Chapter 118 One Million a Day!?
"I want a new Arc Reactor."
Finney didn't beat around the bush and went straight to the point. He thought about it carefully; even if Tony refused, it wouldn't be a big deal, he had several other options.
However, Tony was only slightly taken aback when he heard this, and then asked curiously, "What do you want it for?"
"I have a pet, and it needs energy-type food."
Finney didn't hide anything from Tony. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon would have to be brought out into the open sooner or later, and he couldn't keep it hidden forever. After all, he was hoping to gain experience and power if the opportunity arose.
"A pet!? Using a reactor as food!?"
Tony was stunned. If he didn't know that Finney was different from ordinary people in many ways, he would have thought that Finney was joking with him. But even so, he still confirmed again, "Are you sure you're going to use it to feed your pet?"
"What do you have?"
"Nothing, just a little guy."
Finney didn't want to reveal too much detail, after all, it's always good to have more trump cards.
Seeing this, Tony didn't press further. He took a box from a drawer, opened it, and pulled out a small, glowing arc reactor. He said seriously,
"I don't know what you're going to feed it to, but be very careful."
Seeing how easily Tony handed him the arc reactor, Finney was surprised and couldn't help but ask, "Aren't you worried I'm lying to you?"
"If you just wanted it, there'd be no need for this excuse,"
Tony patted Finney's shoulder with a smirk. "Relax, kid. If you wanted to rob me, you wouldn't need such a lame excuse. I trust you.
Finney was somewhat surprised; he hadn't expected Tony to trust him so much without him realizing it. He said, "Thanks, I'll bring you something good next time."
After leaving with the miniature Arc Reactor, Finney went directly to the snowy mountain and summoned the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
Then, with expectant eyes, he fed the miniature Arc Reactor to the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
But to Finney's surprise, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon spat it out less than three seconds after swallowing the miniature Arc Reactor.
"It really can't even digest the reactor!?"
Finney frowned. If that was the case, the chances of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon absorbing the Space Stone were even smaller. But Finney didn't give up. He would try and see how it went, and even if it couldn't absorb it now, there was still the future.
Besides, the miniature Arc Reactor was Tony's creation; its energy storage was very precise, unlike the Tesseract which could overflow.
So, not being able to absorb the miniature Arc Reactor didn't necessarily mean it couldn't absorb the Space Stone's energy.
In any case, Finney was still somewhat disappointed. He had thought the miniature Arc Reactor would at least accelerate the Blue-Eyes White Dragon's evolution, but he hadn't expected it to be unable to absorb it at this stage.
However, considering that the Blue-Eyes White Dragon was only a single-star creature, its weak digestive ability was understandable.
Finney helplessly comforted the Blue-Eyes White Dragon with a Spicy Chicken Wrap, hoping that its condition would improve after evolution. But if that didn't work, he still had a final resort.
Just three days later, Finney received a call from Nick Fury.
"Is there any way to stop them from taking the Tesseract?"
Nick Fury didn't ask for a favor. He was fishing for information, his voice as guarded as ever., but instead inquired about other solutions, as he still harbored some doubts about Finney's words.
"Just don't give it to them!"
Finney replied irritably. "The thing is in your hands now. If you don't want them to take it, just say so. As long as you have the ability to keep it, they can't take it even if they want to."
Nick Fury naturally understood the logic, but he still hoped for a more peaceful solution, so he asked, "Can't we negotiate or exchange it?"
"Don't ask me!"
Finney replied with a helpless tone, "I don't know anyone in Asgard, how would I know what they're thinking?"
Nick Fury didn't know if Finney was telling the truth, but he also knew that whether or not the Tesseract could be protected ultimately depended on strength.
"I need your help!"
In the end, Nick Fury still said this, although he suspected that Finney's purpose in telling him this was to use up his chances of getting help, but he had to take this 'Transparent Trap'.
Hearing this, Finney on the other end of the phone showed a satisfied smile, but replied, "I can't guarantee that I can stop it successfully, you should be prepared."
"Okay!"
Nick Fury responded, not caring. If even Finney and S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn't stop it, then he could only temporarily admit defeat.
"So when do you plan to send the Tesseract over?"
Finney asked tentatively. In fact, if Nick Fury was really willing to hand over the Tesseract to him, it might not be a bad thing. At least in his hands, the chances of Loki taking the Tesseract would be almost impossible.
"I can't give you the Tesseract directly. I need you to come to the base and guard it."
Nick Fury certainly wouldn't give the Tesseract to Finney. His purpose in keeping the Tesseract was to study its power. Giving it to Finney would be no different from returning it to Asgard.
Upon hearing this, Finney couldn't help but purse his lips. He didn't press Nick Fury too much, but instead said, "Then it'll cost more!"
"More?"
Nick Fury was taken aback, then asked with an air of wealth, "How much?"
"One million a day!?"
Finney thought for a moment and tentatively quoted a number.
"Deal!"
But Nick Fury's unwavering answer made his heart ache instantly. The price was clearly too low; it should at least be quoted by the hour.
Unfortunately, Finney was too embarrassed to back out, so he could only ask with a stern face, "When do we start?"
"The sooner the better!"
Nick Fury replied.
"Then let's do it tomorrow. I'll ask for a week's leave from school,"
Finney said after a moment's thought. If he was going to put on an act, he wanted to go all the way. If he just went to school leisurely every day, Nick Fury would probably become suspicious.
As for whether Asgard would actually send anyone after a week, Finney didn't care. He had never promised that Asgard would send anyone; it had all been Nick Fury's speculation.
Besides, Finney figured Nick Fury probably didn't want Asgard to actually come to retrieve it.
After ending the call, Finney had essentially completed the initial steps of his plan to contact the Tesseract. As for how to find an opportunity for the Blue-Eyes White Dragon to swallow the gem, he planned to wait until he arrived at the base the next day to see how things went.
A week should be enough time for him to find an opportunity for the Blue-Eyes White Dragon to come into contact with the Tesseract.
The next day, Finney went to school to ask for leave and briefly explained the situation to Skye, but he didn't go into detail about S.H.I.E.L.D., just in case. He also told Mordo about Kamar-Taj, saying he might not be coming for a while.
Finney went to great lengths to gain Nick Fury's trust as much as possible.
