Chapter 94: Meeting Reze
The moment Shingetsu heard the phrase "very beautiful girl," a flicker of movement crossed her eyes.
However, she stopped herself there. She didn't snap or change her expression instantly like she usually did. After the incident yesterday, she wanted to restrain herself as much as possible in front of Otonashi Chiya; she didn't want him to catch on to the fact that she was jealous.
At that moment, Chiya's gaze was fixed on Director Lev, and the Director lacked Chiya's heightened sense of perception. Consequently, Shingetsu's subtle shift in expression went unnoticed by anyone.
"Can you tell me the newcomer's name?" Chiya asked, feeling a bit curious.
His intuition told him that this situation wasn't quite as simple as it seemed. Ordinarily, the arrival of a mere rookie wouldn't cause such a stir—calling both him and Shingetsu to the office specifically to arrange for them to mentor her.
The crux of the matter was that he and Shingetsu were undeniably the number one and number two strongest in the Leningrad Military Department. For a rookie who hadn't even shown her face yet to receive such high-level treatment, there was no way she was an ordinary person.
Chiya had two theories: either the newcomer had an extremely special background, or she was an elite similar to an S-rank recruit from Tokyo Public Safety.
Director Lev, however, shook his head. "I'm not clear on the specific name yet, but I've heard she's the daughter of a prominent family."
He was simply following orders from his superiors and didn't have the clearance to know the full details. But based on the attitude of the high command, he could infer that some high-society heiress probably wanted to experience the military life, which essentially made Chiya and Shingetsu her bodyguards. Of course, "bodyguard" was a somewhat unflattering term, so he made sure to keep that thought to himself.
"I see. A daughter of a prominent family..." Chiya nodded slightly.
Since even Director Lev was saying this, he figured his guess was likely correct—it was indeed due to a very special social status. Chiya immediately thought of the word "bodyguard" as well. Aren't Shingetsu and I essentially being assigned to protect this special young lady?
Just then, Director Lev's landline phone rang.
"Excuse me, I need to take this," Director Lev said to them before answering the call.
After a few brief responses, he hung up and informed Chiya and Shingetsu, "Well, the newcomer will be arriving at the department this afternoon."
"Let us know when she gets here," Chiya said.
Shingetsu remained silent the entire time, her face devoid of emotion, but whatever was going on in her mind was another matter entirely.
Chiya didn't dwell much on the rookie, waiting for the afternoon with a calm heart. As long as she wasn't some spoiled, arrogant heiress, mentoring a newcomer wasn't a big deal. If she was a spoiled brat, he'd just wash his hands of the whole thing—it wasn't like anyone could actually force him to do anything.
When the newcomer finally arrived at the headquarters, Director Lev summoned Chiya and Shingetsu once again.
They met the newcomer in the lobby of the office building.
Director Lev was right—she was indeed a very beautiful girl, but she was also someone Otonashi Chiya found incredibly familiar...
Purple hair, emerald-green eyes, and features that were both exquisite and cute, with long bangs swept behind her ears. She was already dressed in the Leningrad Military Department uniform. While her figure wasn't exactly "voluptuous," she was exceptionally well-proportioned and slender—the kind of balanced physique that was actually more pleasing to the eye.
Most notably, the object around her neck resembled a "choker" with a pull-ring attached, making Chiya absolutely certain that the girl before him was Reze!
Reze was a member of the Soviet military's top-secret "Hybrid Project." Having lost her parents at a young age, she was confined in a secret room by the military to undergo the "modification project," which could also be described as human experimentation. The Soviet military used the heart of the Bomb Devil to turn her into the Bomb Hybrid—a "war machine" serving the state.
Of course, the Bomb Devil had actually been consumed by Pochita long ago. Memories of "bombs" had been erased from humanity, including Reze's own memory, so her codename wasn't "Bomb" but simply "Bomb." It seemed that weapon-type devils were special; even if eaten by Pochita, they didn't vanish entirely like other devils. While the name was forgotten, the devil hearts within hybrids like Reze and Quanxi remained.
"Hello!"
At that moment, Reze spotted Chiya and Shingetsu. She waved with a bright smile, appearing incredibly lively and cute.
[Ding! Host has activated the achievement "First Meeting with Reze." Attribute Point gained: 1!]
[Assignable Attribute Points: 101]
Including the 100 points gained from hunting the Typhoon Devil, Chiya now had 101 points. The 100 points for the Typhoon Devil were reasonable, as its difficulty was far higher than the 40-point Camera Devil.
However, a problem immediately weighed on Chiya's mind. Since the newcomer Director Lev mentioned was Reze, there was a major issue. Reze was a Soviet "war machine" and a highly trained operative; she couldn't possibly be a "daughter of a prominent family." Reze had no personal freedom; if she was deployed, it meant the high command had arranged a secret operation.
The question was: what kind of secret operation?
Chiya's thoughts turned solemn. The Soviet high command specifically arranging for Reze to pose as a rookie to get close to him and Shingetsu suggested their target was either him or Shingetsu. He felt it was likely himself, given that Shingetsu was Soviet while he was an outsider. He had no clue what their specific intent was, but it was certain they viewed him as a threat.
For now, he wanted to see exactly what the high command intended for Reze to do to him...
"Eh~~?"
Seeing no response from Chiya or Shingetsu, Reze pouted slightly, her expression a mix of cuteness and disappointment. "Why is everyone so cold?"
Realizing he had been distracted for too long, Chiya snapped back to reality and smiled at Reze. "My name is Otonashi Chiya. I'm a member of Special Operations Unit 1."
Shingetsu, on the other hand, simply had no desire to speak to this girl.
"I think I've been assigned to Unit 1 as well, so we'll be teammates from now on~" Reze said. Then, she immediately corrected herself: "Oh, right, right! Not just teammates—I'll be relying on your guidance from now on!"
"Let me think..."
Reze placed a hand on her perfectly curved chin, lost in serious thought. Suddenly, she clapped her palm as if struck by a brilliant idea.
"I'll call you Master Otonashi from now on!"
