Chapter 13 - Chapter 14: I can’t pay your bills

"I can't take care of you."

The words landed heavier than I expected.

Not because they were cruel—but because they were true.

"I can't pay your bills.

I can't fix what you chose.

I can't be your escape."

She didn't argue.

She didn't plead.

That scared me more than if she had.

There was a time when I would've tried anyway.

Tried to be the hero.

The provider.

The man who sacrifices himself and calls it love.

But I've learned—

Some sacrifices aren't noble.

They're just slow suicides.

"I've done that before," I continued.

"Carried someone else's weight until my own back broke.

Called it loyalty while resentment quietly grew."

She looked at me like I was abandoning her.

Maybe I was.

But abandonment isn't always leaving someone helpless.

Sometimes it's refusing to lie about what you can give.

"I'm still building," I said.

"My life. My peace. My future.

If I step into your chaos, I lose all three."

I saw it then—the disappointment mixed with expectation.

The belief that because I cared, I owed her rescue.

Care doesn't equal responsibility.

And love doesn't mean debt.

"I won't be the man you lean on while I crumble," I said softly.

"Not again."

Silence stretched between us.

Not angry.

Just final.

This wasn't about money.

It was about boundaries.

About refusing to buy closeness with self-destruction.

I walked away knowing something important:

You don't save people by ruining yourself.

You don't prove love by paying for someone else's choices.

And you don't build a future by funding a past that won't let go.

I cared about her.

But caring without limits is how men disappear.

And this time—

I chose to stay.
