Chapter 85: Going Home to Visit
"Angry? I am not."
Shingetsu denied it immediately. While he had indeed been quite furious earlier, anger wasn't the reason he was currently ignoring Otonashi Chiya. However, since the stifling sensation in his chest had completely vanished by now, he was willing to talk again.
"Not angry? I thought you were actually that petty," Chiya remarked.
Shingetsu had no intention of explaining the real reason. Just then, there was a knock on the lounge door.
"Come in."
Chiya hadn't locked the door, so there was no need to get up. He figured a stranger wouldn't knock without cause—it was likely a staff member. As it turned out, it wasn't a recreational center employee but one of Director Lev's subordinates, delivering four sets of military uniforms. Because Military Devil Hunters often damaged their uniforms during combat, they were always provided with extra sets from the start.
The man explained, "Since you weren't in your dormitory, I was instructed to deliver these to you personally, so I tracked you down here."
"Alright, thanks for the trouble." Chiya accepted the four sets of uniforms.
"Please try one on now. If it doesn't fit, I need to send it back for adjustments immediately. For the sake of the protocol, I ask for your cooperation," Lev's subordinate requested. He was just a low-level staffer; if any part of the process went wrong, he would be the one to suffer. He had to confirm the fit before he could leave.
"Try it on right here?" Chiya double-checked.
"Yes," the man nodded. Aside from him and Chiya, only the "Tsar" was present. It wasn't like Chiya had to strip completely naked, and since they were all men, it shouldn't matter, right? Besides, he would wait just outside the door.
"As long as he doesn't mind," Chiya said, pointing to Shingetsu. Chiya certainly didn't care about such things, but with a guy as eccentric as Shingetsu, who knew?
Shingetsu said nothing, calmly taking a sip of his drink with an indifferent expression. Chiya took this as a sign of non-objection and said to the subordinate, "Looks like it's fine. Wait a moment."
"Understood." The man stepped out of the lounge to wait in the hallway.
Chiya began changing right there in the room. Although he could have changed inside the Kamui dimension, he didn't want to casually reveal that ability in front of others.
However, Chiya had absolutely no idea that Shingetsu was actually a woman. This meant he was currently changing right in front of a woman, completely oblivious to the fact. Forget Chiya, who had just arrived—even in the rest of the Leningrad Military Department, no one knew that the "strongest man" in their eyes was actually female.
At that moment, Shingetsu's eyes were visibly darting around, specifically avoiding Chiya's direction. With his Mangekyo Sharingan, Chiya immediately noticed Shingetsu's odd behavior. He felt a wave of confusion. What is this guy doing? Didn't he say he didn't mind? Why does he look... embarrassed?
Chiya moved efficiently, quickly donning the military uniform, and then called out to the man outside. "Alright, you can come in now."
"How does it feel? Does it fit?" the man asked immediately after walking back in.
"It's good. Fits perfectly," Chiya replied, adjusting his military cap as he spoke.
Compared to the Tokyo Public Safety uniform he had been wearing for so long, this new military attire felt fresh. It was comfortable and, in his opinion, looked quite sharp.
"Good to hear. I'll go submit my report then," the man nodded and left the lounge.
Once the subordinate was gone, Chiya turned to Shingetsu with a look of doubt. "You looked a bit uneasy just now. You did mind me changing in front of you, didn't you?"
"I did not. It was merely your imagination." Shingetsu's face had already returned to its usual cold, calm state. He certainly wasn't going to admit to being flustered by such a small thing; where would his dignity as a "strong person" go if he did?
"Is that so...?" Chiya didn't dwell on it. Even with his suspicions, he didn't leap to the conclusion that Shingetsu was a woman. He had already classified Shingetsu as a man in his mind, and frankly, he didn't care either way; he viewed Shingetsu simply as a comrade-in-arms.
As evening approached, it was time to head back for dinner. Chiya and Shingetsu parted ways outside the recreation center; to an outsider, it would have looked like they didn't know each other at all.
Over the next few days, Chiya did little else besides exploring the areas outside the military department with Ian. In a vast, sparsely populated place like the Soviet Union, devils appeared frequently, but they were spread out over massive distances. Unless there was a specific high-priority mission, Military Devil Hunters rarely stumbled upon devils randomly—they were usually so far away that private-sector hunters would get to them first.
Leningrad was enormous. In those few days, Chiya only managed to get familiar with the single administrative district where the military headquarters was located; touring the entire city was impossible in such a short time.
Time passed quickly, and Friday soon arrived. Chiya decided it was time to head home.
"Ian, I'll be staying in my dorm for most of tomorrow, so I won't be going out," Chiya informed him.
"Understood," Ian replied without prying. It was perfectly normal to want to spend a day resting in the dorms.
After closing and locking his door and pulling the curtains tight, Chiya prepared to head back. There were no cameras in the room—with his Mangekyo Sharingan, he would have spotted even a pinhole lens immediately. The military wasn't so careless as to ignore a Devil Hunter's privacy.
He transferred the items he had bought previously, along with the local delicacies he'd picked up over the last few days, directly into his Kamui dimension. Carrying things this way was incredibly convenient, provided one didn't mind the stamina drain of using the dual Kamui... and with his high Vitality stat, that drain was no longer a significant burden.
In the next instant, Chiya transported himself from the Kamui dimension to the "coordinate" he had left at home.
Tokyo, Japan.
Denji was watching TV in the living room when a swirling spatial vortex suddenly appeared. Having seen her brother's ability more than once, she only froze for a split second before realizing Chiya was back.
Under her excited and delighted gaze, Otonashi Chiya stepped out of the vortex.
"Big Brother Chiya! You're finally back!" Denji bounded off the sofa and threw herself into Chiya's arms for a hug.
