird."

She leaned against the wall. "Weird how?"

I looked at her, and the words came out before I could stop them.

"You laugh differently with them."

Her expression shifted—not defensive, not surprised. Just… still.

I kept going. "You don't laugh like that with me anymore."

She didn't speak.

"I mean, maybe you do," I added, fumbling. "But it's not the same. And I don't know why that bothers me."

Meher's voice was quiet. "It bothers you?"

I nodded. "Yeah. I guess it does."

She looked at me for a long moment. "Nihal…"

"I'm not saying anything," I interrupted. "I'm not trying to make it a thing. I just… I think I miss something. And I didn't realize it until I saw you with them."

She stepped closer, not too close. "You miss me?"

I swallowed. "I miss how you used to look at me like I mattered."

Silence.

Then she said, gently, "You still matter. But maybe not in the same way."

That landed harder than I expected.

I nodded, trying to smile. "Yeah. I figured."

She touched my arm lightly. "Don't confuse jealousy with feeling left behind. They're not the same."

I didn't reply.

She walked away, leaving me with the vending machine and a half-spoken truth.

I hadn't meant to confess anything.

But maybe I had.
