Chapter 123: Demanding Back Pay, Instant Wealth

Otonashi Chiya was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. He had just finished making breakfast for Denji and Kobeni before coming here, and now he had to prepare enough for Shingetsu and the others. Including himself, that meant making eight portions.

He was exceptionally busy this morning. However, Reze stepped in to help. "Those guys are probably like me—they love all kinds of meat."

"Then the ingredients in my fridge might not actually be enough." Chiya checked the fridge; the meat supply was running low. Considering Reze's appetite alone was massive, adding several more people...

"It's fine. We can just eat a little; it's not like we're afraid of hunger anyway," Reze said casually.

Just then, Shingetsu joined them in the kitchen.

"Oh my~ Does Miss Shingetsu want to help too?" Reze teased upon seeing her.

Shingetsu ignored Reze and spoke directly to Chiya. "I'll help as well. You can leave any task to me."

"Then help me wash the vegetables first, and then slice those ingredients." Subconsciously, Chiya assumed Shingetsu would be decent at cooking, so he didn't give detailed instructions on whether to cube or slice the food.

"Mhm." Since Shingetsu agreed so calmly and decisively, Chiya felt even more comfortable leaving her to it.

The next moment, however, he watched as Shingetsu used her "hand-blade" to hack away at the ingredients. Her hands moved so fast they left afterimages—it looked impressive and cool, but a closer look revealed the food was a chaotic mess, with pieces of wildly varying sizes and shapes.

"Wait a second." Chiya couldn't bear to watch anymore and stopped her. "You... how about you help boil the soup instead? You know how to do that, right?" To be safe this time, he made sure to ask if she was capable.

"No problem," Shingetsu said expressionlessly.

Chiya felt a twinge of worry, but he let her try. However, Reze wasn't much better than Shingetsu. Reze was skilled with a knife, so her sliced ingredients looked much more uniform, but her clumsy pace and technique made it obvious she wasn't a natural in the kitchen either.

"For secret agents, you're both surprisingly bad at cooking," Chiya couldn't help but complain.

"Not every agent needs to be a chef. My specialties are seduction and assassination, after all; I didn't really need to study culinary arts." As she spoke, Reze shot a glance at Shingetsu. "Regardless, my cooking is still a bit better than Miss Shingetsu's, and that's enough for me~"

"..."

Shingetsu was clearly unconvinced by the remark. But in truth, she had never studied cooking at all; her attempt at making soup was purely based on intuition. Chiya took one look at her movements and realized she was clueless.

He sighed softly. "Forget it, I'll do it all. You two just assist me from the sidelines."

Ultimately, Chiya prepared almost the entire breakfast spread himself.

"This is delicious! I had no idea Lord Otonashi was such a great cook!"

"It really is good. Much better than what you get at most restaurants."

"To think Lord Otonashi would personally prepare breakfast for us—what an honor!"

Furia and the others offered their praise one after another, all thoroughly satisfied with the breakfast. In the past, they would occasionally sneak out to diners or restaurants, but those meals were mediocre by comparison.

After all, Otonashi Chiya possessed the Mangekyo Sharingan. His culinary skills were already decent, but with the enhancement of the Mangekyo, his precision and timing were beyond what an ordinary person could achieve. While it might not have been "world-class" gourmet, it was more than enough to capture everyone's appetite.

"Shingetsu, it's time to head out and demand our pay from Minister Levan."

Chiya certainly hadn't forgotten such an important matter. After finishing breakfast, he intended to take Shingetsu back to the Leningrad Military Department to collect their wages. An instant later, Chiya and Shingetsu teleported directly into Minister Levan's office.

Seeing them appear out of thin air, Minister Levan jumped out of his skin. Part of it was the shock of witnessing Chiya's ability for the first time, but the bigger reason was that he had already received word of what happened at the Moscow military base last night.

However, Levan quickly regained his composure. "Have you come to kill me...?"

He had been unable to sleep a wink since hearing the news in the middle of the night. He had technically been a participant in the military's operation against Chiya; although he had been kept in the dark about the true motives and was simply following orders, he had put the pieces together once the base was invaded.

Rumor had it that Chiya had eliminated every high-ranking official involved in that plot without exception. Levan had spent the entire night in an agonizing state of anxiety, certain his time was up. Now that the man was standing right in front of him, he was terrified, yet he felt a strange sense of relief—at least the wait for the executioner was over.

"No. Why would I kill you, Minister Levan? You never intentionally targeted me." Chiya shook his head slightly.

Minister Levan was visibly taken aback. "Then why are you here?"

After such a catastrophic event, he assumed Chiya and Shingetsu would never return to the Soviet Union—especially not to the Leningrad department. If they did show up, he figured it could only be for a reckoning.

In a way, Chiya was there for a reckoning.

"We just came to get paid. Even though we won't be working here anymore, we should at least receive the wages we've earned, shouldn't we?" Chiya said flatly.

"...Oh! Right!"

Levan was stunned. His mind had been so occupied by his fear of death that he had completely forgotten they were owed a salary. If Chiya hadn't mentioned it, he didn't know how long it would have taken him to remember.

"No problem! I'll calculate your pay and issue it immediately!"

Levan scrambled to calculate what was owed to them. Normally, this was the finance department's job, but this situation was extremely delicate. He didn't dare show any negligence; a single slip-up could cost him his head.

Based on the calculation of base salary plus bonuses, prorated for the number of days Chiya had worked (since he hadn't yet completed a full month in Leningrad), Levan quickly finalized the total. He paid them in cash on the spot, using his own funds as an advance to be settled with the accounting department later.

Ultimately, Chiya and Shingetsu each walked away with roughly 100,000 Rubles. Since Chiya had been partnered with Shingetsu since his arrival and they split mission bonuses equally, their pay was nearly identical given their similar base salaries.

At the current exchange rate, 100,000 Rubles was worth approximately 10 to 20 million Yen. Chiya had once again become instantly wealthy.
