Vivien's face lights up as she leans across the counter. "Oh my goodness, she's absolutely precious! Hello there, little angel."
Renata sits secured in her carrier atop the bookstore counter. Vivien, Ophelia, and Starla have all gathered here this evening to update the window display after closing time. James and I just entered, immediately surrounded by enthusiastic admirers the moment we crossed the threshold.
A regular customer whose name escapes me approaches us. "I had no idea you were expecting," she says, though I notice her gaze keeps shifting between James and our daughter with obvious curiosity. The non-magical residents whisper about our town being cursed or haunted. Our unusually high rate of deaths attributed to wild animal attacks certainly fuels those rumors. With so few vampires in Vivian Hill, James has definitely caught people's attention.
