Chapter 17 - Practice - Basics Of Battle - Chapter 17

His system made this path possible.

Normally, creating multiple abilities was a huge risk.

Memory strain, aura imbalance, and mental overload—those were the reasons Nen users focused on one or two abilities at most.

Conrad didn't have that limitation like other Nen users.

His abilities could be separated.

Of course, that didn't mean he could be reckless.

"Conditions still matter."

"If I think that I can trick "Nen," which is essentially my life force, I would be only fooling myself."

Conrad leaned back and looked up at the ceiling.

"A mage-like Nen user,"

"Someone who fights using plans, not with impulse."

It matched his personality far better than a straightforward brawler or pure weapon specialist.

Even if he trained in close combat, and he fully intended to, his true strength would come from adaptability.

He stood up and walked toward the window.

A mage-type Nen user thrived in places like this where information mattered more than raw strength.

Places like Black Whale are especially better for him.

He returned to the desk and opened his notebook again.

At the top of a fresh page, he wrote:

First Nen Ability

He stared at the words for a moment, then closed the notebook again.

"No," he said quietly.

"Not tonight."

He wanted to jump straight into creating his first Nen ability.

The idea was tempting to him, who did not want to have Nen ability.

But creating Nen abilities wasn't something to rush.

Even a simple ability needed clear purpose to be created.

A bad first ability could limit him later.

Still, he felt confident.

After the water divination, he understood his aura better.

His Nen amount wasn't enormous, but it was enough to create his first "Hatsu."

"I'm not trying to create something powerful,"

"Just something useful."

"In my past life on Earth, I never needed to check the phone if it was late or not."

"If I have any messages or not."

"Not like I had any people to care about me..."

Conrad did not know why, but he felt some sort of longing in his heart.

He never put much thought on his past life or what his life was like on Earth.

He never had a mother or a father that he knew; he was an orphan of some sort, but not like due to the fact that he had his Uncle Rado.

"He is the only guy I miss that belongs to Earth..."

Uncle Rado was the man who helped him to grow up to become a full-fledged adult; he was not the exception or special but still had ordinary office work and could live alone.

"Anyway..."

"I do not need to think about that life of mine..."

"Not anymore..."

His body felt tired, not exhausted, but ready for rest.

Mental fatigue was more dangerous than physical exhaustion when working with Nen.

"Tomorrow morning..."

That would be the right moment.

The airship incident, the Black Merchant, and the sudden realization of how inexperienced he still was—it all weighed on him.

As he lay down on the bed, he slept quickly without overthinking about the past events or his past in general.

The next morning, Conrad woke up early.

He rolled out of bed and immediately started physical training.

Push-ups first.

Then pull-ups, using the door-mounted bar he had bought the night before.

Just solid, consistent bodyweight training.

He didn't rely on Nen for this.

Despite all the training Biscuit prepared for Gon and Killua while they were in Greed Island.

The fact that two boys were already strong physically, Biscuit did not miss the fact that she was punishing them if any one of them was late to see her numbers with Gyo.

It was a simple technique, but every punishment consisted of thousands of push-ups.

Which slowly built their physical capability to even more than they had before.

After about forty minutes, his muscles were warm and slightly sore.

He stretched properly, took a shower, and let the hot water relax his body.

After leaving the hotel, Conrad went straight to an electronics store and bought a powerful laptop.

Laptop in his bag, Conrad found a quiet café and sat near a corner table.

He ordered coffee, opened the laptop, and began researching again martial arts schools, private instructors, and training halls.

But this time, his mindset was different.

After about an hour, Conrad stopped typing.

Nen wasn't just mechanics.

It responded to the belief and emotion of the user.

Creating an ability just for the sake of having one felt wrong.

"If I rush it, the ability will be shallow."

He closed the laptop and looked out the window.

"One week," he decided. "I'll train for one week."

He wanted to understand combat from many angles.

If an enemy used a sword, he wanted to understand distance and timing.

If they boxed, he wanted to recognize footwork.

If they used traditional martial arts, he wanted to know how throws, strikes, and joint locks worked.

"I need to know what I am dealing with..."

Over the next hour, he booked several high-level short-term training sessions.

Sword training: basic stance, grip, reach, and cutting angles.

Boxing guard, footwork, jabs, hooks, and reading shoulders.

Kung-fu flow, redirection, balance, and structure.

General martial arts grappling basics, escapes, and body mechanics.

Each course was short.

Three to five hours at most.

"This isn't about fighting like them," Conrad thought.

"It's about understanding what they can do to me."

A Nen fight wasn't just aura versus aura.

It was also a battle of mental fortitude and intelligence, at least that is what Conrad always believed.
