I tightened my grip on Mateo's small hand, forcing myself to maintain a calm smile. Around us, the whispered conversations created a symphony of cruelty that followed wherever I went.
"Look at that shameless woman. First Jonathan, now his brother Dennis."
"Thank God the old man died before she could sink her claws into the father too."
"What's the deal with that kid? Did she actually adopt him?"
"Makes sense, considering she's barren."
"The audacity of showing her face here."
